I'm tired of proprietary interfaces. This is not the 1980s. We need device agnostic setups.
Anyone should be able to get into any vehicle and have their smartphone of any make, be available on, and from, the car's touchscreen panel (as well as from steering wheel controls).
My guess is that this not what this is, but rather a scheme to use the Apple proprietary technology with the actual car (that is, have Siri integrated, maybe having the command console have a layout similar to the iOS home screen and so on). I agree that VW would be unwise to actually make their car work with the iPhone only.
