Why would I want to develop for a screen that forces me to give up resolution for some apps while allowing me to have all of it for another, based on the use thereof?
Yes, I know. You think that everything should come in only one size. How dare Apple even consider making two sizes of iPads?
Besides, developing for a new screen size is entirely optional. The rumors say that it will have the same resolution as the iPhone 4s - so iPhone 4s apps will run without change. If the app requires actual size (like a ruler app), the developer would have to update the app - but there are very few examples like that. If the developer wants to update his app to make it look better on an iPad Mini, he's free to do so, but it's not required.
Once again, you're coming up with every silly argument in the world to try to justify your irrational hatred for a product that no one is forcing you to buy. It would simply be another option - for the people who DO want a smaller tablet.
Do we have enough 3GS owner holding out to get that sales number? The general opinion on this board says 4 and 4S owners will sit this one out and wait for iPhone 5S.
Where can I find this 'general opinion'?
And, even if your statement were true, why should anyone pay attention to a 'general opinion' that is based on nothing but incomplete rumors and doesn't say anything about phone features, specs, battery life, etc?
You think that everything should come in only one size.
Nope. I'm looking specifically at usability and ease of content creation.
Besides, developing for a new screen size is entirely optional.
So none of the textbook makers redo their books for the smaller iPad, no schools buy the smaller iPad over the regular one because they can't get their books on it, and the smaller iPad flops because it has a minuscule subset of the development base that the iPad proper has…

The rumors say 1024x768, don't they? A smaller (physical) iPad/2. 4:3, not 3:2. Or even 16:9 and some resolution, I've heard, but never 3:2…

… Nope… Trying to see why anyone who matters would develop for it if there are significant barriers between its development and work on the regular iPad (there are).
