What do you think the new PM G5's will look like?

    iMac2=hemisphere

    PMG5 =Sphere

    I think that the most important thing they need to resolve with the actuel PowerMac is the noise produced by the fans. They need to combine the technology of the cube and the extensibility of the PowerMac. My PowerMac 466 makes far more noise than a PC 550MHz that I use at work and brought one time to home a week-end to work with the two machines.

    Is the iMac fanless? I don't know that?

    I think the case will shrink, with the handles still being present, but getting a lot smaller. Maybe metallic? Plus, one of the complaints about the current design is how hard it is to cluster/rack mount. I'd say, look for a low profile server case to be intro'd with the G5. All the current servers that do this have nasty beige/white cases. I'd expect the server case to have clear plastics in the middle, with chromed buttons and accents on the ends. Yum! Plus (since OS X supports RAID) a firewire drive cage holding up to 8 HD's. Gotta love that storage!

    I personally think that if Apple can roll out some killer cpus, in cases like this, they can really start to make a dent in the server market. People really are looking for something easy and reliable, and Apple is just the company to deliver it.

    The really sad thing is that my company makes those beige servers and could'nt design their way out of a paper bag.

    No names, but it rhymes with Fewlett-Lackard.

    The scientific community may have some say on the matter it seems. Check out this article:

    <a href="http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0202/22.cluster.php"; target="_blank">http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0202/22.cluster.php</a>;

    Ferro, is there a reason you threw the "trust me" comment in there?

    <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

    Anyway, I stick to my original story. If they just alter the shape a little bit (could benefit the scientific types noted above) and redo the front, I would be happy - as would most Mac users I think. A sphere would be totally impractical. What if you want to put it on the floor? Are you going to feel good about pusing a relatively unstable (even with a base) sphere next to your feet / chair's feet the way we are with the current crop?

    I can just picture myself bumping the spehere off it's small base (a large one like the mockups we've seen 100 times is not even a possibilility - why have a huge stand for a small enclosure?), and having it roll under my feet, wreaking all kinds of havoc.

    CO-recta-moondoh!

    To me, it just doesn't make sense that the enclosure would not be able to stand on its own. Even the iMac doesn't require any supports or stand-like devices. Neither did the Cube. Why then would Mr. "let the machine be true to itself" design a Power Mac that requires assitance to stay put on your desk?

    I think the Sphere is just so novel (because all computers before the iMac (and even since) have had their fair share if square edges and right angles - so it seems "neat" to us that a computer would be round. But in reality it would serve no practical purpose and would actually detract from the ole "form fits function" idea. The sphere thing won't happen (*confirmed*).

    We may never know...

    Oh and "I think" apple will get rid of the lucite fad in favor of a grey/silver matte finish... As for shape...

    Either a stackable cube or obelisk is my prediction...

    I don't understand those scientists. I have seen tons of G4s in racks for scientists and for clusters. I think they just don't know a product exists <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

    What I would be happy with (if the opportunity came to buy a new Power Mac) Non-revolutionary. Square, not rounded. Same basic design but with 2 optical drive bays (is it so much to ask for?), cube like plastics but Titanium instead of white. Handles are less obvious, and feet become hi-fi like.

    I like the 'Sky Scraper' idea. That would be attention grabbing.

    I don't think a modular design is going to happen, graphics artists and the like don't tinker with the hardware that much.

    An Apple server on the other hand...

    PS has anyone else bought a PC case for there Mac to go into? I'm curious about the numbers. For the record my Power Mac is in a <a href="http://www.lian-li.com/product.php?action=viewPD&prdid=362"; target="_blank">Lian-Li PC-60</a>. It fits in with the furniture better than the El Capitan case.

    the current products are not practicle for the large clusters they want, 500-1000 pm's wastes a lot of space that could easily handle 4x the proccessors if engineered correctly... think pizza box?

    from an earlier post ... <a href="http://homepage.ntlworld.com/phillip.briggs1/G5_1.htm"; target="_blank">prototype g5 pics</a>

    I hope Apple makes this sort of thing easier with the next gen'. Simple things like making the motherboard fit to standard PC mounts, Organiseing the conponants on the MB so it is the 'right way round' (current Powermac MB's are a mirror image of PC ones).

    On the Next Case idea. I hope it's not 'dull' like the new iMac, that sort of finish gets real dirty & marked up real fast. Adding an 2nd full size front drive bay is doable without severe modification of the external size, And keep the handles.

    All you people wanting a smaller case, why? The G5 is to be the PRO Mac. Expansion should be the no1. priority.

    The skyscraper idea is laughable...easily knocked over and everything would have to be mounted vertically...so performance slows...plus the thing is like a giant collumn of heat....all coming out the top probably....it will be a CuteMac, not a PowerMac.

    1.) no reason it would get knocked over with so much weight at the base. They could also design it so that it sort of slants out at the bottom and then gets narrowed at the top.

    2.) huge column of heat= good thing. hot air rises. probably would be extremely efficient at cooling with a fan or two at the bottom

    3.) tower motherboards are already mounted vertically

    4.) being 9 inches in width and depth would allow drives to remain horizontal

    How about <a href="http://www.everymac.com/systems/vertegri/quicktower/quicktower_e2pro.html"; target="_blank">this</a> or <a href="http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_quadra/stats/mac_quadra_950.html"; target="_blank">this</a>?

    But then. maybe Jobs should just <a href="http://www.lowendmac.com/next/nextdimension.html"; target="_blank">get it over with</a>.

    Obelisk...hmmm...I can see the ad now. The obelisk is sitting in the middle of the desert, then a bunch of monkeys appear and start smashing P4s and Althons around it.

    About the Sphere and a stand: It hovers! Duh!

  • Reply 36 of 67
    ya! it could use magnets on a small base and it could hover anywhere in the room!

    all i know is when i see a new powermac design here is what will happen to me when i see it

    yeah, why not wrap it in a huge electromacgnetic field capable of lifting both the computer and the screen of the surface...nooo, taht wouldn't totally kill the screen, the HD, the memory and pretty much every other device...
