Biggest POS channel on television - and the founding father of crap like Big Brother, The Bachelor, Weakest Link and The Mole.

    Thanks, and FU MTV!

Gotta agree on everything except The Mole. Pretty decent show. Not sophomoric.

I an article on CNN.com they were saying that when Knoxville got knocked out by Butterbean he was snoring because of the concussion. I thought he was goofing around, but he usually doesn't snore!

I've seen a person store after getting knocked out. I've seen people snore right after an epileptic seizure when the normally don't snore. It's an odd phenomena.

Saying movies like Jackass, is going to pollute our culture and ruin the country, is about as dumb as saying Apple is going do die tommarow. And both have been used way to often.

Hell when Elvis first started wigglin' his hips it was a 'national emergency' that was going to pollute the minds of young people and ruin a good country. Sound familiar?

So all you conservatives climb down from your high moral horse, and give it a break. Jackass isnt going to kill American society any more than Elvis did. Its just guys doing stupid stunts. And if you dont like it thats just a matter of opinion. But stop with the apocalyptic bullshit.

Me and my friends do similar stuff. Such as car jousting, and road snowboarding (while being towed behind a car.) Its just fun to do stupid stuff. Get out of the house someday, and live a little. And in the meentime stop being such a tight ass. If anything is going to ruin this country its going to be the blind hardline conservatives.

Jackass is the modern reality version of "The Three Stooges" stupid, harmless* idiousy. We need it every once in a while.

*Well maybe not harmless when real idiots try to copy them...

I will see it. It's probably the best comedy this year.

For a movie with no plot or Oscar worthy performances, it did well this past weekend.

Kids in general are "stupid" and will copy this behavior. They have in fact copied stuff from the tv show and some have died. This of course doesn't stop them from making a movie. I cannot believe how bad things have gotten during the past 20 or so years. When people are no longer civilized that is the end of civilization so we are well on the way. Just turn on the TV and look at all the violence and depravity, both real and imagined. I don't know what it's lke in other countries but here in the US the situation is grim. The media is filled with crap like this, both parents both work and leave their kids home alone unsupervised and anyone (and I mean anyone) can get a gun. Add to this our dependency of outher countries for everything. We don't do anything anymore except sell "stuff" made elsewhere. We even get our food from other countries now. The next 20 years is going to be a real eye-opener but by then it will probably be too late. So do yourselves a favor and don't give in to garbage like Jackass. Keep your IQ's above the marginal line. Remember, having dumb friends doesn't make you smarter.

Are you being sarcastic? Or just plain nieve?

Besides stupidity is all relative. What was once sin, is now everyday occurance. Its simply a natural progression of society. Not a sign of comming implosion.

Violence and depravity have always existed in human society. We have become no more violent towards our fellow citizen then 50 years ago. We are still just as tempermental and prone to anger as we ever where.

The only thing that has changed is the broad media saturation of such events. Its not that we are becomming more violent per say, its just that it is getting reported more.

You need to stop comparing personal tastes to IQ levels. Jackass is simply a show. Like it or hate it its just guys doing stupid stuff. Guys have always done damn stupid stuff (albiet sometimes not as extreme as Jackass, but then if we did there wouldnt be a need for a movie.) Likeing Jackass is no more a sign of intelligence, than loving the show Friends (shudder.)

Our future is not bright. But it's not because of things like Jackass. Well, not too much. I wanna see this movie, but don't want to support MTV, but I probably will give in. The CKY movies (1 and 2, haven't seen 3) ruled, I owned them as soon as they came out. I have never been able to watch more than 5 minutes of Jackass, it sucks so much, but from what my friends told me, the movie is worth it.

Eh CKY was just too gross for me. I prefer Jackass' emphasis on stunts more than guys running and shitting at the same time.

Everyone is talking about how jackass is not responsibile for the state of our society, or the reason for violent behaviour. And you guys are right, it is not the problem. Just like violent video games or the 11 'o clock news are not the problem either. All of these things are part of the problem though. It is the acute combination of a wide majority of things that create problem.

Being exposed to violent video games, violent tv shows, etceteras.... they don't make me want to go out and commit violent acts. I am in turn more conditioned to want to see violence; I expect it in a way. I also don't shy away from it as much. Getting used to something is like building a tolerance, and that is what makes it easier to do something.

I don't want to turn this into another "Bowling for Columbine" thread, but that film made me really question a lot of things about this country and the world in general. The United States is a more violent country than a lot of others. And it isn't one thing that is at fault, it is an entire host of things going wrong, and Jackass (and wonderful channels like MTV, which I should add is no longer officially Music television) the move aren't really contributing in a terribly positive way.

Sure, people have always been known to do stupid things, but why do we applaud it? Because it is funny? I suppose... but still, something is amiss here...

That's becaue you are not eight years old. I guarantee any kid that gets their values from todays media is going to be screwed up. Seriously screwed up. Children cannot rationalize the same way adults do. An adult can watch Jackass and say "Look at these idiots" while a child may say "Cool, lets go outside and try this". Today's media is a big problem but many parents are an even bigger problem. How can you let an eight year old kid come home from school to an empty house? I just cannot fathom this. When I was a kid parents actually cared more about their children than an extra vacation or a nicer car. Things are becomming more and more violent too. It's not just because crime is being reported more. I mean, how often did kids shoot their teachers 20 years ago? Huh? Look at the facts. We are in a downward cycle. And yes, MTV sucks. Music television indeed.

That is quite possibly the most insane thinking I have ever heard. You think a violent act like murder is no longer a sin because it happens more often? You consider it progress? Scary.

    I completely agree, well put.

As for your response to my post, yeah, you're probably right. I haven't really attempted to put myself in the perspective of a younger mind. I remember when I was a child, I got upset at my parents when they would drink water while driving... "drinking and driving" Simple mind...

    Good points.

TV rots the brain. But try and take it away from the masses. I watch a lot of TV. I also read a lot of books. And read a lot of magazines and newspapers. And I listen to quite a bit of radio. I'm always absorbing, TV is just another media form of absorbing information. If abused you turn into a vegetable.

I won't try and defend shows like Jackass. It's not my job. If Jackass goes away, it will not affect my life in the least. But why have things changed? When I was a kid my parents would restrict what me and my brother would watch on TV. If a show like Jackass was aired we would definitely be forbidden to watch it. I think my parents did me a service doing that. Why is parenting so lax now?

Except that violent acts of murder are happening less often, not more. While even the nature of violent crime seems to be different, comparisons are tinted by nostalgia. With more people living in any given area, violence itself (per capita) is down considerably over levels from decades ago. Poverty still has the highest capacity to visit violence upon people, followed only by certain politics (which often emerge from poverty) like fundamentalism, sexism, racism, etc etc... You must distinguish between what is qualified and reported today, and what actually is, violence.

Slavery, wars, civil rights struggles, organized crime, hopeless depression era poverty. How many people were victimized within the constructs of a system that failed to even recognize them as victims?

A serial killer will kill a handful or more people in one lifetime; a gang member, similar, probably less. A warlord will kill that many in one hour. Relative to the rest of the world, N.America is virtually without violence.

People looking to media to lay blame, or craft solutions, are probably looking in the wrong place. A more disciplined/respectful media might make a small difference, maybe... but most likely, nothing noticeable.
