Then again does anyone remember when Jobs introduced craptastic iMacs when everyone expected LCDs or nuthing...A deadly silence... I thought someone would start to boo and get a digital camera throwen at them...

not to mention jobs seemed pretty pissed about the lackluster event too

I could imagine Jobs throwing a digital camera at someone in the crowd booing. That'd be really funny.

That woulda been great. I wish people had booed Steve right off the stage with those ridiculous iMacs. If they had nothing, it would have been better to bump what they could, offer some kinda great promos -- free printers, RAM, scanners, digital camera discounts, whatever -- than to basically tell th audience, "Hey look, I know we haven't done anything to really boost performance, but hey we threw away a nice chunk of our research budget to bring you patterned plastic! Wintel might have dirt cheap Ghz PC's *with nice large displays* but we have flowerpower, and photoshop is optimized for that too! You know we could have spent the money sourcing short neck 17" CRTs and figuring out how to bring them to the iMac, but we thought that what mac users really want is blue dalmation. Aren't you glad you use a mac now?"

Someone shoulda bound Steve up with firewire cords, stuffed a promouse in his mouth, and gone "medieval on his ass" after that expo.

All of this G5 nonsense is way out of control!

All I'd like is for Apple, Motorola, or somebody to go on record giving us some solid info. Confirm, deny, whatever?I just hope that Steve doesn't dig himself into a hole like he did last July.

1.33 GHz Apollo Power Macs with 266 MHz DDR SDRAM and Gigawire would be great, but they'd still leave us behind the PC camp. We need that G5!

[quote] The G4 has a great deal of remaining potential. There's a great deal of headroom left in the chip, which still has enormous usability

LOL, Moto already said it would top out at 1 GHz. To translate that from Motorola BS to normal english, it means the G4 will top out at 933 mHz. In other words, they can give the Powermacs a 66 MHz speedbump. Wow, that's enourmous headroom!

[quote]Junkyar Dawg: Do you just sit around all day typing 'G5' into google, and posting what comes up? This is the second or third thread of yours thats been rather misleading ... 'Aqua acceleration' indeed .

As for some of the digs here....I post about the G5 because it's fun to speculate and ponder over rumors. I could just make up BS, but I figure people would rather see info from other news sites. And if you had bothered to read the link I posted in the Aqua thread, Architosh actually speculated that Aqua was being accelerated. That sounds like an interesting rumor to me, and it turns out that some very interesting discussion took place in that thread among people with enough technical expertise to understand the pros and cons of hardware aqua acceleration.

last I checked AI was still a rumor site.

And no, I don't like CNN, I think their standards are pathetic, but all I said was that CNN has higher standards than MOSR. Make what you will out of that.

And yeah, if Apple doesn't deny these rumors soon, then it suggests that they may be true. But what if Apple is going to release an Apollo G4, running at 1.1 GHZ or so, but call it a G5? Then they can't easily deny the G5 rumors, since there will be a G5, but the rumors are still totally wrong once semantics are disregarded. it could be that Apple is in a catch-22 here.

Nevertheless, I think it would be stupid for Apple to call an Apollo G4 a G5. Sure the Gx designation is somewhat arbitrary, but the Apollo is merely evolution of the G4, it's not a "generational" change from the G4. But I guess marketing can do whatever they please...

Yeah, the last few days all the G5 threads here and rumors are just going a little overboard. I'm getting really sick of reading about the G5.

Hehe, people will have it up to their necks with the G5 and when Jobs introduces it, everyone's gonna moan and piss.

I agree with Junkyard dawg. I really would dislike it if apple put the name g5 on an evolution of a g4. Marketing or whatnot it would just kinda piss me off. I realize apple didn't ask me and apple won't care if one kid is pissed off but I just don't get the sense because the people who really care will know it isn't really the g5. And then what happens when they realese the actuall next generation. Whatever happens I hope apple doesn't dissappoint too badly. MWNY was pretty bad and a repeat would really get me and I think a lot of people down. I am hoping for a totally revamped g5 but an apollo g4 wouldn't be aweful if the g5 wasn't too far behind. But I don hope if it is apollo they keep the name g4

Ya know, I wouldnt be surprised if someone at Apple has a full time job of monitoring places like this combing for rumors etc, then attempting to pitch them to project teams. I could just see it now....

Pitchguy: But Junkyard Dawg said it would be released, so just change the name and add gigawire, I dont care if it hasnt been invented yet, just do it!

    Oh well.

These boards are hilarious. Good source of enjoyment and the occasional bit of information.

Well buddy, I have to disagree with you there. If Apple (in some sort of drugged frenzy) presents the Apollo, then I would WANT them to tell me that. Sure, I would be pissed, but not nearly as pissed as I would be if I found out they lied to me.

However, I just can't shake this feeling that the G5 is coming out, and it is going to do some serious damage to the Mhz gap.

LOL. I bet some of the marketing guys who figure out the specs and prices for the mac lineup come here for pointers and inspiration on how to do their job. i can just see it now:

"Steve, we've got an idea....move the entire desktop range to G4s and G5s, so altivec has a bigger presence".

"But Avie, Altivec is for PROS! It's not for some Bozo consumer, they would just waste it on games! Plus, our margins on the iMacs would take a 2% hit if we built them with G4s!!! You bozo!"

"Well, at least we could consider a larger display, Steve. Consumers are starting to balk at 15" CRTs on $1200 computers"

"15" is huge! What are you, stupid! Big displays are too heavy. The iMac sells because it's cute. It's faster than any $999 windows box at what those idiots use it for...all those iMac bozos do is email and surf all day, they don't need anything more!1 Damn-it Avie, what the hell do I pay you for!?

"but Steve, Junkyard Dawg posted this lineup, and a few arguments for G4 iMacs, and they're very compelling. And he pointed out that OS X and games really shine on larger displays. Here, take a look"

"Oh, ok. Great idea, Avie! I didn't make you my right hand man for nothing. You're the one I can always count on to keep the bozos at bay. Keep up the good work"

<Steve goes back to cutting iMovies on his 2.4 GHz Powermac G5 prototype, with 36" plasma display and 5 button scroll-wheel mouse>

It's been mentioned, but I thought it was worth repeating.

Motorola's new roadmap for the G5 does NOT mention Altivec....curious.

That's because the G5 processor (8540) that Motorola outlined will not be used in any Apple products. It is mainly meant for network applications, thus there is no need for AltiVec.
