I don't see what the point of this kind of design trickery.
It replicates the 3D shelves with gradients and squares, but the shelves are still there. If the shelves are still there, why not just let them be shelves? Why try to pretend that they aren't there when they obviously are?
I hated the old wooden shelves, but while these are more attractive, WHY DO WE NEED VIRTUAL SHELVES AT ALL?
Why not just a simple grid of book covers, just like iTunes grid of album covers? F*ck the shelves.
You have to remember that the iBooks app is not built into iOS. It is a separate download from the app store. This is likely temporary until they release the actual app in the app store. But I agree with you that current iBook app in iOS 7 is not impressive at all.
EDIT: I mixed up Newsstand with iBook app. My mistake. Thanks Tallest Skil.

Wow, those images do not look very pretty. I sure hope it's more appealing in person.
Steve Jobs didn't give certain people broad power, and he didn't force certain other people to leave the company -- maybe he had a reason.
It was a balance between form and function.
It's so freaking depressing to own Apple shares. Tanking sales of the flagship product. Reports of people jumping ship. Screen shots of iOS 7 that look, frankly, a little scary. And no whisper of any new product on the horizon that could create new growth.
What the heck?
How can the company that ushered in the PC era, and the tablet era, be in a free fall? And how, seemingly, can this have happened so quickly?
Correct me, please! I so want to be wrong. Thanks.
But it looks like wailers and whiners (and the guys who are too vain to buy or wear a pair of reading glasses) are out in force again.... I fully hope and expect that Apple will simply ignore them.
Personally, the more i use iOS 7, the more i dig the colours & changes, it visually pops, it give me a happy feeling .
Apple can't please everyone, I think the average user (wider public) will really like iOS 7s look & design.
if people hate the new keyboard so much, they can always go to android
I have never actually used news stand, so I really don't care how it looks now, its hiding in a folder now (Wooohooo we can do that now), a good enough reason in its self for iOS 7.
Sucks that i left an iPad at home (just got to work) can't test out the iPad version till tonight...
I think that's the inherent problem with digital UI. You have to reference something, because it's all just pixels anyway. How do you visually represent a series of digital publications in a GUI? you have to make them look like something familiar...otherwise you have various sized blobs or images with text in the middle. Oh, wait, that's Game Center. Apparently, not even Team Ives knows what games should look like. A magazine has to look like a magazine. A note has to look like a note. I love that the screen-cap for the notes App actually has the first entry titled "these are notes". Really? you have to tell your users what the hell it is because you've dumbed it down so far that it's just a bulleted piece of text now? Removing visual queues with text is the worst direction to take. If you have to make it a piece of text, you've failed. It's no longer a GUI. It's an instruction manual...and everyone knows nobody reads those. You have to create a series of glyphs or icons that are visually distinctive in such a way that in a split second you can glance down a immediately know what they are and what they do. Otherwise you've failed. What are they going to do in the German Version? Or the Chinese Version? Or any other foreign language where the text just doesn't fit the area they've designated for the tap target? when the text they've placed from the icons is too long to display in a single bar? If you have to explain in text what something does, you've failed in the GUI. Text should be supplemental information, not primary source.
They did that already and then the whiners came out and said it was stale and outdated. Well you now have your modern flat design so live with it.
I really dislike the new UI. Dark backgrounds with semi-translucent overlays is a terrible theme in my opinion. My vision is not perfect so I can imagine a lot of difficulty with the small text on various shades of gray and blotchy blurred colors, that have been shown on many of the leaked screen shots. For people who have some visual impairment it really harms their accessibility. Even in iOS 6 although you can change the font size it only changes some content in a few apps, nothing in the UI. It may be a modern style, and again just my opinion, but I think the functionality is significantly degraded by lack of legibility.
Sorry, I don't like most of it. Flat, dead-looking icons in garish colors. Eyeball grinder homescreen. But I hated the skeumorphism in find my iPhone so I am glad that is gone.

I was never one to whine that iOS 6 and earlier ever really looked dated at all. It was simple and user friendly. I never wanted them to flatten anything. Sure simplify some of the Skeuomorphic stuff, fine by me but never really had a problem with it before. Check some of my posts from about 6 months ago if you care enough. Personally, I thought the Skeuomophic stuff was what gave Apple OS' their personality. Friendly, intuitive and familiar. it needed very little explanation.

I agree. Perhaps it's my age (don't ask) but I find the visual clues much clearer and I can use the phone without glasses for much of the time, which I couldn't before. Initially I thought is was rather too simple but now it feels that a great deal of thought has gone into this.

Some of this nonsense cracks me up, man.
No silly we are talking about iOS here, put down that Microsoft device ...

Because it isn't, by any stretch of the imagination.
That sums up a lot of posts from you people these days.

Man these colors are well trippy!
The icons kind of look like the ones on my Nokia N9, actually the whole interface is very Meego's, digging the keyboard.
