Lightning headphones could allow Apple to make slimmer iPhones by ditching 3.5mm headphone jack

Fair enough, Like many discussions about rumours, people just want to give their opinions & logically work things out & discuss them.

I don't know anyone on here that is always right about anything (including yourself), but its interesting reading people point of view.

No scenarios were made & apple has done this in the past & released adaptors months after the new devices have come out, lets not let facts get in the way of a good arrogant rant :)

Which was my point, it would be ludicrous.

its all about perspective, to you speculating about things is pointless.

maybe to a lot of other people out there, discussing tech rumours with people on the internet which infact changes nothing about what is going to happen is pointless, yet, here we are :)

OK Mr Pedantic, let me rephrase:  I'm concerned Apple will use size as an excuse to close down audio out.

To be pedantic his comment has to be about a minor detail, like if you referred to the smaller MBA is 11" and he corrected you by saying it's 11.6" when the context for that extra 0.6" didn't matter to your point. Your comment, "I'm suspicious of Apple's intensions […] an excuse," is not minor difference but quite large since this is only a rumour.

Personally, I think the possibly of the 3.5mm obsolescing is guaranteed. Maybe not this year or in 5 years, but it will eventually go away. At this point Apple is most likely to be the company that makes that sweeping change, but I think the best way to do it is to offer headphones that support it first as well offer an adapter, then eventually phase it out. I think Apple introducing headphones that don't use the 3.5mm jack and getting rid of the 3.5mm jack at the same time might not be the best move, even if they did offer an adapter in every box until such headphones were commonplace.

Note that I didn't specifically state that the 3.5mm jack would be replaced with Lightning. I think it's possible, although not most likely, that Apple would introduce a new, smaller and better headphone standard, like they did with mDP that was license-free.

They could just use the sub-mini 2.5mm audio jack and plug instead of the 3.5mm. Quite a few phones do/did.

The use of the 3.5mm was widely applauded for its compatibility when the iPhone was released. I can't imagine they'll take any decision to change it lightly, and a transition path will be on their roadmap.

It's interesting how many people are certain they know more about engineering and marketing than Apple.

    1) There is nothing preventing a simple adapter being used for 3.5mm headphones to work.

    2) In what way is the Lightning connector expensive? In what way has it not gained traction in the marketplace? It sounds like you're confusing Thunderbolt with Lightning.

    Very, very frightening!

Making new headphones will eventually make old headphones obsolete, and along with micro USB cables, older headphones can join the rapidly increasing non-biodegradable electronic waste.

Why not? The iPhone replaced our iPods, our phones, our cameras and our internet communication devices. If I can replace my razor too, so much the better.

But would it be enough for you to quit the platform? That’s all that matters. Lots of money to be made selling an adapter for $19. If the European Union gets its way with standardizing on Micro (or is it Mini) USB for charging mobile devices then there’ll have to be an adapter for that too.

What in the hell do you mean by saying Lightening has no traction in the marketplace? All iOS devices use it now. It’s an Apple proprietary connector. If you have an iOS device you will need a Lightening cable, period. And the Lightening audio will be digital and capable of a lot more than just two channel analog, low resolution sound. How about simulated, or real DD 5.1 on future Lightening headphones?

The EU needs to die like yesterday. What is the point of making Micro USB mandatory when almost of all of those adaptors will end up in landfill? What a huge waste of resources! Happily, there is a huge anti-EU movement taking place in most of Europe.

Me neither. What micro USB adaptors, and why will almost all of them end up in landfill?

There is a proposal to introduce legislation to force device manufacturers to include Micro USB compatibility. If passed, Apple would be required to provide adaptors for all the EU with new devices.

There are licensing fees for third-party accessory manufacturers, some of whom do not wish to pay to get access to the approved Lightning chip. So they create knockoff adapters without the Apple approved chip which leads to a pile of Lightning adapters that do not have full functionality (often in direct contrast to advertised capabilities) and thus low scores in product reviews (like Amazon.com).

I've purchased four inexpensive Lightning adapters from a nearby bricks-and-mortar store, all of which claimed both charging and data syncing compatibility. Only one worked, and it still throws an annoying "This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iPhone" notification every time I plug it in, even though it actually does work. The other three I returned.

Note that one cannot disable this alert message.

I'm confused. Surely you're not faulting Apple's lightning connector for you buying "four inexpensive Lightning adapters" (non-Apple type) that didn't work? ...:???: What am I missing here?

Exactly.  Stupidity for its own sake.

Only Apple would even consider doing something that damn stupid.

The only reason I think there's a good chance they won't is that fortunately they're about to be forced to put a micro USB jack on all of their phones in Europe instead of the proprietary Lightning connector.

With any luck, that'll be enough to keep Apple using the standard connector for the headphones too.

There's nothing fortunate about it. It's the most blinkered bit of legislation you could imagine. Europe needs to disappear, politically speaking. It was always a daft idea, seeing as it is made up of countries that are completely different in culture and language. Europe is a convenient geographical name, and a common market. Everything else can go. Brussels must sprout no more.

Yeah, this would be a terrible move, mostly because the lightening connector is not that physically secure. I've never had headphones accidentally fall out of a 3.5mm jack, but my iPhone's lightening cable loses its connection just about every time I charge my phone. It's annoying to wake up to find that my phone hasn't been charging all night, but would be totally unacceptable to have audio cutting in and out while listening to music or watching a movie.

That's good legislation. This keeps adapters from being unique to each brand or, worse, unique to each model. The bill allows for an attached PSU and cable to have a micro-USB that all devices can use or, as is the case with Apple for the last decade, use a PSU with a USB-A port which then allows the vendor to continue whatever port-interface on the device they desire.
