Heh, I honestly doubt the slot-loading drive will be mounted in the front. That would make the unit a bit fat for an LCD based machine.
I think we'll see it on either the top or on the right or left side of the iMac. This way the drive would lay parallel and flat behind the LCD display, allowing for an overall sleeker enclosure.
I don't think that there will be as much of a border around teh edge. I also think that the studio displays themselves will be updated, 15, 17, 19, and of course 22(maybe 24?) with less area around the edges.
[quote] You are all overlooking one thing. What is the latest consumer product Apple has released? The iPod of course. I would look for the new iMac to resemble it more then anything else. That would mean adding lots of CHROME to the whitish/glossy/glassy look. Just my guess.

Good call! That's the best prediction I've seen yet for the next iMac. If done right, it would be way cool, and would look like NOTHING else on the market. Chrome has not been done for decades--it's time for Apple to give us a chrome iMac. How utterly cool in a retro sort of style.
What if the G5 were chrome as well....and shaped like a giant microphone! Doeh!!!
Wrong, Smirkle. Whatever they decide to do, you can bet there will be nothing "beige PC" about it. Apple's design over the past year has been nothing short of amazing.
I am getting really anxious to see this new machine. I have a feeling it is going to absolutely blow everybody away.
Actually, the Pro stuff did have colors during the days when the colors were popular. Did you forget about the B & W G3s?

Okay, I stand corrected...a brief flirtation with color on the blueberry G3 towers. Lasted from January 1999 to August, when the G4 was unveiled.
But I heard TONS of complaints (both from the Mac media/press as well as actual, real-life Mac users) that they didn't like it and that it made the machine look toyish.
The company I was working for at the time bought four of them and we all ended up putting them on the floor because we thought they looked kinda goofy.

I heard plenty of people say that too. The only place that I ever saw them on a desk or something in person was the school that I went to at the time.

I don't think the depth of a slot loading drive is going to be a problem. The thing is going to have to be about that deep anyway to have rear legs that are stable. If they make it TOO portable they hurt laptop sales anyway. Think curves, the whole case doesn't have to be thick but if you make it thicker near the optical drive you leave room for easy access ram slots, hard drive, ports, etc., without cramming everything in so tight it gets expensive (a portable or cube).
colors will remain. Colors are a part of what the iMac is. people buying the imac liked choosing the color. I have relatives that know nothing about computers yet always say they really wanted such and such color of the iMac.
it's grabs attention and personalizes a computer for people.

If colors are a part of the iMac then why do they only have one color left? And also in the Apple Stores you see one or two Indigo iMacs and one or two Graphites. The rest are Snow.

I imagine that if Apple takes the approach that is generally described here that the power supply will be similar to that used in the Cube. In that way, Steve can ensure fanless operation. The side-mounted slot CD/DVD is highly likely in my opinion. Apple has (almost) done this before in the education-only AIO G3 from 1997-98.

What the hell are you talking about? I own one of those AIOs and let me tell you:
1) They have a CRT
2) The optical drive is located on the front
3) The optical drive is tray loading
4) The power supply is internal
5) The AIO has one of the loudest fans I've ever heard.

Not to forget: boring as hell. Looks like beige PCs, just clear white.

I think that would definately look great.
it's grabs attention and personalizes a computer for people.
I mean, I don't consider blue, white and gray THAT much of a cool color choice.
Are you saying that the new iMacs will usher in a wider selection of colors? Or that the current three will remain?
It's not like 1-2 years ago when you actually had COLORS (orange, green, purple, etc.)
The fact that the iBook ditched the colors kinda signifies where the iMac is heading, style-wise.
To me, anyway.
Seems weird that they'd keep one iProduct colored and kill it on the other.

Ugly (what else is new from Gateway). The price is surprising since it's from them.

No 15" according to railheadesign.
17, 19, 22"
CD/DVD on right, ports on left (like iBook) Power in third leg to keep the front as thin as possible.
However, I imagine Apple will really do something completely different!
If the rumors that the new iMac will be similar to the 15 inch LCD are true... (a slight variation on above images):

That looks pretty sweet, good job
