As an example: The other day, an obscure band came up in conversation, Urge Overkill. Everybody liked the name, but nobody had actually heard their music. Somebody had an old-school iPod, and thought that they had a few albums by the band. They checked, and yes indeed, they did.
We all listened, and several people really liked the band (including me). The iPhone users had only stuff that was parsed and curated and triple-checked for space limitations. The iPod owner could pull up the obscure stuff, and we all broadened our horizons.
Of course in theory, with iTunes match, he could have done that on any sized iPhone.

Only if the theory includes iTunes stocking lots of old obscure bands that never had any hits. Do they have the complete Sun Ra discography? The Dead Milkmen? Son House?
All these *leaks* *previews* are suggesting a rather mundane update. The phone may be thinner. A5 processor replacing A4. It may or may not have a larger screen. What of edge-to-edge screen? That rumor seems to have died. Let's not forget 8MP camera. NFC seems to be a forgotten thing.
But wait - the mute button might move. Woo hoo!
Have we reached the point in smartphone design such that no groundbreaking change is left? This once happened in the PC industry. Then application-specific designs were developed - workstations for those involved in CAD and animation; laptops for workers on the go; netbooks; ...
Will this happen in the smartphone industry? Or are we seeing that already in the form of the tablet, not to mention iPod Touch?

I believe they upload what they dont recognise. So, they will.

Revolutions are followed by evolutions. I dont even think that Apple have another product which can be as revolutionary as the last two - iPhone an iPad. I dont think they will be as impressive with whatever they do in TV, and after that?.... I dont think much is left.
Sure that could happen however that will use data. Given the paucity of data plans (at least in the US) I do not want to be having to pay for more data just because of limited space on my phone.
64 GB makes sense and I would be surprised if Apple stick with 32GB for the second model running.
I'm ready to replace my 3GS 32GB. It would be ideal if my next model was 64GB.
Mostly if you need 64GB of space though, it's because your a gamer, just like mostly if you are interested in a big screen it's for the same reason.
If the large screen model we've seen rumours of is actually the new iPod touch, and it comes in 64GB like last time, I don't see how only a tiny fraction of customers would be upset that the new iPhone 5 is only 32GB.
I have a pretty huge music collection and carry most of it around with me and I can get by with 32GB. The average person is not going to be put out by "only" having 32GB of space on their phone.
Only if the theory includes iTunes stocking lots of old obscure bands that never had any hits. Do they have the complete Sun Ra discography? The Dead Milkmen? Son House?
False. If you have the music, which was the original assumption, then it will be in the cloud and downloadable to your device. Or did you have some other idea about how to get music onto your 2TB iphone other than already owning it on your PC?
With the camera resolutions increasing over the various iPhone generations, it would be nice to see a bump in capacity to compensate. Also, the iPhone screen resolution quadrupled in the last generation as well which means higher resolution textures for newer apps which consumes more space. Without a bump storage, we can fit less amount of pictures, videos and applications with each generation.

I wasn't talking about another product. I was talking about evolutionary upgrades in the iPhone line. From the first iPhone to the 3G, from 3GS to 4, there were interesting, surprising, significant upgrades. I am just wondering if all the surprises are out of the bag.
Only if the theory includes iTunes stocking lots of old obscure bands that never had any hits. Do they have the complete Sun Ra discography? The Dead Milkmen? Son House?
I laughed out loud when you said that Urge Overkill was obscure, that was funny...but that's besides the point.
So you are saying that you want a 2 TB phone just so that every once in a while you can be a conversation superstar when the odd opportunity arises? Anything that has ever been on the iTunes Store will be available to match. Ever heard of The Deaths? They can easily be classified as obscure, having never gained any fame outside of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area...both of their albums are on iTunes.
The point is, especially for music and photos - iCloud makes those things only a click away - if you own the music and have it in you iTunes library, it will be available to you through iCloud if you are subscribed to the mayching service. It is very relevant to speak of iCloud in this discussion if the argument is about music and photo storage.
The comment about showing a good example of the Coen Brothers - are you serious? "Here, let's just crowd around my phone together and watch Fargo!" Yeah right!
Heck yes, it is. The only reason I never had service with my first-gen iPhone was the forced data plan. I refuse to pay for something I don't need, don't want, and wouldn't use.
When did Apple ever declare the iPhone to be a full capacity, pocket-sized media server? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Apple ever intended the iPhone to fulfill that role.
Another way to look at it: How many recharges of an iPhone does it take to go through 32 GB of media/data? Ten, perhaps? If you have to stop and recharge then can't one re-sync at the same time to get that obscure file you think you're going to need?
I hate having to carefully curate my 170 GB music collection for my iPhone, it's a real pain in the ass. iTunes Match won't save me for the time being, because
1) it won't be available in Europe, at least not for quite a while
2) like most people I have a strictly capped data allowance on my iPhone. My provider throttles my 3G-speeds after 500 MB. Yes, that's MEGABYTES. Such practices are par for the course in Europe.
So, I would have jumped at a 64 GB iPhone. Oh well.

Can someone point me to A SINGLE PHONE that has 64GB built in memory? Yeah, didn't think so. I love how people are acting like 64GB is whats normal these days, when pretty much not a single consumer phone has this capacity.
Because Apple's reputation and success are based on perpetuating what's "normal", yes?
IF this rumor is true, it may be because of what everyone is saying about Apple pushing iCloud - NOT because a 64GB phone isn't "normal".

I used to feel this way. Always got the biggest and baddest iPhone.
Then I got an iPad with 64G.
All of a sudden I realized that I'm no longer using the memory on my iPhone.
Guess I'll be saving $100 when the iP5 comes out. Mostly, I use my iPhone for phone calls and texts these days.
I was the same. I hardly have anything on my iPhone 4 32gb since I bought my iPad 2. I have 24gb free on the iPhone now.
Sure that could happen however that will use data. Given the paucity of data plans (at least in the US) I do not want to be having to pay for more data just because of limited space on my phone.

Meaning what? There's not Wi-Fi everywhere and you're forced to have a data plan. The discussion is relevant.
Relevant, yes.
Cause for bemoaning, avoidance of purchase and other such extremes; no.

Why own an iPhone then?
Why own an iPhone then?
Straight answer: I won it.
Real answer: Why should I be forced to have a data plan to enjoy an iOS-based phone? No other OS comes close to the phone features or ease of use.
