Wow. The dripping fanboyish enthusiasm of this article makes me think twice. I played with the iPad mini, the hardware design doesn't feel quite right and it doesn't ~really~ feel more tightly finished than the Nexus 7 (edit: my Nexus 7). As to the iPad mini display, it's just... sad that Apple released it like this.
All this griping about the lack of a Retina display is silly. Have you seen the mini? The display is actually very nice. The obsession some have with performance benchmarks is so mine-is-bigger-than-yours, especially when it comes to an iPad. What are you doing on it that ALWAYS requires the latest, greatest, and fastest chip?
Since the mini's A5 doesn't have to drive a Retina display, it's actually very snappy. I find it snappier than my third generation iPad (which I'm selling, btw, so that I can buy a mini). It's remarkably small and light, yet provides the complete iPad experience. The full size iPad now seems excessively bulky to me.
I thoroughly dismissed the idea of an iPad mini when rumors first started to circulate. When it was announced, I was impressed but dismissed it as the iPad for kids and ladies (purse size). As soon as I held one, however, I was sold. I might actually start reading magazines, etc. on the iPad mini since it's so light and easy to hold.

The Nexus 7 back has a good "grippy" feel to it without being tacky (as in taste, not stickiness).
The iPad mini, firstly the screen and edges don't seem proportional like Steve Jobs' Apple. Then, the iPad mini screen sits a bit "behind" the glass, not like the Retina iPads where the screen and the body is very "cohesive".
I just got Android 4.2 on the Nexus 7 and it's quite smooth. They've sorted out a ton of issues. The Sony Xperia S with 2.3.7, for example, very, very bad experience. But Android 4.1 has come out for that. I just need a PC to update it.
Don't get me wrong, I've owned Apple since blah blah blah... But the iPad mini? Just not feeling it this time. Even the iPhone 5 ~ most beautiful smartphone ever created. But the cut-up top and bottom edge glass just... doesn't seem ~right~.

My iPad 3 is loaned to a co-worker and it is awesome, but for simple home use as I'm learning more about the Android stuff, while to me, it's obviously a big rip-off of iOS, they've made some distinct improvements and had a number of original thoughts with it.
I think the iPad mini is okay for those who have not owned an iPad 3 or 4 before. To me I can never go back to a non-Retina iOS screen. Android is not so bad for me because I haven't owned a Retina Android tablet.
Just seems like a bit of a cop out under Tim Cook to just take 1024x768 and shrink it to 7". What about all the concerns of useability? The Stocks demo app in the Apple Stores has some very blurry text on iPad mini.
Of course, excluding Steve, Tim is doing no doubt an insanely good job under the circumstances. But that "special sauce" tastes a little different.

I appreciate your thoughts. But yah, FEEL is quite personal. There's no place for me to disagree with your feelings. I'm coming from more of the "majority rules" perspective. And while my opinion is still just rhetoric, the vast majority seem to prefer the look and feel of the iPad Mini ESPECIALLY after they play around with it.
In the end, I think the iOS platform is enough to convince almost ALL potential buyers...to decide on an iPad (or iPad Mini) versus the competition, albeit with minor flaws/preference.
It's great that Apple is going after the Kindle sized tablets, but they may be going in the wrong direction.
It's very possible Microsoft could beat Apple to the punch, and make the iPad look like a dinosaur. Don't believe me? Take a look at this.
Windows NT mobile apps can run on Window 8 desktop computers, which have 27" touch screens. Many Apps from the iPad are being ported to Windows NT, MorphWiz (a popular App for Musicians) is an App that's been ported and is spectacular on a 27" screen. On an iPad 4 you can play Solos on a small 10" screen, but with Windows 8 you can play Bass and Solo, plus chords!

Here's the same App on a 27" Windows computer… Uh Oh! For many musicians the improved screen real-estate is significant enough to boot the iPad off their purchasing list.
Don't get me wrong, I'm an Apple fanboy and Apple needs to step up fast and bring out a 27" iPad. I'm not saying they should make iOS Apps playable on OSX, but they need to come out with something bigger or they'll become irrelevant. Granted the PC has to be plugged in and the iPad has it's battery power, but imagine a 27 incher thats light, portable and a genuine iPad.
As a musician which would you choose?

A Publisher ? No contest.
Everyone knows Apple started the Tablet revolution that anyone can use, and we know they've been working on larger iPads, but the time has come to release them!
Now if only these could have multi-touch pressure sensitivity. Push harder on the screen to swell a trumpet chord or thicken brush strokes, but that's another story.
I think you make a very good point. I'd love to get my mom off her iMac. She loves her iPad, but still wants the big screen computer experience at home. Since I provide her with a lifetime of free tech support, I'd much rather she use an iPad all the time because she rarely has questions or problems. Not so with the iMac!
A large screen iPad with a nice keyboard dock would easily replace the Mac/PC for most casual users.
I've been saying it for years.... Take two 15" iPads, put a hinge between it... Voila! Full glass multitouch ~laptop~. That said, single-screen tablet from 12" up to 22" ~ sweet.

I have unlocked my phone on very very fast (about 6 hours total) and cheap, now i can update to any version without having to worry that my phone will be locked ever again.
