Because some people think 0.55% is worth mentioning at every possible moment to blow the issue out of proportion and lower iPhone 4 sales.
I don't think it's been blow out of proportion at all. In fact, I think there's a reason why so many people are talking about it. And the 0.55% number is a misconception because it refers to only the people that complained who had AppleCare, which many people do not have.
Do you really think Apple would give out free cases to every iPhone owner just because 0.55% of people with iPhone 4's are having problems? That doesn't make much sense to me - that's why people are having feelings that Apple goofed up with the antenna. I think if it wasn't a huge issue, then Apple would have just given out free cases to people that came into the store and complained if it really was only 0.55% of iPhone 4 users.
From the little experience I have dealing with paints and stains, I'm almost sure the problem is white pigment is not as opaque as black so at the lower end of the black iPhone's normal mfg. variance for paint thickness, the white iPhones are coming out translucent. Apple probably tried adjusting the paint thickness up for the white iPhone but then at the upper end of the new normal variance, the paint is now coming out too thick for the digitizer overlay. So they're either looking for white pigment that is more opaque, or painting machines that exhibit less thickness variance. In all likelihood, neither one exists at the moment.
Heh, so much effort poured into describing a scenario that can never be verified.
I'm wondering why that wouldn't have been discovered when producing a white prototype? I find it hard to believe that they decided to make a white one before actually seeing if one could be produced to their liking. But I really don't know about manufacturing. Maybe something totally unexpected came about when it was being produced in mass?
Why not just get the black iPhone as the iPod touch will probably be black as well. Not to mention that no one knows yet if the touch will even have a rear facing camera yet alone a front facing camera. The iPhone should also be cheaper than the touch with the subsidies and you won't have to carry 2 devices. Another thing to note is that the touch will only have WiFi connectivity and no 3G so you will only get data when you have WiFi.

I'm a bit mystified at this as well, as Apple had white iPhones at the intro, on the tables for the media to play with. Must be a mass production hold-up.
Wild theory #2: Apple has all black iPhone production lines up, and switching some of those to white producers would slow down things too much. Not very plausible, but that's why Apple only pays me in happiness.

It's called media hype which can reap havoc without any real substantiation. BP and all other current major news events had already been beat to death so they jumped on the iPhone. Remember the return rate was lower than that of the 3GS explain that...
And another apologist rears his ugly head. I love you Apple fanbois. The antenna issue was so bad it was world headlines for weeks, surpassing the BP oil spill. A US senator got involved, satire cartoons filled the newspapers, and the world trembled on the brink. Everyone seemed to be in agreement that a mass recall was the only way to save Apple.
So what happened? Darth Jobs got up on stage and told you the phone was fine and the entire freaking planet just forgot the whole thing.
And now by your post, and the one I responded to, I take it no one is allowed to even mention the antenna issue. "Just get a case" or "I don't make phone calls cause I have no friends" is the answer to everything.
Gawd, I can't stand you freaking fanbois. I wish you were in the room with me so I could smack some sense into you. This company is so off the deep end, they can't even make a white phone without getting into trouble. ANY other company screws up like this would have shareholders demanding resignations. But not Apple. They are not a company, they are your best friends, right geeks?
Go have another glass of Apple Juice and squeeze your black iPhone 4.
Right, cause the news never sensationalizes anything? Everything CNN tells you is correct and steve jobs doesn't know anything?
If you hate fanbois so much, maybe you shouldn't hang out on an apple news blog? Seems pretty stupid to me. Fanbois may be annoying, but they are best avoided by not hanging out on their favorite blog sites, just a hint.

Deep inside yourself You are still the 14 year old kid nobody liked in school. Everybody called you a nerd, the girls didn't like you and the jocks picked on you. You come here to flame and for a moment it makes you feel like a real man. You will never be a real man, just a pathetic little boy
You are, what's the expression? Spot on!
I was a nerd, geek, LOOSER!! But now I have a Mac and an iPhone 4 and I have RESPECT! And thinks to my stock speculation, with occasional inside info from AI, I have WEALTH!! I have teenage broads dropping to their knees as I strut Travolta style through the malls grasping my naked iPhone 4! I have jocks begging me to explain how to get Windows formatted porn movies into their shiny new iPods.
At last it is COOL and HIP and RAD to be bald with glasses! What an age we live in.
That's why I prefer discussing the Mac. I find those threads informative, like the one where the iMac has a better than hi def display but can't play content above 720P. Didn't know about that.
Technically it's for media coming over the input onto the iMac. If you have the media on the iMac itself there isn't an issue with playing beyond 720p, IIRC.

It is my perception that the world cared more about the iPhone antenna issue than the BP oil spill and that cartoon really was, as you like to say here, "spot on."
I think it's more a matter of news fatigue. The spill happened in late April and took until last week to get capped. That's 3 months plus of hearing about it constantly. The media was desparate for something new to talk about and jumped on the iPhone issue.

99.45% haven't taken the issue to AppleCare. We don't know what the figures are on returned iPhones and how many of those returns were stated to be for reasons related to the antenna. I bet it's still well under 5%, maybe not even 2%. Gaming consoles typically have about a 5% failure rate (unless they're an XBOX 360), don't know what the typical failure rates for smartphones are.
And now the Apple apologists come out of the woodwork. Time to put down the Kool Aid and face facts.
The external antenna with the gap right near the users palm is a failure. It is probably the greatest example of form over function in history. The Apple engineers begged Steve Mobs not to embrace it and Mr. Egomaniac did it anyway. And now Apple has to pony up and buy the whole world free cases. What does that tell you?
I like how you only signed up to troll.
Anyway I"m pissed that theres no white iphone now and no idea when there will be one. I was waiting to buy 2 of them. gar!

They make totally functionless mock ups and apparently they looked very sweet, it was a thumbs up. The making it real part is where it became problematic.
I work around that area in Cupertino, and I've seen quite a few people walking around and in restaurants with white iPhone 4's. So they are out there; if not exclusively for those privileged enough to have one for testing purposes. My guess would be, Apple will delay the white iPhone post September 30th, so they don't have to issue free cases for new customers. Sure, smart from a business perspective, but very poor move is you ask me.
I hope the "white pigment or substance" used is fused with the glass during the manufacture to create a "white glass" and not just a superficial thin layer of white paint.
I state "white pigment or substance" because the coloration in "colored glasses" need not come from the standard paint that we are familiar with.
If the process uses paint, the difference in thermal properties of glass and paint (cellphones do get hot) may lead to cracking or peeling of the layer of the paint. This possibility can be a greater public relations disaster than the "antennagate" -- you cannot cover cracking or peeling of the paint layer with a case.
There are of course other substances, just like those use to tint glass in cars that bond very stably with glass.
Disclaimer: I am no expert though, so the above speculation on the properties or behavior of a thin layer of paint on glass might have a technological solution already that I am not aware of.
The update is particularly interesting because it was just a week ago that Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs publicly said that the white iPhone 4 remained on track to launch by the end of July.
You mean the information given at the event wasn't completely honest and transparent? That it would be foolish for people to simply accept what was said as gospel truth? Shocking.
And now the Apple apologists come out of the woodwork. Time to put down the Kool Aid and face facts.

Wow... guess I have to Google this to see the thousands who have died because of this.
The end of the universe is truly nigh.
FYI, the vast majority of iPhone 4 users think the new antenna design is actually superior and a design success.

They're probably awaiting a reengineered antenna system... Who Knows?
(thumbs up)

iPhone 4, 32GB = $299 upfront + $360 ($15/mo x 24mo) = $659
iPod Touch 4, 32GB = $299 upfront
Difference = $360
2 devices isn't hard for me, and 98% of the time I have WiFi at home, work, and school.
Shoot. I just talked myself out of an iPhone.
