Hold down the Menu button for 2 seconds to return to the top menu (if not already there).
Then hold down the Play/Pause button for 2 seconds to sleep the device.
It's not perfect – you have to get back to the top menu. But it is workable, and you can do it without the screen being on.
The one thing to note is that you have to return to the top menu, and be below the icons at the very top (the row that shows new releases, or last played items on your computer etc). It won't sleep if you are on the top icons. Very annoying.
Ah.... that's what the problem was. And yes, annoying.
Yeah me neither. You just turn off your TV. The AppleTV automatically goes to sleep after a configurable time has elapsed if you're not playing anything.. No "power" button increases simplicity.
I am sure rules/values differ from one household to another, and are very subjective, but in mine, the kids have been taught from a young age to turn off/put to sleep all electric/electronic devices after use. No exceptions.
And also having the ability to search my library from the Apple TV via the keyboard on the remote app would be nice as well. Much quicker than manually searching through 800+ movies.
You can already do that. Once you are in the “computers” section on the remote app, there is a search button in the row of icons along the bottom of the screen.
The @TV interface has become more and more annoying to use.... it was cool seven years ago when first introduced, but it now looks pathetically dated. (For instance, I wish there was simple way to press and hold a button in the remote to turn the damn thing off.)
The main thing going for it is that it only costs $99.
I haven't read all the replies, but...
1) I believe there is a single key sleep mode. Play/Pause for five seconds? I haven't used it in a while. If memory serves, you need to be on the home screen to make it work. Shortcut to get there? Hold the menu button down in an app and it will exit to the home screen.
2) The Apple TV—at least recent models, not sure if this feature is relevant to iteration—will put itself to sleep after a period of inactivity. Hence this isn't something to battle with anyway. Just turn everything else off when you're done watching and go on with your day. When you want to watch again, press a button on the remote and it will wake from sleep. You can also manage it with a Logitech remote if it resides in an entertainment system governed by one.
There are some other innocuous (which is to say non-obvious and not introduced in use) shortcuts and features covered in some predictably named articles that might be recovered through a Google search.
I'm not a fan of Computers" being a button/channel. I have an iTunes Server that I always access with my Apple TV but I have to jump through extra steps to get there. Just let me put my iTS Movies and iTS TV Shows channels on the main page.
Will have to bail soon if no app store. Need store for app to watch Thai TV (subscription service) and go to Roku. AppleTV is mostly a glorified Netflix box for us.
Everyone KNOWS that it's just a matter of time before a major update is released, I wish they'd just get on with it.
- New "channels" are being added every 60-90 days - SJ talked about it as a next big thing - It finally got it's own Apple store category - Apple bought PrimeSense for some reason, not just because they had pocket change floating around - They stopped referring to it as a hobby - Everyone knows they were working with TWC when Comcast bought them - and now it's got a UI update
That they have huge plans for the AppleTV is maybe their worst kept secret ever and I'm getting tired of waiting.
There seems to be a lot of underestimating of how complicated solving the TV problem really is. Just having an app store isn't the only thing that having a future platform really entails. Long term and expensive agreements with rights holders determine the level of access we get. Google tried with their original approaches with Google TV to go past certain aspects of what is holding TV back and they failed because cable and satellite companies weren't having any of that. The new Google TV now is just a screen of apps, which is essentially where Apple TV is.
It is going to take a lot of work to really take TV to the next level and when you look at the strangle hold that cable, satellite and rights holders have, I wouldn't be surprised if it never gets solved. There is so much control and money at stake that it is so tough.

This works! (On any of the top menu icons except the top row, as you say. But even if on the top row, continuing to press and hold the Menu button takes you to one of the rows right below, and that, in turn suffices.). Thank you.

Pro tip: hold "menu" for two seconds to jump back to the home screen, tap down (to ensure the cursor is not on the top row) then hold "play/pause" for 2 seconds. boom.
It sounds convoluted but it's actually simple enough you can do it with the display off. It was one of the first things I learned to do with my Apple TV.

-Universal Search that goes across all apps (Like TiVo's)- and is accessible via typing or speech. TiVo's is the only streamer that has universal search, but there isn't a streamer with universal search via speech. This would be monumental.
-Safari (strictly for hotel/internet wifi connection)
-App Store with guidelines that include no content purchasing option and include integrated universal search if a media app.
I don't ask for much Apple.... I'm even fine with the UI if that other stuff happens. Sure- there are some annoyances, but I'm willing to look past your few flaws. I BEG OF YOU!!!

I guess you don't mind the 7 - 10 button presses typically needed to get it to sleep?
Holding the Pause/Play button for two seconds puts the Apple TV to sleep.
Edit: I have just seen your latest post. Which Gen ATV do you have? If it's 2 or 3, may be worth doing a software restore on it.

No, it does not. See Post #34 above.

Typical AppleTV power usage is between 1 and 2 watts when active.

Just like your posts.

With the updated background how do I turn on the parallax effect? /s
It's already on, you just have to shake your TV to really notice it.

Welcome to the 21st Century. Do you like it here?

It's not the icons that need any overhaul- it's the whole software OS.
Yes, because it's not just the UI that's shut but the entire OS right down to the OS X core and Darwin¡
