HA. do you realize how small a 12pt font would be at that resolution (1920 or even 1600) on a 15.2 inch 3:2 display.

Maybe he meant that he wants a 26" TiBook.

It certainly would be good to be able to switch to a lower resolution for easier reading of text when needed, but I'd mostly be using it for film/HD visual effects and I don't have a problem with itty-bitty text in my menus as long as I can view the shots at hi res.

what program would you be doing this in?

all of adobes palletes would be useless and FCP probably would be close to useless.

is it even possible to pack that many pixels in such a small space?

I think 1440 across is about the max I would consider usable.

If a G5 (a REAL G5, not an upgraded G4) was available today, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

I currently have an 8600/200 so I can't wait to get a new computer. As it is, I've come close to caving in and buying one of the dual 1GHz machines on several occasions.

What would I buy if Apple released it _right now_?
    • Some PCI card to allow Macs to catch up with the <a href="http://www.americas.creative.com/products/category.asp?category=165&maincategory=1"; target="_blank">Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigies</a> of the world .

    • A hybrid <a href="http://www.cbandtv.com/"; target="_blank">C-Band</a>/KU-Band/SECAM/PAL/NTSC/<a href="http://www.4dtv.com/"; target="_blank">4DTV</a>/<a href="http://www.DVB.org/"; target="_blank">DVB</a>/<a href="http://www.fcc.gov/mmb/prd/dtv/#FAQ"; target="_blank">HDTV</a>/DBS TV and AM/FM/<a href="http://www.XMradio.com/"; target="_blank">XM</a> radio tuner with included PVR and VDR(Video Disc Recorder. You know. DVDs and CDs) software. or just get ATI and nVidia to cough up the coax jacks and pin-outs on the <a href="http://www.ati.com/na/pages/technology/hardware/radeon_8500/"; target="_blank">Radeon 8500</a> and <a href="http://www.nvidia.com/Pages.nsf/Lookup/hdtv/$file/hdtv.PDF"; target="_blank">GeForce 2 GTS</a>'s hidden HDTV decoders and make Mac drivers.

    • Replace the tacky SuperDrives and DVD-ROM/CD-RW drives with <a href="http://www.dvdforum.com/tech-dvdmulti.htm"; target="_blank">DVD-Multi Recorder drives</a>. or at least BTO DVD-RAM drives and the acknowledgement that DVD-RAM discs are perfectly compatible with all 4th generation or greater DVD players. and the great advantages in ease of use over the linear and often WORMy DVD-R/RW drives.

    • Although I myself wouldn't buy this right now. as I got my 733mhz QuickSilver G4 in december. I'm sure that a mirror image of myself that was still waiting on the fence would leap at the chance to get a G4 that would have more than one ZIF slot(Kinda like my brother's old <a href="http://www.umax.com/supermac/s900/"; target="_blank">Radius né UMAX SuperMac S900</a>). so that instead of being forced to either buy a single CPU machine. and throw your current CPU in the garbage bin when you want another CPU. so as to fit a new multi-CPU ZIF module. or buy a multi-CPU machine. and pay too much for one or more CPUs you won't really be able to use until several months down the road. when the going price for G4 ZIF modules is substantially lower. you could simply buy a mono-CPU machine. and add CPUs later. as your budget allows. and your needs require.

Adding two, three or five(Don't believe the lies about lack of room. the Quicksilver's motherboard is about 40% the size of the inside of it's case) extra ZIF slots to every new G4's motherboard would allow Apple to sell lots of "Multi-CPU ready" Macs immediately. without running into production delays due to not having enough CPUs on hand at the moment. as all that would be out of stock at any time would be ZIF modules. of which there are plenty on the market at this time from third parties like Sonnet, XLR8, Powerlogix and OWC(By the way. two little known facts of PowerPC multiprocessing. you can actually <a href="http://www.umax.com/supermac/knowledge/solutions.cfm?docs=KB00172"; target="_blank">mix different clock speeds and revisions of PowerPC</a> on the same motherboard. and. unlike Apple always said. G3s are <a href="http://www.appleturns.com/scene/?id=557"; target="_blank">quite capable of multiprocessing</a>). this would also allow multiple CPUs in consumer machines like the iMac. as the price of some extra ZIF slots on a motherboard can be measured in fractions of a penny.

So if I went to <a href="http://www.Apple.com/"; target="_blank">Apple's front page</a>. and it said in 200 point type: "New! the Apple (Insert one of the above). starting at $XXX.XX!" with a "Buy Now" button right next to it. I'd click without even thinking(Hmmm? maybe I should go check right now <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> ).

The main thing that I and thousands of others have been waiting for, is an Apple subnotebook. No optical drive, around 3 pounds, etc. I would seriously do whatever it took to get one of these. There seems to be quite a pent-up demand, why doesn't Apple do anything about it?

The other thing is an iPod remote control. I'd pay $50 or so if it had an LCD screen that displayed the titles and so forth (ala most MD players).

I think I would by a rack-mountable Power Mac server. I can think of some things I could do with a server, but just to have one....I'm sure that even though this sucker's probable use in a real environment means it's not going to be seen that much because it's locked up in some server farm, I bet Apple will still make it look freakin' cool. I'm thinking its going to have a black front panel with a shiny smooth surface. In the middle, a white matte Apple logo that somewhat embossed into the panel.

Hardware-wise, it will probably have multi-processors (2, 4, 6 ?????)...whatever, but you know it's going to kick some serious ass! No keyboard, mouse, or optical media drive. The entire thing will be controlled remotely.

And another thing (besides the 17" iMac)...

For those who need a laptop not for their primary workstation, but for doing presentations and email, word processing, etc. Essentially, something intended as a second computer that is fully portable.

    Titanium Sub-Laptop:

    10" LCD.

    1 GHz G4 (because the Powermacs will already have 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 GHz G5s).

    Combo drive

    30 GB HD, 5400 RPM

    512 MB RAM

    Full sized keyboard

    S-video out, VGA out.

Nvidia Geforce 4 mobility or whatever, w/ 32 MB vRAM.

Full gamut of ports, including audio input for those of us who like to record music (take the sub notebook to a jam session or a gig).

Of course, a battery w/6-8 hrs real life.

    Lightweight, small, and fully portable.

    $1800

Ultra thin, ultra light, and ultra portable. Because some people already have a desktop and don't need a laptop w/ a cinema display.
