I am 17 years old, turning 18 in november.

My father asked me what present i would like for my 18th birthday. He was expecting me to ask for a car but i didn't, i asked for a gun.

He said no.

Any advice on how to convince him to buy me one?

    Thank you Applenut!

Violence is bad. killing is bad. Killing animals for fun is bad.

    I'm with xionja and 'nut.

    Why?

If you were a collector or hunter, I'm sure your father wouldn't mind. Somehow I suspect that isn't the case.

    Cause it's kinda cool!

I'd rather have a pair of uzis than a corvette.

Is it safe to assume you're not from Costa Rica then?

Get a car if you can. Having a gun for the reason that 'it's cool' isn't a good reason at all.

From everything that I have ever read from you, and the romanticism of your choice of sigs.... I get the impression that you are too emotionally and psychologically immature to have a gun . . . . and I am sure that is what your father thinks.

Perhaps the thread title should not read "I need Advice"

    but rather

    "I need to grow up"

    or

    "I need help"

Does your state law allow you to purchase/own the type of gun you wish to possess?

If so, then being that you will be an adult by definition, just go out and buy one yourself. OR, have someone buy you an equally valuable gift, and return it and buy the gun(s).

But, don't do anything immoral or illegal with a gun. Join a gun or hunting club. Shoot skeet or the like. There's plenty to do with guns for fun and security.

But, have you ever raced off-road motorcycles? For a small price, they are far more thrilling than firing guns, IMO.

OH BOY, MORE WAYS TO KILL OURSELVEs!!!

just had to get that out of my system . . .back to the topic. Maybe you could ask your dad for plane tickets to boot camp, ya know, comfotable ride, to an uncomfy place. You can have guns their, and kill people too. It's the whole macho thing about guns, "I wanna have them because people will be intimidated by what I say if they know I have a gun." ick, i can say for sure, it won't get you any girlfriends, unless they are all wacked up.

    Finally some valuable advice. Thanks.

I may do that, but the problem is that as long as i live with my parents I must do what they say. I am not planning on moving out soon so I must convince him to let me.

Probably when I go to study to the U.S. next year i may get one there. By the way, how old do you need to be up there to own a gun?

pfflam, don't worry. I won't go around shoting people I dislike, I am not a commie.

I don't think that was exactly what communism was all about.

    But, I agree with Fran. Owning a gun because it's cool is not a reason to own a gun. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

    "Hello?"

"Hey man, we're going out cruising tonight, what are you doing?"

    "Uh, holding my gun."

    "Have fun."

    *CLICK*

Sure, get the gun. Start the downward spiral early.

There isn't a damned thing wrong with owning, shooting or wanting to own and shoot a gun.

    Soulcrusher:

I'll agree with the above post that owning a gun because it's cool is absolutely no reason to own a gun. Perhaps if you plan on moving to an area in the U.S. that allows you to carry and you plan on taking many safety courses and keep current on those courses, trips to the shooting range and licensing I wouldn't advise you to get one.

The novelty will no doubt wear off long before the utility of a car would. You will be ecstatic about your new shiny gun for a while but long after you've put it after the shelf and it gathers dust you'll wish you had a car to move yourself out of your room.

Take the car and run (err... drive). Unless it's a rusted out shit-box that can't run, get the car and save up to buy your gun later.

As far as all this paranoia garbage everyone is spewing, go sell that "OMG WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN!?" garbage somewhere else.

I'm no NRA member, but Jesus Christ, it's not like he's asking for a bag of crack and a nuclear bomb.

I find it amazing that so many here act shocked at the idea of giving something so dangerous as a gun to a teenager are so non-chalant about giving said teenager a car.

    Pop quiz:

Which takes more teenage lives per year: car or gun?

ok, my biggest question is, why?? why do you want a gun? for what purpose? are you gonna hunt? or do you just like the idea of having a weapon in yer hand and the ability to potentially blow someone away at any given time? you arent in a gang, dude. there is no point to owning a gun unless you fear for yer safety or need to hunt to survive.
