I wonder if the iMac can drive a 2nd 4k display...

I'd like to be able to have a 'rotate' Dell style (I know, I'm going to hell...) monitor alongside it.  I want to be able to see A3 art at 'near' 200-300 dpi print.

    Lemon Bon Bon.

Huge win for AMD and Apple.

Apple has replaced and/or repaired my 2009 iMac screen no less than seven times to fix its streaked edges. I'll be selling it on eBay as soon I pick up my new 5K i7 iMac.  Apple's pricing couldn't be better and I expect the new iMac will attract new Windows adopters.

    Great value for the spec.

I'm impressed by the pricing. What used to be the high end is comparable to the new iMac.

I will watch these as wait a while before investing in this system. Definitely could use it.

So glad Apple is settling in on OpenCL 2.x GCN architecture from AMD.

So does this mean more iMac ipdates in the spring? Looks like no updates to the other iMacs.

Nice! If they can make an entire iMac computer with a 5K display for that price - why didn't they introduce a new Apple display without any of the PC gubbins for considerably less?

Because there isn't a connection standard fast enough yet to reliably drive that kind of display. TB2 doesn't cut it.

I would imagine the BTO 4GB AMD R9 M295X will be what you want. It's the one I'll end up selecting when I buy one.

And there are add-on chips to manage these displays on the Motherboard.

    Holy crap, CHEAP.

Remember when the 30” Cinema Display was released, it was $3,299. Alone. JUST A DISPLAY.

    The iMac is $2,499.

Well, this is one of those times I'm happy to admit I was wrong. I really didn't think they would go all the way to 5k. I just hope those mobile GPU's will drive this sufficiantly.

Both my wife and daughter want one, but I want to wait until Broadwell comes out. I think it will be a better match to the screen. Perhaps the newer Maxwell GPU's will be available for this by then.

I'm also surprised by the pricing.

What I don't remember now is whether the older models used IPS screens. I thought they did. This uses an Oxide TFT. I hope the color gamute will be at least as good. Many TFT screens can't put out a true 24 bit gamute.

I gotta see this display in the store first.

It's a shame that they havent integrated TouchID into the iMac somehow. I'm sure it would be possible to do it at least on the touchpad they sell. perhaps all that is coming next year if they do a refreshed keyboard with them built it in. It doesn't make sense to shout about how great TouchID is for security if the computers you sell don't enable it. It's the weakest link.

I'm guessing the smaller iMac will get a big refresh - with, say, about a 24 inch screen (or whatever the maths works out at) at the same pixel density equating to a 4K panel.

$2299 if you're eligible for the educational discount. Even better deal! Its practically steal IMO.

I'm also wondering how games are going to handle that resolution.

Technically it's only a $500 premium over the closest equivalent 27".  But there isn't a comparable model with the same processor and more video RAM (though I assume that's largely gobbled up by the bigger display).

I know it's been gone for a while now, but I still miss the optical drive. Not everything is available via the internet, can you say legacy software? Still like to burn DVDs for friends and family. I like to back-up my critical files (photos, music, financial) onto optical media - I've had multiple hard drives as back-up that have failed simultaneously. I totally understand why you'd want to get rid of the optical drive on a laptop, but I don't get why you need a desktop to be so thin. My desk has never complained about my computer being too heavy. And an external drive adds way more clutter than a 0.5" thicker iMac. I realize it's never coming back, but still lamenting the loss.

Just get the $69 drive and plug it in. Problem Solved. Nobody else wants or uses them anymore.

A bit of high-grade adhesive or tape would attach the external SuperDrive nicely to the back of your new iMac. Problem solved.
