Hey Cheap-shot artist, diving hack-boys from meh-HE-co:
Na na na naaah, na na NAH nahhh, HEY HEY hey - you suck!
I've never seen so many pathetic dives and cheap shots in my life. Mexico deserved to lose. Worse still I didn't see ONE of those SOB's shaking hands after the game. First team I've ever seen walk off the field without shaking hands / changing jersies...[turd-balls that they are].
That was a bad no-call. But you know what - the guy obviously didn't see it. Hell, two of the first three yellow cards he gave us during the start of the 2nd period were total crap calls. Delay of game?? Please...you want to call delay of game call it on that long-haired pansy who tumbled to the ground anytime someone got within 2 feet of him. What an ass.
And Blanco - major dickhead. The guy clenched his fist a couple times when he fell down with another player like someone axed his mother.
Well done USA, two great goals. Please whoop the Germans as well, we managed 5-1, I,d settle for 1-0. Coby Jones is a tough man, thay battered and fouled him 5 times in 10 minutes. Go USA. Mommy sends hugs
I saw some Mexican player in an interview yesterday saying that for "political reasons" Mexico would have to win the match, it being very important to them. Idiot. Mexico deserved to lose for that comment alone.
Yeah, and we managed 1-0 the year before ... in Wembley
I'm looking forward to the match against USA. They can be proud of reaching the quarter finals. But that should be enough.

? 1-0
? 1-5 which looks better?
Some Germans, egged on by some of their newspapers, do indeed seem to believe that the cup is theirs already, and for that alone they deserve to be taught a lesson.
It's not over until the fat lady sings.
GO U.S. Heck, the States is not even a footballing nation. Well done.
Some Germans, egged on by some of their newspapers, do indeed seem to believe that the cup is theirs already, and for that alone they deserve to be taught a lesson.

Honestly: I love the matches between England and Germany, because I have much respect for the English team. These games are always full of tension, unpredictable, and the English play fair.
Yeah, some newspapers keep overestimating the German team. I think they have a good chance against USA, but the semi final would mean Spain or Italy (I don't count on South Corea). And, well ...
But we were taught our lesson in the last two world cups. '94 quarter final against Bulgaria, '98 against Croatia. Euro cup 2000 - not even made the first round.
Currently it's the best German team since 1990. Winning the Euro '96 was only an "accident".
It's strange - if we were thrown out of the cup in the first round or in the game against Paraguay, everyone would have said: That's what I expected. Now it's the quarter final and some people are convinced we'll make to the final. At least.
But, hey, wouldn't it be great to have a final England - Germany? Still possible ...
The scary thing is that most Americans could care less about the World Cup other than the fact that we think its hilarious that we're still in it while countries that love the game so much are not. The fact that the US is still in it while most 'favorites' are out delights a lot of people around here.
I could still really care less about soccer myself (meaning I won't get up at 2:20 AM to watch it although I was up early enough to catch the end), but the fact that they are winning sure is cool.
The scary thing is that most Americans could care less...

I take it you mean, "couldn't care less"?
At the end of the day, it's only a game, played by 11 players that I do not know personally, and whose outcome will not affect my life one way or the other.
Fran's right though - American's prefer basketball, American football, and baseball over soccer (which the rest of the world confusingly refers to as football). I for one had no clue that the World Cup was even happening until the BBC website was so jammed that I couldn't get on it (too many people checking the scores).
But soccer is up and coming. Based on our population size and wealth, I can only assume that it's a matter of time until we become a top tier team if we put our minds to it.
p.s., Pscates, all those hordes of Mexicans overrunning San Diego are simply adding to the pool of human capital that MLS and the U.S. team can draw upon. Although I think that you need to be a U.S. citizen first...
Soccer will never be big as a pro sport in the U.S. It's had a lot of support for years at the high school and college level but that's as far as it's gone. And that's as far as it will ever go. I'm rooting for our World Cup team. They've shown me a lot of heart. In any other nation they'd be household names. I'm not in any way denigrating them or their efforts or the sport. It's just that soccer will never be half as big in this country as even hockey is. Sorry guys.
Hey TI you seems to be very active on the threads dealing with football

Brazil are *not* the Brazil of old, and they certainly are not unbeatable, or put another way, I cannot see them beat England
Exactly. I think soccer in America is, like it or not, about as big and popular as it's going to be. That's just true.
We have other sports we like better. That simple. Romania and Spain and wherever the hell else probably don't have hockey, baseball, football, all the ESPN2 "extreme" stuff, plus all the cable and satellite stuff to watch these other things on.
I played soccer back in the late 70's/early 80's (from the time I was about 8-13 years old, give or take. I had a blast, and this was during that initial "soccer explosion" in the late 70's.
My family would drive down to Atlanta from Chattanooga on Saturday nights to watch the Atlanta Chiefs play at the Brave's Fulton County Stadium. I had a Pele lunchbox and a huge Pele poster in my bedroom.
But somehow it all faded for me. I got into music/guitar and stuff at about 12 years old, and soccer just didn't seem as fun or cool.
It's got a small, devoted following here in the states (my old man, for instance, who gets absolutely bonkers every World Cup, taping and re-watching games, analyzing and criticizing the games, players, refs, etc.).
But the 'rat is right: soccer has been "growing in popularity" for about a gazillion years...and it's NEVER quite as big as the devotees would make it out to be.
Most people simply don't give two damns about it. I know that, personally, I hate the dramatics and hysteria of it. I hate seeing these guys take a tumble on field and REALLY play it up, clutching their leg, practicing the best facial contortions, writhing around, etc. Then suddenly, as if nothing happened (because it DIDN'T!), they hop up and sprint away. I think they were just trying to rest for a few seconds.
Besides, it's the sport where, over the years, I've seen the absolute WORST sportsmanship. I just have this mental image of fuzzy/bushy-haired, quasi-rock star sissy Euro twits running around, over-emoting, faking injuries, getting a little TOO happy should someone manage to score a goal in 50 minutes, etc.
Just seems like a really snotty, uppity, unlikeable bunch of people, IMO. And a boring, "let's kick the ball around forever and have nothing exciting happen for half an hour..." kinda sport to me.
Again, I played (and lived and breathed) this crap for six years, therefore I CAN comment on it this way. I distinctly remember a couple of times, while actually playing the game, "this is kinda stupid...".
The final couple of years, I stayed in mostly for my dad and coach than out of any true enjoyment or passion for it. I'd rather had been learning more songs on my guitar.

It's still early here, I've been at work for hours now, and it's Monday. Can't you cut me a break?

Soccer will never be big as a pro sport in the U.S.

Agreed. It's too fluid.
2 times 45 mins of uniterrupted action. What are the poor T.V. advertisers to do?
