Samsung's like the little spoiled brat who wants to steal the attention from his bigger, and much cooler brother. Stomping their feet up-and-down and waving their fists in the air screaming for everyone to "look at me, look at me."
I'm sure this is another "slap-it-together" product in anticipation of what Apple will do. Then after they see how it should really be done, they'll change it and claim they were first to market. In fact, it's probably awaiting final design after Sept 9 before going into production.
Btw, the phone looks thick. Much thicker than the leaked iPhone 5.5 inch. There's no way you can put a side screen on the iPhone 5.5 because it's so thin.
At least you can get a decent capacity battery in there.

That's how evolution via natural selection works, so I wouldn't knock it as a strategy too hard, it has been known to produce very effective results. Posters on here have accused Samsung of using that approach and of just being lucky in their success with large screened phones. The very strong likelihood that Apple is about to also release large screened phones can not be claimed to be because they were first with an obvious and brilliant idea, they are copying Samsung on this one and are therefore also the beneficiaries of the 'see what sticks' approach, if you hold to the idea that Samsung was just lucky rather than actually being smart.
Bit of dilemma for a few people, that one then - either seeing what sticks works, and is therefore smart, or Samsung were just smart.

Probably just some scratches, if it's concrete, or nothing much for anything else. The flexible displays Samsung have demonstrated previously have been very tough - they wont break if dropped judging by those demonstrated. The display would be wrapped over a rigid form to stop it bending further when pressed. I believe AI had an article on an Apple Patent for utilising a flexible OLED display bent over a rigid form.

"Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should."
Steve Jobs used to talk much on how Apple products are so great not just because of what they have built it to do, but also what they have said "no" to in terms of design and feature creep.
This looks like a products that has no idea why it exists.

It's a good concept but 1.it makes no since single sided, makes it ugly 2.people are worried about edge to edge, now around the edge is garenteed undesirable touch.

A rumor is just that. Patents don't always come to fruition. But smart to patent a good concept so others don't ruin a good thing.
But that rumor and associated patent makes sense. Samsungs Frankenstein does not.
A wraparound with selected touch areas similar to where current buttons are. That's could be a step forward. What we have seen today clearly is not.
And no way apple makes a mess like Samsung.
Can't wait to hear the accidental screen selection horror stories.
This is just samsung trying to be new or different. This is their purple haired Mohawk. Hey, if it's your thing, cool, but it's not going to really improve anything, to mention nothing about aesthetics. This is different. Not actually creating an excellent device.
It literally has no reason to exist like that.
One side is also because if it was both sided, it would be a nightmare to hold with a touchscreen getting unintended presses all the time.
It looks like a 90's device trying to be cool, yet failing.
And if Apple did a wraparound screen, no doubt there would be a true reason for it with unintended touches being solved. And likely... A true side view-as in an expansion of the parallax going on currently. Like you'd be looking at the side of the icon and the space underneath, which could present more info.
But really, this is a bad idea for numerous reasons, not the least of which is durability.
Not to mention, it doesn't appear from the picture to be a wraparound screen. Looks almost like two screens in close proximity. Could just be bad execution or purposed background graphics though.
And further a materials specification in search of a feature. They had a flexible screen they had to do something with: so they wrapped it over an edge and slapped some control icons there....
Samsung at least offered two models. If people prefer the wrap-around edge they have an option and if they don't also an option.
Here are the specs.
So, the new note is HEAVIER than the last year's model. Sure, not much heavier, but they're going in the wrong direction. It's not like the screen size got larger.
I can't help noticing in the side view that the camera "protrudes" from the back (which it will not on the iPhone 6). What do you want to bet there's no bitching and moaning about that?
I don't understand the use case that drove this specific design decision.
It feels like the hardware team had the technology to do it so they just did it then the software team had to make sense of it. The only function I can see that actually makes sense is the tool that allows you to use it as a lined ruler, but even then it still compares unfavourably against a 30c plastic ruler.
This is what Apple refers to when they talk about FOCUS being defined by the ideas they say "no" to as much as the ideas they say "yes" to.

Galaxy Note Edge: Designed for Right Handed People!
Well, I don't get it. What is the point?
As others have said, this seems like one of those things you do just because you can, not because it will actually accomplish something.
Don't get it - what's the point & benefit? What practical use that that 3mm of curved screen add?

Pathetic.

Being left-handed, this is of no use to me. Will stick to shopping at Flanders "Leftorium."
I could be wrong, but that's what it looks like.

You're really big brightly coloured text was very impressive, now put down the crayons, it's time for your afternoon nap.

LOL...or you can accept to do this:
Why? Because they can.
Another feature looking for a problem to solve, it's what happens when you substitute engineers in place of designers.
