Apple's iPad continues to dominate tablet usage, peaks in late evening

Despite a recent uptick in sales for Android-based tablets, Apple's iPad remains the most-used slate by an overwhelming margin, according to new data released Wednesday.

Chitika

At peak hours --?around 9:00 p.m. Eastern time --?tablets running Google's Android operating system are used less than 25 percent as much as the iPad, web and advertising analytics firm Chitika said in a study. Chitika analyzed tens of millions of tablet-based ad impressions in North America to come up with the numbers.

Microsoft's Surface brought up the rear at less than five percent of the iPad's peak, though the Redmond, Wash.-based company's nascent hardware platform does appear to be living up to its business-focused billing. The Surface clocked a higher share of its own daily usage during the work day as compared to the iPad and Android-based tablets.

Additionally, the iPad appears to be preferred by those using the device during their morning commute. iPad users "exhibit higher usage rates as compared to Android tablet users by several percentage points," the study says.

Though the study does not break down individual iPad models, recent data suggested that iPad buyers may have favored the full-size iPad Air and iPad 2 models slightly over the more compact iPad mini during the holiday season. Apple sold a record 27 million of the tablets over that time.

[Surface’s use line barely moves from straight]

Does my heart good to see the tyrant of the ‘90s detonating their on-site nuclear weapons.

All I see from this chart is that the Surface is barely used at all and that the iPad is used more than all Android tablets throughout the day except when comparing the early morning hours to Android's best time from 8pm to 10pm. In other words, the iPad is actually used while Android tables are still marginally used (Surface not used at all--don't bail them out saying they're used by corporate users).

And yet, we continue to have all the bs data that's thrown out there about tablet 'shipment shares'....

Well, investors look at shipments because this is what matters on revenu.  More usage could mean more $$ on content, but for Apple this is still a very low part of there income.

One stat I would like to see is usage for the Kindle fire tablets, Amazon entire business model is based on that and I am not so sure its working very well.

A hideous bloated software suite that should have died long ago, specifically word PowerPoint and outlook.

It calls into question the reliability of the shipment figures though. We either have to believe that lots of people are buying Android devices and not using them much or there's something wrong with the unit figures and both outcomes are bad for Android.

As far as overall units, the figure of 80% marketshare for Android is thrown around a lot as it makes Android fans happy clappy but it's not accurate. The total shipments of Android devices are only about 50% higher than iOS devices and we know that a significant portion is for 2.x devices but even in spite of that, these usage figures are still showing 1/4 the usage. That doesn't add up.

Samsung likely makes up the majority of the usage too, which makes things even worse. What exactly are the Android devices that are shipping in large numbers and why are people not bothering to use them online?

The iPad mini w/Retina began shipping almost a month after the iPad Air started shipping; the iPad 2 was already (and readily) available. When the retina mini started shipping it was also in short supply...

Wouldn't that be a reasonable explanation why there were more iPad Airs and iPad 2s sold than the new retina minis?

Yeah, if revenue mattered so much, Walmart should be the most valuable company in the world....

i think that most of the Android tablets only download games for children to play. Internet shopping or research is not the target use.

The numbers for the Surface are clearly inaccurate. Every single comment I've seen relate to the Surface is positive, and I find it hard to believe anyone who loves their tablet that much wouldn't use it all day. These numbers must have been pulled from demo units at retail stores
