For once, I don't completely disagree with you, fellow. There is this saying I heard once, going along the line 'If you're not a communist at twenty, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative at forty, you have no brain.'
While I don't completely agree with the saying (I think I shall never be either), there is some truth in what you say. Many teenagers feel the need to rebel. The sad thing is this is mostly just rebellion for rebellion's sake.
I, when I was a teenager, might have been a little too cool (in that I thought things through -too?- much), but I always felt my rebellion fellow-youngsters a bit pathetic.
The main reason is that there are really few 'rebels' who have a clear view of their objectives, and a good reason (justification) to rebel. Most teenagers, however, just direct puberic rages into some kind of rebellion.
We must also take into account peer pressure. You have to be cool. At a pretty basic level, one wants to be part of a social group (of people of the same age). What better to prove one's loyalty, than to take one the rest of the world? (there is actually an entire field in psychology and anthropology that deals with this matter).
Well anyway, you can all go back to the topic at hand now.
PS, you cannot claim indifference and speak about the subject in the same breath, not even to respond. If that traps you, well, you're trapped then. People often feign indifference over the things that draw them most strongly: Trying to be nonchalant about members of the other sex; taking no interest in their old neighbor's great new job and so forth... Teens do it most transparently of all.
Even the name, soulcrusher, rings with dissonance. Did you read a little a Nietsche and decide you were so dark and unappreciated because you knew the awful truth and the rest of us refused to see it? I bet that works pretty good with young girls, but young girls are stupid, and the appeal wears off even for them. I know plenty of girls who up to their early tweens chased tragic losers, they chase doctors and lawyers now, and can't get them, but other female stupidities trouble them now.
Please, tell us your age and I will tell you who you are. You look young in the photo. 17, 18?
It's about trying to make yourself be an individual?
This comes up often. for instance, at a movie theater, when a group of teenagers (god dammit, I'm getting old if I'm saying that) won't stfu in the back of the theater even though they've been asked repeatedly... Quin explains to me that it is in their culture and their individualism. I'm sure she phrases it well, but I don't get it at all. I don't see individuals, I see a group of bastards ruining my $10 movie going experience.
Then again, I dressed a little weird when I was in high school. I don't know why. I guess because the other people I hung out with were. As soon as I left high school I pretty rapidly switched my wardrobe to something more respectable.
I don't know. I just don't get it. I guess shove whatever you want through your body, but I swear to god if one of you punk ass "individuals" ruins my 12:05am showing of LotR on Dec 18 it's your ass
There's a lot of latent homoeroticism in this room. As a fellow AI poster said, "it's not the homoeroticism that bothers me, it's the latentness of it!"
yes, jack and i have had quite a few conversations about individuality, as it relates to rude behavior at the movie theatre. these people are making loud comments to the screen, laughing at things their friends are saying, etc, thus disrupting other's viewing experience. by acting out in the theatre, they're saying, "i'm a wild/crazy/unique/"real"/etc person. deal with it, you old square." anyone who dares ask them to be quiet is yelled at, hassled, blatantly ignored, because its a "free country". people need to understand that there is a difference between individuality and being a self-absorbed brat. i'm not asking for everyone to look or act the same, but with the freedom of individuality comes the responsibility of being polite to others. i see the whole "i'm young and wild, you're not and un-cool" sentiment, and its echoed in most music, movies, commercials etc aimed at young people. be freaky and wild, i don't care, but just realize that if someone is asking you to be quiet, it might not be because they're tryin' to supress your wild fun, it might mean you're too loud!
though as we were originally talking about piercings... i don't care about those, its a passive expression of individuality, it doesn't disrupt a movie theatre or other public place. its just an adornment. like a necklace or ring, or even makeup. of course, wearing one has certain connotations in society, so don't expect to get a job as a lawyer. personally, i don't think i'd date a guy with piercings. i dunno, i like the look and feel of pure skin, without any metal objects disrupting it.
oh, and if any punk-ass boyfriend ruins my 12:05am showing of LotR on dec 18 by bitching about other people in the theatre, it'll be your ass.

That's why I buy DVD's.
For someone of my age it doesn't matter anyway if I see LotR-TtT a year later. There's no need for me to be considered  just because I made it into the premiere.
Dude, get it out. You'll give your girlfriend an episiotomy.

I can tell you're a new father. Men just don't use terms like episiotomy until they go through fatherhood.
I just want the tape, who knows where they've been. We can sell it on the web and use the proceeds to fund overpriced mac purchases! hahaha...

Haha or the lack of a strong liberal voice in Fireside Chat! Damn, I just want to watch the tape.

I am not a "rebel". There are no rebels these days you know, I did it for merely aesthetic reasons.

You bring up a good point. There are no more "rebels" these days. Everybody's pierced and poked and inked and dyed.
A surly James Dean would pass as shy kid with ADD (attention deficit diso—hey! look at the elephant!) these days.
Wanna be a rebel? Try these tips:
- floss after meals
- eat all your veggies
- listen to your parents
- put the Sony PS2 down
- post something reasonable in AI
