I was in line 3 hours early and not one of the lucky ones. One of the Apple store employees mentioned to another within earshot that they only had 500 units and only letting people purchase 2 at a time. No vouchers no nothing from Apple store for those of us that WASTED our time waiting in line while the employees could have said your number 500 there are no more for anyone behind you would have been nice. There was almost a riot as people were told there would be plenty, hell even Apple said there would be plenty. Not even close. ANd now they are saying it could be a month before you see any at the store.

What a load of crap Apple, this was really stupid and you pissed off allot of people. I was going to buy a brand new MacBook Pro 2K plus monitor for another 1K but forget you now.

They said that same thing to me last time and I had one within a few days. I figured they had them they were just holding them back to make it appear as though they were selling out more than they were.

I was at the Palo Alto store lined up starting at 7:30pm on Thursday. It's next to impossible for them to accurately match inventory to the line as there are 18 different SKUs and people cut into line, change their minds, or buy 1 instead of 2 when cards get declined, etc...

That being said, the Palo Alto store, did inventory match the line and tell people when they knew inventory wouldn't support demand...but even that's hard as people showing up late either in the middle of line or at the end throws off numbers.

Apple got conservative with demand. They tend to be more conservative but it's better than over-shipping and have to send them back.

I went to the 14th street NYC store just after 5pm, and the line already ran from 14th and 9th to 18th and 10th. FOr those of you who don't know, those avenue blocks are especially long. I'm pretty sure it was well over 1000 people, but it's hard to judge. Anyway, by the time I got to the store (just before 10pm), they were out of most models, including all AT&T 3G models and most white models apart from 16gb, I think. The first ones to sell out were the white AT&T 16 and 64, but that happened around 7pm. However, they told us that we could get whatever was available now, and then come back in a few weeks and swap it for the one we really wanted without any restocking fees, so that's what I did--I got a 32gb Verizon 3G that I'll swap for the AT&T equivalent when I can. It was freezing cold out there, so the customers were a dedicated bunch. If this is any indication of the demand elsewhere and going forward, I'd say they have another blockbuster release.

Anyway, I am going to be rather dissapointed in Apple if availability is bad through the weekend. What was the rush to put this thing out this exact week? They could have continued to build stock for a week or two until they had millions on hand--it is not like they were racing any competition to market. As I said before, I think the long lines, limited supply story only makes you look desirable for so long--eventually it will make you look unprepared... And I can't imagine international customers wouldn't be annoyed if Apple had to push back their launch again!

Obviously, I take it all back if they blow out sales this weekend. If they sell over a million or two, well, what are you going to do...

    Yes, let's think this over.

Say they sell 500K this weekend, then 100K each of the next two weeks. That means 500K people get to have theirs for two weeks, another 100K for 1 week, and another 100K just bought it.

Your genius plan is, they should wait 2 more weeks so those 700K people can all get theirs at the same time! That way, two weeks from now, no one will have had any use of an iPad.

    Brilliant way to improve distribution!

And then you suggest that international customers would be pissed if their launch was pushed back again. Your solution? Push EVERYONE's launch back a few weeks.

    You're smart

I was at the Corte Madera, CA store more than three hours early (#35). By 5 PM there were hundreds in line. They used a new ticket system, whereby just before you entered the store you told them what iPad configuration you wanted (limit two per person) and within a minute you were in the store. The tickets were in a tray with individual tickets in 18 buckets delineating each of the configurations. Some had way more than others, but I couldn't tell which was which. I ordered two 64 Gb Wi-Fi White units. There were maybe 20 of those left after mine. This system allowed the store to advise those at the line end as each model was sold out. They must have run out before the line was exhausted. Three Target stores all had no more than 10 units, not sure about Best Buy.

Good luck believing that. Who's 'they'?

Even assuming it is true, you'd better not get a nick/scratch on that thing.

What are you talking about? Their manufacturing partners are at full capacity.

They can't produce enough to provide much stock to their channel partners and this is a U.S.-only launch.

After three quarters of iPad sales, I think Apple is starting to have an idea about what the demand is.

And they wouldn't "send back" anything. Normally, the stores probably carry about two weeks of inventory. They didn't even have three hours of inventory.

Their manufacturing partners will run at full capacity for many months and they still won't have enough units. That's why the international launch is staggered. Ideally, everyone on the planet who wants one should be able to buy the iPad on Day 1. That isn't the case because they can't pump out enough of them.

Additionally, the original iPad did not make it to all the countries that the iPhone has been marketed to. That is, the international rollout was never really completed, it got lapped by the release of the iPad 2. Demand outstrips supply even though Apple is deliberately limiting demand by restricting the number of international markets where it rolls out the device.

Our Walmarts had no units. Best Buy had 15 total. Target had five 16G WiFi only. Only one ATT store in the state had units: 5 of the smallest white ones.

Net net: VERY little stock outside of Apple Stores.

Colorado is a big state! You must have done a LOT of driving in a very short time to know all that!

I was in bed today just checking apple stores online and best buy and walmarts in the NYC area, at approximately 3:16pm lQQked up the nearest Walmart (there are none in the NYC area) so I found one in fairview north Bergen nj area- called and spoke to the electronics store mgr and asked him how many people were in line and he said "what line?" and I was the line for the new iPads? And he was like "there's no one here yet" and I asked him how many did you guys get? And he said 25 pieces - so I took a quick shower jumped into a cab across town to the port authority and got a ticket for the #127 nj transit bus and caught the 4:15pm bus to north Bergen nj (88th st stop right across the street from Walmart store) and got my new 64gig white wifi iPad - I figured with all the flooding in new jersey from the rain storms no one would be there and that's a Mexican / Polish / Russian immigrant neighborhood

So most of those people can't afford a 64 gig unit and I was right on the $$ there was no one there people started to show up after 5pm and they had extra stock by the time I left--

So I was stoked that I made that decision to go to nj instead of dealing with all the crowds in NYC and no getting one .. I am typing this post from my new iPad

Good luck to you guys .... trolls included

So is it safe to say that all they stores are sold out and we don't know when they will be available next, other than 2-3 weeks?

I'm not sure of the 500k number in the head line. Granted I'm only guessing by reading everyones posts today, but it sounds like the quantities were extremely limited.

So if each apple store had an average of 500 units, that would be around 120,000. If they each had 1,000 units (which it doesn't sound likely from what I'm reading here). That's about 240,000. Now figure all of the box stores and the carriers had an average of say 50, no wait 100. That would put the number somewhere around 350,000 right?

Granted I'm just guessing, but that's what the analyst do isn't it?

Did anyone get a promise that the stores would have more tomorrow or Sunday? I don't believe they can stock too many in the apple stores themselves, but they may have them in local warehouses...

Btw, long lines at BestBuy in Tyler Tx.

Lines moved fast at the Mall fo Georgia but they sold out fast. Everyone else was sold out also, Walmart, Target and Best Buy in my area. Thankfully got my white 64gb. One thing some said the iPad 2 would charge via "high speed" usb but doesn't seem to be the case.

I didn't think a usb could charge the iPad.

There were hundreds of people in line at my local Apple store. I couldn't get there until just before 5, and they were sold out before they even started "selling" the iPad. Apparently they gave out "cards" hours before and were sold out of all models by the time I got there. Last year, I went in on the launch evening (6pm - and didn't they start selling iPad 1 in the morning?) and there were 5 people in line...got one easily. So disappointed right now.

Best Buy had gotten quite a few, got there too late since I thought the Apple store would be the better bet...by 5:40 they only had the Verizon model left. Target had gotten 5 total and gave out "reservation cards" at 1pm.

However many they made - that's how many they sold. I don't think there are any left in any store, anywhere even with it only being on sale for a single evening... unless they put some stock away for the next day, or next week, etc.

My Apple store said once they sold out nothing until Tuesday.

What makes a particular Apple Store a "flagship" store? I keep reading this term but can't make heads or tails out of it. My dictionary doesn't help either as it gets into the naval aspect.

    Thanks!

Tuesday is better than 2-3 weeks. That would mean they're in a warehouse that doesn't work weekends I suppose. Ship Monday, on site Tuesday.

The walmart here only had 4 iPads - that's insane.
