    What “cut off”?

    Well if we go by AI articles, and many other articles, there are far too many devices out there that can not upgrade. Making anything near numbers mentioned in this article absolutly impossible.

    I know I rarely use Safari on either my 5S or Air, since most sites that I care about have their own dedicated apps that work better on a phone (especially) than Safari does.  They are written with that sort of device in mind, so interface is simplified, etc.

    There are still a significant number (several hundred) applications that make use of Audiobus and that are in wide use by iPad musicians that haven't been updated to use the Audiobus 2.1 SDK and which will not work with Audiobus with iOS 8. This includes apps by major players like Arturia and Korg.

    Again, as last time there was an iOS update, those who actually rely on iPads for serious music production will not be upgrading any time soon. I won't be touching iOS 8 until at least an 8.0.1 release, and maybe not even then if said apps have still not updated.

    There are no features in iOS 8 that are attractive to me as a musician using iPads.

    See the video below for more information. (Doug Woods has produced scores of tutorial videos for iPad musicians - check his complete youtube channel - thesoundtestroom - and makes a rare in-front-of-the-camera appearance here to speak to this issue).

    Additionally, some iPad musicians who accidentally updated to iOS 8 are seeking to take advantage of the short term ability to

    downgrade again to 7.1.2

    One bug with my iPhone 5 since upgrading to iOS8. Group messages no longer send in iMessage. I receive iMessages, but outgoings leave as texts. Other than that, it's been great. I really like the predictive keyboard. It seems to read my mind. My iPad 2 was unusable after the update until I did a forced restart. Now, it's just a little laggy sometimes.

The OS is by no means unusable but buggy enough I suggest to friends and family to hold off for the time being.

    There are some bugs, but it's definitely a million times better than iOS7, bug wise. iOS7.0 was absolutely horrendous, especially on an iPad.

    Oh yeah, the keyboard is an awesome addition.  Love it.

    1) connect to your computer and make a FULL manual backup;

    2) all iOS apps should be updated before hand and closed;

    3) erase the iOS device and set up as new;

    4) do the update to the new iOS version;

    5) restore from your apps and data from your computer.... and also back it up to your computer again at the end.

    I've done this now for a half dozen clients that will benefit immediately from iOS8... as well as my testing iPad 2. Working perfectly fine with scrolling, gestures as well as Safari, with 74 assorted photo apps and utilities here; and I have yet to hear a complaint from any of the other people with newer iOS devices.

    FACT: OTA updates should ONLY be done if you don't have a computer, and are only using an iOS device solo and with iCloud. Period.

    *** Anyone experiencing "odd" problems... should as @digitalclips already stated above: wipe and reinstall ASAP. Everyone else, when you have the time it's STILL a good idea to do a W-n-R every once in awhile. let's put it this way: it doesn't hurt anything.

    I am not doubting you but you realize I am sure, that only a very small percentage will actually do as you suggest. In the past when there was no alternative I had endless trouble updating and backing up through iTunes. Maybe I will do it now however. Not because of the frequent sudden re-boots (its only a few seconds and IOS is very good at returning to where it left off), and mysterious lags and loss of touch response, but because I now have 71 songs that cannot be deleted for love nor money. And amazingly, virtually every one of them belongs to my kids and is downright terrible. :(

    IOS 7 is so long ago I can hardly remember. It was stable when I upgraded to IOS 8 and in spite of IOS 8 being sketchy in some areas it is not a deal breaker. The crashes don't bother me so much and I know some apps that I use obviously need updating (Airfiles), The most annoying thing is when I find myself poking repeatedly at the screen for nothing to happen. This is why I won't recommend family members to update quite yet. There really is no hurry.

    So, to refocus... anyone out there who has already upgraded their 4S to iOS8?  How is it performing now?

    Me and it seems to be working fine with no obvious issues. i liked what I saw on my 'Air' so decided to go for it. I will probably be going for a 6 once supply has caught up so it was a gamble I was happy to take.

    I have a feeling that more than a few people are unable to do an update because they are trying to do it OTA and don't have the 5.8GB free.

    And it's been slightly buggy on my 5s, and rebooted itself 3x on my iPad 3.  The iPad is also now slowing down.  100% certain this is Apple's way of getting ppl like me to upgrade otherwise good hardware.

    You are 100% wrong.

    Your iPad 3 may have good hardware, but current generation devices are more than 4x faster. iOS is increasing in complexity along with processing speed. No reasonable person would expect their device to keep up with less than 25% of the processing power.

    Get your mind around how fast mobile devices are improving.

    Howso?  There are 54% of devices that haven't upgraded, and that's not including those that haven't connected to the store recently (which presumably skews to older OSs).  If 40% of devices can't run iOS8, well that just means that a lot of the devices that can have been upgraded, but not all, and certainly not an impossible amount.

    As I mentioned in the post you replied to, "you can't hurt or break anything... So why wouldn't you at least try it?".

    Also, I did put IDEAL in capitals for a reason, in that it's not necessary... oh yeah... unless you experience odd problems and crashing later. Then I would just strongly recommend it. A hard reset can also do the trick sometimes.

    I don't quite understand the repulsion to doing proven steps to a painless iOS or OSX upgrade for a clean experience until the next major upgrade. And if you're having problems with something so simple as a set it and forget it back-up using iTunes, then I can only guess that your OS installs are just as screwed up as your iOS ones. At least try repairing permissions, logging in new, and that you have enough space on your main system drive.

    *** just dawned on me you were the one having problems with OSX a couple of months back, right? Also you were offended then when from a distance some of us tried to help, stating your 30 years of Mac experience was worth more than ours, etc. etc. It was around the Yosemite Beta release IIRC, or?

    (I fear performance issues, since Apple didn't tout efficiency gains like last year; iOS7 definitely seemed faster than iOS6, on my 4S.)

    Yes, I ran mine while my 5 was at Apple getting a new battery courtesy of Apple. It worked perfectly all last week. I did totally wipe it and start from scratch and didn't bother adding any 3rd party apps as it was a temporary situation for me. But it woke flawlessly until my 5 came back yesterday both as a phone for calls and for data.

    Huge Apple fan, but I worry about this too.

    We have two 4Ss.  I was very disappointed with iOS7 since on iOS4, 5, and 6, the interface disappeared as Jony always said Apple products do.  Flawless, liquid, and invisible.

    But with iOS7 I became aware due to the OS-stutters and apps crashes.   Isn't that what we laugh at with Android?

    Now it's not getting some inputs, and is generally "haunted".

    iOS8 makes this bad behavior better, or worse?  It's sad to have to ask that about an Apple product.

    We'll get a pair of 6's in the coming months, but the 4S shouldn't be falling-apart, software-wise, but they are.

    See my reply above.

    I had a similar issue with deleting music and also downloaded music not staying on device properly. I found that having the show all music option on was causing problems. To delete those 71 songs, try going to settings, music, show all music, turn it off. Manually restart the iPad. Go back to music, select entry to delete by pressing down for a second and dragging left to get the delete option, press delete, should be gone for good. In my observation this speeds up the music app as well, since it's not always checking the cloud for your music.

    No, wrong guy. I have had Macs for a very long time but my ego is not inflated, I am not unduly arrogant, and I don't think my experience is worth more than anyone else's - far from it. Having said that I don't suffer fools easily and likewise prickish attitude. Generally, I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt. And I never had Yosemite beta installed.

    In the past plugging a device into the computer has been a convoluted process with mixed results. As I have mentioned before there are many devices in my house and it seems iTunes have gotten confused. I have lost back-ups, and I have restored iPods and IPhones only to have ended up with a mishmash of music and apps on the device. Maybe things are better now but I really prefer to manage my device directly if possible. In this case, where I am experiencing issues and I am stuck with a number of songs that refuse to be deleted, I will follow your advice and hopefully my digital life will get back on track. I have no problems with that.

    I updated my 4s OTA and it's been really slow and have had many crashes. But I believe I my case this things have happened because I have really used and abused the phone. Also most crashes occur when I'm third party apps like flipboard or even Facebook (both messenger and facebook's main app have been terrible since iOS 8.
    I'm about to do a factory restore and install ios 8 again to see if that fixes the problem.
    I also think it doesn't help that spring just began here in the south and we've had some crazy high temperatures for this time of year here in the south, so the phone has gotten really hot at times, it even prompt me to wait a few minutes before using it.
    Anyways, I think ios 8 should work fine on a 4s, we just shouldn't expect it to work as snappy as the new ones.
