I can honestly say I've never used an iPad, or an Android tablet for that matter, other than a couple minutes at the local Best Buy or Future Shop. Obviously I can't say which offers a better experience. However I have owned both iPhone and Android phone and I don't believe they differ all that much from their larger form siblings other than phone capabilities and screen size difference. I do feel the Android software probably would be better suited in a tablet than iOS but for me I probably would still prefer an iPad because it just, like most apple products, just doesn't look or feel cheap like that of most Android products and I just prefer iOS. Just my opinion on that. What baffles me though is there seem to be an endless amount of Apple haters, who happen to be Android bum buddies, and obviously Android outsells iPhone for obvious reasons(variety of cheap phones, flooded market of Android phones, and available on every network). So how is it that the iPad outsells Android tablets by a wide margin. Are the Android faithfuls not buying tablets or are they secretly buying iPads. I do have a theory on it though but not really sure it's the reason. My theory is that the multitude of Apple haters are not really that many but the small amount of them just go from forum to forum posting as they do. Most are also little 14 year old's who's Mom bought them their brand spanking new, 2012 model, state of the art Android phone with the new Android os 2.2 (with an unheard of option to get upgraded to ICS 4.0 in 3 years....maybe), for free with a contract and won't buy them a tablet because it's too expensive. That or all the Android users feel they have a 5 inch phone, so no need for a tablet. As ridiculous as those theories sound I do feel like there is some truth to them. Would be interesting to understand why the iPad outsells Android tablets the way it does. I do also remember reading that competitors can not seem to match the value of the iPad. That may not be the case anymore or is it.
Millions of users or millions of units to carrier stores by carriers desperate for "anything but an iPhone"? No one knows since Samsung counts channel stuffing as "sales".
It's not only the carriers but the Franchise owners as well. My brother's brother in law is part owner of a sprint store in Michigan and he complains all the time about how iPhone is hurting his business. He tries desperately to persuade customers who come into his store to buy an Android device instead of an iPhone. Really amazes me that a device which has so many factors against it can consistently sell through so many units. For someone like me who knows enough about tech it wouldn't work. If I go into a sprint store with the notion to buy an iPhone, a sales rep couldn't talk me into another device because I would be able to see past the BS. Imagine though the clueless people, or isheep as Android users (the real sheep) like to call them, only know the iPhone and are set to buy one, only to be talked into an Android phone. Imagine how many sales are lost for Apple that way. This has been happening for a long time and everywhere. I wonder how long Apple can sustain this though. Eventually this has got to start hurting them.
But here is the ugly truth: unless Apple continues to innovate and give us the Next, the bottom feeders will win, because most of the world are bottom feeders too, disconnected from the refined and evolved possibilities of humanity.
People lament Steve. I too wish he were still alive.

With billions and billions of dollars behind his visions.
In 2013 an ARM Cortex-A15 with an Img Tech Rogue GPU all at 32nm on a tablet with the display specs mentioned and reasonable battery life, size and weight will be feasible. I have no doubt this rumour is at least partially true in regards to the display resolution but it'll be too little too late. Apple's iPad (3) has a resolution that is plenty high enough so moving forward Apple will simply have a thinner, lighter, and faster iPad over the competition and no "we have higher resolution" spec sheet claim is going to convince anyone reasonable to buy their device.
I don't for one second believe that Samsung will ship a true 299 ppi tablet. Samsung doesn't even ship a true 299 ppi smartphone. The Samsung Note II has a 3 sub-pixel per pixel arrangement (although not RGB) and has a ppi of only 217. I can't imagine Samsung can suddenly manufacture a true 299 ppi (RGB sub-pixel arrangement) tablet with a much larger screen than the Samsung Note II. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is probably the highest ppi screen Samsung has shipped at an astonishing 316 ppi until you realize that the sub-pixel arrangement is RGBG. *
Samsung may use a octo-core (eight-core) CPU with a sexdeca-core (sixteen-core) GPU so Google can tout the "buttery smooth" user interface. Samsung may also use their patented Super Wi-Fi Plus to ensure lackluster wireless connectivity. As many of Samsung products are known to do, we can predict overheating and explosions with the Super Lithium Ion Plus battery which will last at least 2 hours with infrequent use.
* I am certain you know this but I feel compelled to create awareness of how Samsung treats their customers by duping them into believing vastly inferior technology is somehow even close to a proper 326 ppi IPS LCD display with 99% sRGB Color Gamut standard accuracy.
Does a link-up between Samescum and "Don't be evil" Google sound like a marriage made in heaven? Just asking ;~)
Well there needs to be some sort of competition. We can't have one brand only in the whole world making tablets and smart phones. Really. It's gonna happen sooner of later. I think it makes Apple stay on top of things. Reinvent itself again like it did so many times. The only difference is Jobs not being apart of it. Lets hope that Apple's existing group of designers can stay ahead of the curve. I mean its a brutal battle ground. Constantly making and developing products to quench the enemy's missiles of "our better products than Apple". It is gonna happen. The rest of the industry is gonna try and take Apple down. The competition is gonna make something to hurt Apple, and Apple needs that. It rally's the troops and makes them do better or come up with more innovative products we never knew we needed like the real smart phone with a finger stylus. Who knew?
If it's a Dell Mini 10, install OS X on it. When they try to give your son detention for messing with school equipment, take the blame and say, "I refuse to have my child using something that isn't secure. Now it is. You're welcome."
You should think about getting some of that for the netbook.

We don't know yet that it's gonna be a lesser product that an iPad. In fact the specs of the iPhone 5 are less than most flagship phones out now. Not that it matters because it's much more efficient and that is the beauty of Apple products. They don't always have the latest, but usually pointless, gimmicks and technology to claim *cough* *cough* NFC, widgets, removable battery, customization of keyboards (none feel as intuitive as stock ios keyboard) but they just deliver a well built product.
Innovation has gotten to be a gimmick as well. Innovation is what Apple did with the iPhone. The fact that every phone manufacturer has since and soon will be releasing a product that is in some way is a copy of what the iPhone is, paired with a operating system that behaves much like iOS with their own spin on it proves that. Since, Apple has incrementally updated the idea and that I don't mind one bit as I don't see what would be so innovative to do that these devices are missing.
To say Samsung Galaxy s3 is innovative because it has things like s beam, and S voice, which GS3 owners and Samsung lovers talk highly of only months after bashing Siri for being a gimmick, and my personal favorite which I cant even believe is a feature to brag about, palm swipe to take a screen shot. Who the hell thinks pressing a power button and home button is that difficult that you need to swipe your palm across which never works on the first try. Some stuff is handy like the going from a text to a call by moving the phone up to your ear but it isn't innovative. It's just a neat software feature.
What I'd like to see Samsung try and do with the GS4 instead of features like place your forehead on the screen to to dim the brightness and call it innovative is to improve the camera so it doesn't suck compared to most other flagship phones, maybe get good battery life without using a massive battery. Maybe Google can try to make Android more efficient and less buggy. That is much more innovative than stupid ass features that people jump on and think make it the greatest phone/tablet.
Even though I'm pretty sure this tablet will compete with iPad in every way as far as specs go, I doubt the build quality will be on par and Project butter does not make Android all that much better. Not on my phone anyway, which I had to root and do all that mumbo jumbo too, which by the way is not simple at all to do as most Android users like to claim it is as a way to refute the problem of no official updates to their phones. Oh and they also never mention all the issues with flashing a newest Jelly Bean Rom such as, in my case, no video camera working, screen light that doesn't dim, apps that use to work and don't work properly now, Screen flickering weird images when going in and out of apps and locking and unlocking screen, Apps leaving images on the screen when being moved and not being around on the screen and being unable to make the image go away. It varies from device to device but these are issues that they always seem to forget mentioning when talking about how customizable their phones are and are easily updated with custom roms.
I still think this tablet will be descent for most people and will sell successfully but won't really put much of a dent into iPad sales. Especially since iPad 4 will be on the horizon.
On a side note, I should start buying stock in camping equipment making companies just before Apple product releases. Bet Sales usually spike weeks before.

The vastly inferior technology goes beyond the battery. I don't even bother arguing with people though as I'm not one to try and persuade just for the false satisfaction of thinking I have something to do with Apple. The iPhone 5 is superior to GS3 in almost every aspect. The processor, the camera, the screen (I'd rather have a true representative of colors rather than exaggeration of colors that pop out) The aluminum body and the list can go on. It's not hard conclusion to come up with but still all I ever read is the iPhone is a rip off and they dupe their customers. Mean while every year the cost of the iPhone/iPad has gone up as far as what Apple is paying per device to produce but the price for us consumers has stayed the same. I wonder if Samsung can claim the same. I would love to see a comparison of the breakdown of parts and cost for the two. I can guarantee over the years it's the phone manufacturers that use Android that have been the over priced products in comparison.
A point I like to make is recently people complaining about the new proprietary charging cable that iPhone customers are getting bent over by Apple for having to purchase and for having to pay an extra 100 dollars for 16 gigs more or 200 for 48 gigs more. They don't think that maybe most people don't need to purchase a cable since the iPhone comes with one already so the people that choose to buy one probably don't care much. Meanwhile Samsung does the same thing with their 3 tiers of storage space. You can upgrade a GS3 with a sd card for cheaper but I'd have no need as I'd be more than fine with a 16gig phone as I'm not trying to store a porn collection that spans 14 years of collecting on it. Also Samsung packs a huge battery in it without great battery life as you'd expect from the gigantic battery so they give you an option to buy a extra battery. Isn't that a clever way to make GS3 fans spend more money. Can we claim they are ripping their customers off as well because they force every single GS3 owner to buy a battery and SD card because it's an option just as a wire is only an option for us? And I don't remember anyone ever complaining when phones in the past had a different plug with every single model that came out while apple was using the same 30 pin connector that lasted close to 10 years.
Yes it is as far as numbers go. Doesn't mean it's inferior because tests have shown it to be the opposite. It has less cores than some, less ram than some, less Ghz than most. The numbers is all I was referring to compared to other flagship phones. Still outperforms in almost every way so it's impressive how the whole package comes together.
I don't know. Samsung has been able to convince millions to buy a 5" phablet as there primary phone.
Samsung exploited an unmet market segment. It astounds me that the largest company in the world can't design and release two different size phones per year, despite what the market is telling them. Yeah, yeah, one-handed thumb, schmum. 1. We don't all have the same size hands, 2. the bigger screen is a trade-off for two handed operation at times. A trade-off millions are obviously ready to make. There's more than one ergonomic factor in a design and some value the better viewing experience of their pics and other media over the Ives/Jobsian aesthetic.
Of course, now that iOS 6 is committed to the 16:9 UI thing, Apple may have ridden into a "letterbox" canyon and have a real developer problem if they ever decided they wanted to enter the segment, as a 4.8" screen in those proportions would either have to adopt other proportions or else be so tall it would stick out of pockets and just pop out of bras....

Why does your b's b-in-law desperately try to persuade people to buy a non-iPhone? I ask 'cos I got the same treatment at three separate Verizon Stores. Big time. And when questioned why the hard non-sell, all swore it's just because they think the droids are better devices. So it puzzles me. Is there a bigger commission on the sales floor? Lower device cost to the franchisee? Pressure from Sprint (which doesn't make a lick of sense, since they've committed to buying, what 15 million in three years whether they move them all or not anyway, and made the buy because it made the company seem still relevant)??
Anybody?? I just can't puzzle it out without more facts....

Solipsism X, meet v5v. You're both onto something here....

Android's hot around here - particularly the new Sammy.... ...I know I enjoy picking it up in stores and fiddling...
