I like watching sports, occasionally. Baseball, a little basketball, and tennis. (can you say "Anna Kournikova? ) I used to think watching sports was about analyzing what the pros do so you can emulate it. Now I see it's just a great excuse to socialize.

I like playing sports better. I like playing soccer waaay more than watching it. FIFA rules! I play tennis. This game is the simplest you can get, you hit a ball back and forth and whoever screws up first loses the point. But again, can you say Anna Kournikova? Seriously, I watch tennis to get better at it. But also for fun!

I've had nothing but good experiences with sports, except for the parents of the other team sometimes!

(In cross country running, parents would say "Get that Hartford kid, Johny! He's yours! Blah blah blah!" Very annoying and distracting!)

Where's Ninja for the Go USA, Go!!

You have used a smiley here - many others don't. I hate war metaphors about soccer. Especially the English press is great in talking about "German tanks" or "Blitzkrieg" after a game. Imagine USA lose against Germany, and someone writes something like "another September 11th" or "Pearl Harbor revisited" etc. It's just displaced.

    Three days! Go USA!

I don't believe Poor Taylor is making a WWII reference. More likely he's refering to the U.S. Soccer Teams overall record against Germany (2-4-0). Unfortunately the last time we faced Germany, in March 2002 at Rostock, the U.S. lost.

    Prior to Rostock:

"The U.S. MNT will be looking to extend an unprecedented streak against one of the top teams in the world. The U.S. has shutout Germany in their last two encounters, winning 3-0 on Feb. 6, 1999, in Jacksonville, Fla., and 2-0 on July 30, 1999, at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico."

Sorry Taylor, I think I got that wrong. But there were too many "German tanks" in the press after the 8:0 against Saudi Arabia.

Oh yeah, now I remember these matches. It was terrible ... our team, I mean. In fact I had completely forgotten that these matches were against the US. Now I'm a bit frightened.

Just saw South Corea making the 1:1 against Italy ... wow.

Couldn't help noticing that none of the winning goal scorer's buddies jumped on him, and that the coach sat alone on his bench whilst everyone else was running around on the pitch. Strange.

I guess the Italians can always blame the referee

haha, yeah, that's what i was referring to. The "war" connotation didn't even cross my mind until I saw your post, and then re-read mine. I don't mix my politics with my sport. Bad aftertaste.

    Hi y'all...

Anyway, Mexicans are amateurs at creating a "sporting" ruckus. I was in Denver when the Colorado Avalanche got their Stanley Cup!!! Talk about stupid and insane behavior...amazing. To top it off, it was a white folk event. Wow.

Lastly, I address this to pscates... [quote]every goddamn Hispanic person in the county has apparently nothing better to do than ride up and down the street beside my apartment and lay on the horns of their Impalas and Chevettes

. Hate to rain on your parade buddy, but I had two San Diego "Hispanics" visiting me that day. Sorry that I denied them the opportunity to drive by your apartment. They came up north to break in their new Lexus SC. Nice machine. I guess that makes them "traitors" to their fellow Latino/Hispanic/Mexicans seeing as they don't drive an Impala(HONK, HONK...) or Chevette...

Oh, one last thing pscates, you sure do COMPLAIN a lot son. Take a chill pill or something...

Well, I wasn't making it a "Hispanics drive crappy cars..." thing. Sorry you saw it that way. Just so happens, that the neighbor/area I'm around is pretty middle-class and blue collar. Probably not a Lexus in sight for several miles, white, black, Hispanic or otherwise.

So MY observations, made from MY window and porch, when I wrote MY mini-rant were indeed based on seeing A LOT of Chevettes, Impalas, Geo Metros, Cutlass Supremes, older Hondas and Celicas, etc. And quite a few vans, both of the mini AND 70's bubble mirror/airbrush graphics variety.

Is there anything wrong with that? I don't think so. Did I EVER say there was? No.

NEVER did I state (or imply) that "hey, if you're Hispanic, you HAVE to be driving a busted-up, older car, right?"

That's you, no doubt wishing I said that. When does an honest observation become a racial/cultural slur or putdown?

    Whatever.

As for the "complaining" thing, it was a work night, I'd been listening to it ALL DAY LONG. I live next to a main, busy road (not tucked away in some swanky cul de sac), so by the time I wrote the original post above, I was going on about hour number 5 or 6 of NONSTOP honking, screaming, screeching tires, blasting radios, revving engines, people tossing trash, firecrackers, cans and bottles, etc. all within about 20 feet of my apartment.

    You'd complain too, pal.

No. Though I have been known to add a little hyperbole now and then for no reason at all. It's a Jobsian trait derived from my mentor, Apple Corporate Whore.

As for you miss Shanny, oh, never mind...

I was(unfortunately) in London during the world cup a few years back and without a doubt, I witnessed the most despicable mob/crowd behavior imaginable.

Hey, while we're making generalizations, it's as the saying goes, "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups."

when I was little I did not like soccer at all...Oh how I wished I wasn't so blind back then and could have played in the junior leagues and what not....now I LOVE soccer...its great.

USA won! thats so cool....I doubt they'll get passed germany(especially aftering hearing what brian mcbride had to say about the german team and the next game

but it would still be cool if they did win....the problem as I see it is that US has a very heavy defense(great keeper, good defense players, usually play with 5-6 guys in back)and germany is a passing team(the rely heavily on passing the ball alot and keeping possesion)

good passing teams are usualyl pretty good at slowly picking through defensive lines, and if germany plays an offensive game...then US may be screwed.

however US does have mcbride, wolff, donavan and Mathis...these guys are good...wolff really shone in the mexico game(imo)

oh well...I will be up watching that game for sure(GOD DAMN ESPN SOCCER BROADCASTS AT 4:25 PST!!! so lame!)
