To PixelDoc: you did indeed anticipate the keynote dropping out. For the record, so did I.

My experience of the live keynote:

Turned on about five minutes early. Live picture of auditorium. The sound was in two tracks of two different pieces of music, one slightly louder than the other. This got me worried, so I decided to refresh Safari (on an iMac). Then I got a static picture of coloured bars and a display screen of timings for the keynote accompanied by the same double music track. Help! Another refresh restored the live feed.

Keynote started. Everything was accompanied by a Chinese VoiceOver, which made for extremely irritating listening. Intro vid. Within a minute, picture froze. Refreshed Safari. Live feed back. This kept happening for about 30 minutes. I was typically refreshing between five seconds and one minute. The behaviour on refresh was varied and would result in any of the following:

    Restoration of the live feed.
    Live feed minus sound.
    The static display screen.
A rewind to the keynote from seconds or minutes earlier.
A Safari page but no video.
    An 'Access Denied' page.

At about 30 minutes, the Chinese woman mercifully stopped. The feed settled down and the gaps between freezing became longer. The freezing got worse again in the last third of the keynote.

Well, that was cathartic if nothing else.

Thanks for that detailed observation. Mine did almost the same thing across your listed points... albeit for only 2-3 seconds. At 23 minutes I just plain gave up, closed Safari, and concentrated on the Tweets and AI LiveBlog... and posting shitty remarks ;)

BTW: my remark against Kevin Lynch still stands. I had a few run-ins with the guy when he was at Macromedia years back over Freehand... and again later when he was at Adobe, also related to FreeHand. As Adobe CTO his arrogance became simply unbearable. Although I must say his arrogance-of-old was not on display so much at the Apple event... and if I could release the grudge I have against him... I might say it was actually OK and he did well (OK... I just said it!). I think he also may have gotten pounded down to size among all the talent at Apple... so maybe he's changed?

NOTE: [@]Benjamin Frost[/@] <--- it's best to use the @ symbol in the format bar to call attention to someone. Sometimes people don't subscribe to threads or come back, so they won't get a notification otherwise. Just a tip in case you didn't know that.

PS. You were doing some serious goading in a few of those mega-threads... hope you enjoyed yourself.... just sayin'... :smokey:

Edited: I don't know why I do this to myself... link to Kevin Lynch blog.... guy has a pretty decent history to be working on this project(!)... although I bet he still doesn't know jack sh*t about vector software or offset/flexo printing!!!!!

You’re in the US, or was it only a European phenomenon?

I'm stubborn, which is why I had to keep refreshing Safari. You were sensible.

I wrote a criticism of Kevin's presentation somewhere; I think you saw it. I would say that his arrogance displayed itself  in the keynote. I imagine that Jobs might often have been described as arrogant, and yet one never got that impression during the keynotes. He always retained such an almost innocent enthusiasm for his latest baby, which triumphed over any negative manifestations of over-confidence.

Thanks for the @ tip; I wasn't aware of that.

Were you referring to mega-threads about the Apple Watch? I think maybe you mean some of those with a lot of Crowley and mstone. The racism thread was the biggie. If I'm truthful, I would say that I enjoyed that thread a lot, and am grateful to the moderators (@Marvin @melgross) for not banning me. There's something about bouncing off an opponent that can be so delicious, particularly when the opponent gets so worked up. It's better when it's in good nature, of course, so I won't endeavour to make a habit of it.

I'm being dumb; how do you link to someone? Can't find the @ in the format bar.

    @Benjamin Frost

You just type the @ sign and begin the username immediately afterward.

So have I got Marvin and melgross's names wrong? They're not highlighted.

I searched for their usernames and copied their links. Having pasted them in, I see that the @ is still not highlighted, though their names do link to their profiles. What am I doing wrong?

The OP can't see function over form. On a device that small there's very little that can be reimagined design wise, especially with the current technological limitations.

Oops. Tut mir Leid. Das hatte nicht gesehen.

Apparently, there were problems in the US also, but maybe not of the same kind.

Thank You also for your reply. But I still think your mostly negative comments "across the board" regarding the products and event itself are full of "merde". Just sayin'... 1tongue.gif

Can anyone explain to me how the ?Watch is used as a fitness tracker? It does not have GPS connection, so as I understand you need to carry your iPhone alongside in your pocket. In that case I would not need the ?Watch. Am I right?

It has some sensors like accelerometer, gyro and barometer so it can track your relative movement but it won't know where you are in the world and probably can't calculate overall distance accurately. If you don't plan to be looking at the watch regularly to check heart rate or timing, the iPhone on its own will do the job just fine. Without the iPhone nearby, the watch will be almost useless for fitness tracking. They can always add GPS before launch though.

Not sure they can. GPS reception requires an antenna (because the signal is very weak) and I seriously doubt there is space enough in the device to fit one. It is one thing to receive a signal from mobile phone towers some hundreds meters away and cope with a signal coming from 40,000 km away or so.

;) - surely no need to apologize... my snark was also a bit too heavy(!)

I'm actually an American living and working here for 25 years come the 30th of September. Well actually... the first few weeks were only meant to be on vacation... but, you meet people, opportunities arise in the most unlikeliest of places... and then ya just... go for it!

The first time I heard the word here, naturally I'm going, "where?". Now I realize it's just all around me whether I see it or not. Didn't need to be raised on a farm either to "sniff it out" when ya read or hear it either :D

Cool. That’s great to hear about Americans who settle in Europe. We get so much stories pattering that ‘the US are so cool just every European with a minimum of balls should move over there’. It’s becoming cloying. You should have stopped in France though! :) (Didn't the Germans have a saying which goes like: “Leben wie Gott in Frankreich”?)

Common sense should be enough. But being used to it from infancy on helps withstanding it with a kind of English aloofness. “The drool of the toad does not stain the white dove”.

Unless there is a GPS antenna watch band that we haven't seen yet. ????

Yeah, I thought about that. But apart the stainless steel one… And then, it touches the skin all the way round. Remember iPhone 4 antennagate?

By the way, a relative just sent me this informative take on the watch from a watch blog: http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/hodinkee-apple-watch-review
