and I think you are confused that the surface is not a typical tablet, it does not use its usb to charge like a phone would, it has a separate charging point like all laptops and ultrabooks would.

And yes I think its kind of silly to place it in laptop mode on your lap.
Then it's not an ultrabook! I'm not in it for personal preference, I'm in it for physical possibility.
What makes you believe an ultrabook requires to be used on ones lap? This notion does not seem to be backed by anything other then the limitations of the past devices being so big that they limited one to be resting on something, and to distinguish themselves from a pc(requiring a table) that said hmm this can fit on a lap, so lets call it a laptop.
Im not sure about the 1st PC thing, yes they were one of the 1st but not the 1st, the first pc looking computer that I know of was my by xerox, the alto, in 73 3 years before the apple I(a hobbyist kit). but this isnt considered a household pc, the 1st household pc was i think the commodore in january of 77, followed a half year later by the apple II. soon after you had a race between commodore, ibm, and apple
the naming, mainly because apple realized to make sales they needed the reach the non enthusiasts, and they re-campaigned with the mac air etc and did the mac commercials and scored huge victory over windows in the coolness factor(im sure you remember those "Hi im a mac" commercials)
i think you missed my point, not to let the name dictate how you use a device.
the way to use a laptop is not on a lap but on a table, best way to use an ultrabook is not to hold it like a book but to use it on a table, touchpads were a big form factor change cause you could actually use it without resting it on something(holding them) I do not find anything usable on a lap, unless it is laying flat(tablet).you use your lap because the laptop is too heavy to hold in the air, so instead you hunch over and resemble the main character of hunch back of notre dame a bit too closely, while keeping your knees locked together and fearful if you remove your hands it tips forward and falls off.
