What happened here? I took two screen grabs, one before the ice dropped and one after. Here they are. Did they swap out the phones? Why would the time be different, and what happened to the background behind the top bar?

This is just despicable. Samsung has zero integrity whatsoever. Why anybody buys anything from them anymore is beyond me.
I beg to differ. Apple DOES take into consideration what people what and what people have repeatedly shown over the years is that they want the quality that only Apple brings to the table
There's that old Henry Ford quote, “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”
Most of Apple's breakthrough products aren't because of people asking for them, simply because they didn't exist yet.
I don't want Apple to listen to what some loudmouthed lunatics on the internet are yelling about from day to day. I want Apple to make the next device that the average person isn't even aware of yet. Screw the average person. Apple needs to be thinking far further ahead than what's on the mind of the average person on the street.
I don't believe that research groups or polling the public are good ideas at all. The public is generally dumb, and Apple just needs to do what they think is right.
When it comes to features, Apple pretty much does the opposite of what everybody else does, like Samsung. Apple doesn't cram every feature that they can get their hands on into their products, because you end up with a crappy mess of useless, gimmicky features, like Samsung likes to do, many of which don't work well, and bring the whole device down.
Everyone knows ice water sends people 34 minutes into the future.
GREAT SCOTT! That’s why the DeLorean was COLD when Doc touched it! The plutonium was just used to power a machine to condense the nitrogen in the air around the vehicle, thereby propelling it into the future using the sheer power of COLD!

I don't see that as despicable. I'm sure they do plenty of takes and then edit it. My disgust is the lack of attention to detail. If they want to be like Apple they need to start giving a shit about the little things.
Screenshot? Different devices for different takes?

It's pathetic. The water pour last a few seconds and Sammy couldn't get one phone to work for that long? There is no excuse.
If imore dot com can pour ice water over an iPhone in one shot, Sammy could do it as well.

Looks like the glass of ice water messed up the notification bar!

I agree it's pathetic, but not for the reasons you state. The S5 is water resistant, it's just a pain in the ass because you need to make sure the rubber grommet is secure on the micro-USB port whenever your done using it, which would be annoying.
Also, we're talking about water and ice here (and we're not even talking. The iPhone could easily do this for the few seconds it would take with any regular water source with a lot of conductive impurities as opposed to distilled water in a controlled environment. And I'm talking about a bucket of water, not the teacup Samsung used with what looks like fake ice. Was it even cold? Probably not since that wouldn't translate in the video so why bother.

Note the iPhone is not only being submerged but also going in 30-pin connector port first.

Why didn't they completely submerge the phone in ice water? Rene Ritchie wouldn't have been able to do that with an iPhone.
Never heard a samsung phone talk before. I have to agree with everyone that this is quite pathetic. Like they're imitating a bad 80's movie robot and adding an English accent to make it a bit more sophisticated. It really is an embarrassment.

I think that would have been an impressive commercial. Here's how I envision my first draft of their water resistance phone ad: The scene opens up to a bucket-looking bucket, but it's clear so you can see through it. Filled to the top with water save for a couple inches. Then at the water line there are 2-3 inches of ice floating toward the top. OPTION 1: You then drop the Samsung Galaxy S5 in a way that it's clearly in the bucket and submerged standing up, facing the camera (this might need many attempts or some special setup to get this right). OPTION 2: You drop the Samsung Galaxy S5 into the bucket where it lays flat with the display up (but you can only barely tell at this point). The bucket is then knocked over with the water and ice rushing toward the camera (Probably easily doable in be one take). OPTION 2-A: The phone slides out with the water so that the camera can be oriented to see the face on and working. OPTION 2-B: A person picks up the phone, gives a firm shake it to get the excess water off, and then... OPTION 2-B-X: …starts using it. OPTION 2-B-Y: …puts it in their pocket and walks off camera like it was no big deal.

3) I like the idea of the ad but I felt it felt flat. I think it needed a lot more water and for a lot longer to be effective.
Definitely. It's called the ice bucket challenge, not the glass of ice water challenge.

I think Samsung is hoping Siri will say,
"Oh, no! I can't do that!"
How can the top bar say 2:50 when the clock on the lock screen says 2:16? And why is the top bar transparent in the first photo but black in second?
Simple, Samsung faked the video and obviously hoped nobody would notice.

So are you ready to go out and buy a Samsung Galaxy now?
