Tesla voice commands are much more basic than Siri, which is probably a good thing, because it cuts down on ambiguity.
Boy is that an understatement!
Tesla Voice supports 3 commands. "Navigate [to a location]", "play [a song] and call [a number from your phone's address book]. There are variations like "dial" instead of call, but it can do only htose 3 things.
That may change in the future (Version 6.0?), but for now Siri is light years ahead of the Tesla Model S Voice system
Why does the prevailing logic include that the meeting between Tesla and Apple concerned Carplay? It could've easily focused on a joint venture related to the new battery plant Elon is interested in building. Obviously Apple would have an interest in ongoing battery technology and development partnerships.
Come on. They were talking about using Space-X to launch the iSat system in low earth orbit. Technology is in place to do the job for around Ten Billion dollars. Low earth solves the latency problem and it would take eighty-eight satellites. The final barrier between Apple and their customers would be taken down. Talk about a competitor take down.
Just look at that sucker! CarPlay needs to play in that sandbox too.
Interface designer tunnel vision.
That is not a desktop computer we're looking at. That's a free moving chunk of metal, hurling through space at 70MPH with a bunch of other free moving chunks of metal all around it.
With all the over illustrated crap on that screen, why do I need to actually touch AND then drag the virtual sunroof image itself? (after having navigated submenus to get there (!)
It's the most over-designed, indirect way of performing the most simplest of tasks, that I could imagine.
Edit: It actually does remind me of the silliness of the computer interface in "Minority Report" with data stored on futuristic "floppy disks" that have to carried from computer to computer. And you look at that and go "Whaaa? Are they serious?" Looks REALLY cool, but it's like they made it the way they did because it "looks" really, really futuristic, man! Like it's from a Sci-Fi movie. Therefore, let's go with that " src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />
Don't mean this as a pump for CarPlay. (What I've seen so far doesn't exactly blow me away), but Tesla's system is a clusterF...
It's basically 50% driving a car, and 50% screwing around with a computer (As it is, they might as well just get it over with and install a 27 inch display in there). Just way too much interfacing with a computer screen. Even to do the most simple direct task. Basically a car designed by computer geeks, rather than human interface designers.
If only Apple had bought these guys way back when. The Jonny Ive design sensibility would have brought these vehicles up to all that they really could be.
No idea where they will end up, but as it currently stands, they definitely seem to be much more into the Android aesthetic / philosophy.
And you have how much experience using a Tesla? I own a Model S and I find the current Tesla interface to be superior to the CarPlay UI. I don't know why I'm even commenting though since you're obviously the expert on all things Tesla.

I would prefer Siri to Tesla's current voice commands but I still prefer the current Model S UI over CarPlay.
The touch screen interface is fun to open the sunroof, but in practice you just use the right side scroll wheel (which also controls the temp, fan speed and more). Very intuitive but not as cool as the screen.
IMO, the whole carplay UI is a freaking rare misstep for Apple. Just total shame.
Where the f@ck did the "Eye-Free" concept go? There should be freaking NO visual interface between iOS and the driver. Everything should be voice enabled, from navigation up to a choice of a radio station.
P.S.
Actually, I almost get I what want already today without carplay just by connecting my iPhone to the Bluetooth system. The only thing that bothers me is having to long click the home button in my pocket to activate Siri. I would rather have a dedicated button on the steering wheel.
I DON'T THINK So !
They're Showin GOOD EXAMPLES for FoLlowing Manumacturers.
1. Volvo - NICE ! WeLl Done, Volvo. Good Implementation & Integration of CarPlay.
2. FerRari - Not Horrid, bur Not Impressive EITHER !
3. Mercedes - WORST ! I Totally Agree with THIS.
" Mercedes solution is ugly. It looks like someone bolted a $99 Android tablet on the dash. "
Not entirely accurate because there is bluetooth integration. Once connected you can play / pause and skip using the car's music controls.
Sorry, my statement was "entirely accurate". Bluetooth support is not "iPhone integration". I did not say there was not way to play any music.
iPhone integration includes selecting songs, playlist support, shuffle, album art (not some random picture they download which is wrong as often as it's right), etc. from the car's controls and or touch screen.
There will be some form of iPhone integration in a future software update, that is one of the cool things about the Model S, they get better with time. But right now, it has less iPhone integration than even the cheapest Kia.

I believe Siri can play songs you ask via Bluetooth connection, not sure about shuffle, but pretty much anything Siri can do, should work in a bluetooth enabled car.

My fault, I didn't realize you were talking about fully controlling the phone from the car.

Obviously you've never actually driven the Model S or used the UI for more than 5 minutes. If you did you would realize that everything you said is absurd and doesn't apply to the Model S.
I would prefer Siri to Tesla's current voice commands but I still prefer the current Model S UI over CarPlay.
To me Tesla UI looks ugly and confusing (the world barely knows this company) but you think it's better than iOS (plus Android) UI? the most used operating system in the world because more than 80% of Earth population are using it right now
Why can't you just be happy about Apple? or admit that this is great invention (they changed the world again) and this was a simple idea but nobody thought of that until Apple did
Tesla voice commands are much more basic than Siri, which is probably a good thing, because it cuts down on ambiguity.
Siri needs to get a lot better at complex tasks (or multitasking) before she is ready to assist with driver requests. In my experience she does not understand the word 'and'.
Example: Show me a map of Sam's house and send him a text that I am running late.
Siri brings up the map, but that is it. Even if I separate it into two requests, more than half the time she still doesn't know who 'him' refers to. I get so angry and frustrated sometimes trying to get her to do what I want that it is really unsuitable for use in a car in my opinion. I really need to keep calm while driving, not yelling at Siri telling her how useless she is!
Yeah i also get angry and frustrated while driving because i'm hungry and i yell at Siri to make me a Peanut butter sandwich AND with jelly but she never completes the order...she only gets the first part and i only get the peanut butter on my bread. VERY FRUSTRATING!

So far Carplay looks hideous. Tesla's interface is much better. No need for Tesla to downgrade.
"Just_Me" alright. You're dead wrong.

For some things maybe, but not for playing music from an iPhone. There is currently no iPhone integration support at all on the Tesla.

As for CarPlay being awful, as Steve would say "If people like it, they will buy it. If they don't ,then they won't ". Simple as that.
Funny to see Nissan on the list as in S Korea Many Nissan cars are sold under the Samsung brand.
Who cares? Tesla is a niche player in the automotive market. Why should Apple waste time trying to get them on board?
Well, but Ferrari...
