Ok. Mavericks is an great big gnarly wave in Northern California. It's known the world over by surfers, not just Californians. Its a dangerous incredible wave thats killed its share of surfers, something which likely keeps it hipster and troll free. I'm sure nobody needs to explain the wave wallpaper. This isn't a top gun analogy, it's not talking about multiple crazy people. Sure, its a California landmark, but whats wrong with pride in ones home ? How is this different than made in the USA or all of the civic pride people chant about their sports teams or car brands ? Sure complain about features you don't like, something with substance, instead of empty whining because they didn't give the OS your pet name.
I knew it wouldn't be anywhere near as big a deal to people as the whiners made out, simply because it took Apple twelve years to get it into OS X in the first place.
"Next big thing" items are great really for marketing, but I'm glad Apple's focusing on some core functionality with Mavericks because A LOT is screwed up. Glad to see OpenGL4 finally coming and better memory and cpu management all around.
Lots of other little and big things to set straight. Hope they'll make Quicktime X as functional as QT7 Pro is some day. iCloud's still a mess. I can't export an archive of all my Notes.
And Craig said that this would last them the next ten years too, so we can reasonably expect that each new version of OS X will be named after some California hipster hangout that the rest of the world isn't even aware of. I find this whole idea kind of offensive as I'm sure everyone outside of the USA will in time.
Something much more generic, that has resonance to more than just the folks at Apple and the hipsters of California would be more appropriate.
Get over yourself Gazoobee! If you are so offended that a California-based tech company has made an American or Californian reference in their product name then you should put your money where your mouth is and buy your technology from a company that is based in another country.
menu bars on every monitor! wow - that's innovation! Windows had this since, what, 1995?
better late than never. it does seem like the software atrophy that gave us OS X Vista (er) Lion is receding and a new era is coming.
Yeah, because Windows does it so much better by having the menubar attached to every window that is generated /s. This is such a fake argument, since Windpw's widowing schema is completely different than that of the Mac. Also, to suggest that 10.7 Lion was remotely similar to Vista is just being a troll. Troll had a lot of things going wrong for it. It caused a lot of issues which actually caused people to not upgrade at all. Lion, while it was not perfect, didn't have nearly the issues in compatability or use that Vista did.
Of course, they didn't mention a killswitch for the NSA monitoring...
Since when is Apple in charge of the U.S. Government? If that is the case, I need to write a letter to President Cook and have him actually doing some smarter things. /s It is remarks like this that make your opinion go from "just your opinion" to "uneducated troll".

They could have named it "Oxnard".
When they run out of California names, the can use things like:
Pahrump Nevada
Huachuca Arizona. -- pronounced. waa-CHOO-Ka -- or hoochie-kootchie
