So you truly think that Apple operates in a vaccum and that a) improved demand for smaller tablet devices wasn't a good signal for them to release a product that they've had waiting in the wings for some time? And b) they shouldn't react to new players in the market? If anyone is aware of the price umbrella in the iPad line it is Apple, they've simply timed their move for best impact.

Are they gonna start wearing suits now too?

I know what your point was, I was just hoping you'd be less obtuse. Or perhaps you just happen to swallow Apple's marketing whole and really are disappointed/bitter that they sometimes change their minds or do something different to what they might have said previously, even when it makes sense to do so. You're a black and white kind a person, huh?

There was a whole lot of mind changing at Apple today. They gave what the consumer wanted which was something SJ was against. I understand why they'd do what they did but at the same time surprised. Apple bought a whole bunch of suits today, and yes I am a black and white person.

This is bull, I just got an iPad 3 a few months ago and now they release this and mine won't work anymore.

What's that?  Mine still works just as well as it always has?  No that doesn't sound right.  What would I complain about?

By many reports, SJ changed his mind on things all the time, even about things he was vehemently for/against.

That it obviously wasn't good enough to last a year.

It's not mind changing that's the problem. Don't mock what others do and then go do the very same thing. Didn't you think it very odd that they'd showcase a competing product in their presentation? Are they so afraid of the Nexus 7 that they had to convince people why the iPad mini is better?

Mind changing not the problem? And yet you comment on the mind changing. That's odd. It's not like it's the first time Apple has mentioned a competitor at an event, now is it?

Joking about a competitor isn't the same thing.

Steve would never have joked about a competitor. Apple is doomed.

I'm a disappointed member of the Apple family.

No, but in introducing a new product Apple took the opportunity to move it's release of the entire iPad line to be prior to Christmas rather than shortly after. Whether this is a permanent move remains to be seen, but it makes sense. Regarding the "3" in particular, they took the opportunity to also switch to the Lightning connector, add more LTE capability, and I think we will see that the backlighting will have changed on the "4" to be a simpler/lighter design than the "3". Also, they could switch to their own ARM chip, which makes sense in terms of supply/inventory. None of these changes were necessary, but they were opportune. I don't see why people are complaining about a product being improved.

"Apple is doing exactly what many here mocked other manufacturers of doing."

How so? Are you referring to the smaller iPad or an early update for the larger iPad? The smaller iPad keeps to Apple's human interface guidelines re: the size of touch targets, so one does NOT have to file one's fingers down to use it. The interface is designed for tablet use, rather than simply being upscaled from a phone or shrunken to the point of being difficult to use.

There is nothing set in stone that Apple must release once per year. iPad 3 owners have no basis for complaint regarding the timing of this update - just as I who recently purchased a Slingbox Pro HD and a week later there was an announcement of new models for the first time in 4+ years. Some Apple stores are offering exchanges for recent purchasers, similar to those who buy macs within a short period before an update. If one feels particularly aggrieved to having the superseded model, there is eBay and they can buy a new one.

The real question (to me) is whether there have been any complaints about the iPad 3's performance (battery life, yes, but performance?)

In fairness, no one else seems to have digested it either -- all the news reports are about the iPad mini, no one even mentions the iPad 4 -- curious...

I assume the smart cover stays the same, although the new one for the ipad mini is a bit different. They did not say anything about a change in that.  I too wonder what happens to all of the ipad3's out there.....but for me I guess it is a moot point because I want the ipad4.

I know many are going to like the ipad mini, but it seems to me it is too small for my taste. I also know saying that is premature because like many Apple products, the "wow" factor comes when it is in your hands. I've not yet owned an ipad, so I cannot relate to those who say "it is too big" or "it is too heavy". Hopefully I'll be happy with my purchase. If not, one is never "stuck" with an Apple product.

I just hope the stuff you read about it getting too hot, etc will not occur with the new one.

The stuff about it getting too hot is not true of the old one, either. However, the retina display (which I love) is a battery hog, and the mini does not have it, so probably won't be. If you use the device intermittently, you will probably enjoy this aspect.

My ipad 3 is also doing fine too....   I am planning to keep it 2 years at least, so what if there is another one 6 months out instead of 1 year out...

I think a Mac Pro line running 128 core ARM processors would be way cool (or maybe just 32 4-core A6Xs) -- Apple's cost on those is close to zero, thanks to the iDevices.

What are you talking about? ipad 2 is the best model regardless of higher spec and retina display.  It's one of the finest model ever made.
