I personally think that you are the one who is basing others' usage patterns on your own perspective and assumptions.

I have servers, iMacs, laptops, etc, and I think you do too.  We will strongly consider the iPad mini.  But not everyone is like you or me.  For many people, the iPad may be their main computing device.  Apple is trying to extend their reach with the iPad mini and lower price points.  These new users have a different usage pattern than you and me.

I'm not considering the iPad mini for my needs. I have an iPhone and 10" iPad. I doubt I'll be able to squeeze into my life anytime soon.

What I'm basing it on are people who don't post on AI. Not even people so much as companies that want to use tablets to be more productive but don't need a super expensive model with a huge amount of storage to run a simple app.

That is very reasonable.  But I'm a stockholder, and I want Apple to charge as much as possible for their products' "perceived" value.

I don't have an iPad 3 at the moment, so I might consider the iPad mini.

It sounds like you suggested you don't want an 8GB model at any price because you think it would make the iPad line look cheap. But you couldn't excuse the 8GB iPhone lineup. I think that 16GB is the likely minimum for this device category but I can see how 8GB would be enough for many people looking for a $199 tablet for simple needs.

    $100 for doubling NAND capacity; $130 for 4G LTE+GPS

The entry level price is also more than I had expected which makes me wonder if the A5 in the iPod Touch will be used or if I gauged the cost of that 163 PPI 1024x768 display properly or if they will use that display at all.

I disagree with the $100 charge for doubling capacity and $130 more for 4G.  People might not be so sure about the experience or quality, but they easily see it when it's numbers.  They know they are getting jacked.

Some people are screaming that $329 is too much.  Well, again, we don't know what exactly is the iPad mini.  These are rumors and leaks anyway.

They complain that $249 would have been an impulse buy.  Well, Apple doesn't want it to be an impulse buy.  Easy come, easy go.  Just price it a little higher so you will try to understand the premium quality and cherish the product a bit more.

If the iPad mini really starts at $329, I surely hope it has something new and special.

We also need to consider how many they can make because if this season they can only make 10 million and they know they can sell 10 million at $329 and up then there is little reason to drop the price to $249 or $199 if they can still sell all of them. You can be certain Apple has weighed such demand into their prices.

It's complicated.  The situation for the iPhone and the unseen iPad mini are different.

I guess I wasn't clear with the phrase "look bad."  I've always meant that an 8GB model at $250 would appear to be poor value compared to the Nexus 7.  It would "look bad" compared to Android devices.  Not look cheap.

Apple only needs to make sure that the iPad mini really beats the current competition.  Schiller should have done the research on perceived value, impulse-buy price range, and the customers' expectations.  Price it as high as possible.

I want them to keep high margins.  Don't price it below $299 whether it is 16GB, 8GB, or 4GB.  AT LEAST $299.  Again, my humble experience tells me that 16GB seems to be capacity where people have a neutral feeling of perceived value.  They feel it is all right or enough.

I agree that it's probably not the best action for Apple but I don't think that 8GB would in itself look bad if they offered the higher capacities for the competitive prices. Also remember that side-by-side the rumoured iPad mini will have nearly 50% more display area. For some they may say it's too big and go for the Android tablet but it also lets you do a lot more.

This is not not unlike the huge Android phones that have a significantly larger display. You can potentially do more on that larger display with the major differences being the OS, ecosystem and the difficulty with one-hand usage and pocketing the device. These are things that are less of an issue with a bona fide tablet over a phablet that isn't pocketable and only needs to be held comfortably in one hand for extended periods of time.

edit: If these prices are accurate I'm going to say white and black only. 16, 32, and 64 GB. 4G LTE, not just 3G. All that's a given with those prices, but I'll say that it'll still be 1024x768, not 2048x1536 or a new resolution or aspect ratio, and it'll still have an A5/32nm/512MB RAM ASIC that is in the new iPod Touch. I would also think it's using in-cell, but I wonder if Sharp's IGZO could make its debut.

Apple has dominated the full-sized tablet space.  But they are only entering the 5" to 7" (or 7.85", whatever) space now.  The brand name and iOS give them a few free points, but they still have to compete a little.

Again, uninformed, misinformed, average users would definitely think about the 32GB Nexus 7, compared to an 8GB iPad mini, if they are at the same price.  The Nexus 7 "looks like" better value.  Again, you and I may feel differently, but we are not in that group.

Apple wins in all areas vs. Android.  If it's just the capacity that they are complaining about, give it to them.  But don't start at $299 for 32GB... even if Apple could do it...  That is obviously unnecessary.

The iPad mini will be priced between the iPod touch 5th gen and the iPad 3.  That is the only way for it to make sense for regular joes.  The pricing would be simple to understand.  Small, medium, large.  I seriously do not believe they will price the iPad mini below $299.

I'm not sure what you were trying to say with the Samsung S3/Note vs. iPad mini talk.  Anyway, people do not really analyze or understand how they use stuff.  They don't even examine their lives very closely.  Apple haters might not even know why they hate Apple.  I don't mean that people outside of this forum are stupid or lacking.  They just don't think about this stuff because they concentrate in other areas of their lives.  Maybe they have children.  Maybe they have to take care of sick parents.  Maybe they are training for the Olympics.  Maybe they are touring with a band.  Maybe they have just lost their job.  Maybe they are busy with a part-time job, trying to save up money for a Christmas gift for their girlfriend.

And that is why Apple wins.  It just works.  For everyone.

I have been using Apples Maps for the last 3 weeks and it has been perfect. Just last week in a driving rain storm in Chicago in my dinky rental car the only thing I had was iMaps and it got me to my hotel as it should. I've been using this app in Chicago and rural areas nd every time it has delivered. It has worked much better than Google Maps for me. The voice commands have been perfect.

That would be nice. IMDb already has video games and pornos in their library so I don't know why haven't expanded to music (or at least music videos) and commercials.

OT: I find it interesting how unchallenged in the market IMDb has been over the years.

Ah...there already exists Gracenote which has both the CDDB data as well as track data.  Sony bought them a few years back and they have the largest music fingerprint database.  iTunes, Spotify and others use Gracenote's MusicID.
