I was looking through the original story source website, and it doesn't look like a parody site ala The Onion.

Both Samsung and Apple pour considerable $$ into R&D and marketing. 3 years ago Steve Jobs mocked the larger screen android phones claiming that Apple had done considerable research on screen size and had determined that 3.5 inches was the the perfect size.... Tim Cook attacked Samsung's AMOLED displays for their overly saturated colors.

Now Apple is capitulating on both. Releasing larger phones not as an option for those that prefer larger screens but as a standard. NO SMALLER SCREEN OPTIONS AVAILABLE. The new watch uses a AMOLED display. A technology that would never have achieved maturity without very considerable R&D by Samsung.

As for marketing strategies... Samsung is definitely stealing Apple's strategy from its Mac vs. Pc ads.

Samsung innovation is as critical to Apple products as Apple innovation is to Samsung.

Several years back Jobs was very vocal on his opinion that after significant research Apple's 3.5 inch screen was the perfect size for a smartphone. That anything large would degrade the user experience. Cook maintained that AMOLED screens developed by Samsung were terrible screens.

Now Apple isn't even offering its customers a SMALLER form factor. Acknowledging their failure to keep pace with user demand. And probably most importantly they have included an AMOLED display in their new smart watch.

It is debatable as to what constitutes true innovation, but I think that most here would agree that the realization of flexible, bendable display technology that offers true to life color and pure blacks for infinite contrast is REAL innovation. For this gift everyone on this board can thank the hard working folks at Samsung display and Universal Display.
