Would people really use an iPad to pay at a register? That seems to me to be an extremely unlikely use case. And no it wouldn't get me to buy an iPad. The reason I'm buying one this year even though I have an Air is the screen and 2GB RAM.

Because they assume most people will have their iPhone on them, oh and if no one has figured out yet Apple really wants you to own an iPhone. :)

if they use a camera they will use an iPad. Apple shouldve known this. NFC antenna will be the most requested feature for next year. Apple knows they need to give people a reason to buy again

Your iPhone 5/5C/5S won't need to be gathered via BT for ?Pay to work with your ?Watch. The older iPhone will simply need to be used to set up ?Pay that will then transfer to the ?Watch to be stored in its secure element.

I'm not sure if this negotiation on those devices can be done without the ?Watch present or if those devices are simply acting essentially as wireless hubs save for some UI input from the ?Watch to your bank, nor am I sure if the ?Pay info on the iPhone 6 series (and newer iPhones) will simply be shared to your ?Watch or be new (I'm guessing the latter).

It's possible Apple will open up the newer iPads for that option but I can see why they want to make it an iPhone accessory over an iPad accessory; honestly, how many people can you imagine having an iPad and ?Watch but not owning and iPhone. My suggestion is to let Apple know as well as get others to rally behind you in a petition so they add that feature by the time the ?Watch launches.

I can see, after another few generation of iPhones, Apple coming out with a iPod Nano size device for the sole purpose of ApplePay. Even after a few more generation on iPhones, over 70% of the consumers will still own Android or MS phones. By this time it won't really be canibalizing iPhone sales. If ApplePay takes off and there's no comparable service offered for these non-iPhone owners, then Apple can can tap that market with a small pocket size, say $100 device, with a fingerprint reader, NFC chip and secure chip. It doesn't need carrier service. It doesn't need to take pictures or play music or have a GPS. It won't even need WiFi or Blue Tooth, as the CC info can be loaded in from iTunes on a computer. It could be a way to entice non iPhone owners to purchase an iPhone the next time around. Just like how the iPod (and iTunes) got many PC users interested in buying a Mac for their next computer.

Sorry but I think outside of, maybe, at Starbucks people aren't going to be using an iPad to pay for anything. When I'm at the grocery store or drug store I have my phone on me, not my iPad. I'd be curious to know how frequently someone has their iPad with them but not their phone. Oh and I think Apple spending so much time on the camera during the iPad keynote means they either are at a loss with where to take iPad or need help pulling together better keynotes. With such a powerful chip in the iPad the last thing I'd be talking about is the camera.

Sigh.

Yet another mistake by Apple.

Why shouldn't I be able to pay in store with an iPad? If I'm in a cafe, it's more of a hassle getting my iPhone out.

I know what you mean.

I was pretty upset when they didn't include NFC in the new Mac Pro.

What IS going on at Apple!

they never talk about ram. They talk about performance. That is what is important afterall. When a device makers device's performance is lousy they stress specs.

I'm disappointed Apple didn't include the NFC antennas in the iPad, not for making ?Pay payments, but for accepting them. I think that could have helped drive even more iPads used as registers, as well as boosted the number of places that accept ?Pay, which is something that will take longer with the Mom & Pop shops, as it is.

In before closed-minded people say its unnecessary.
OOPS! too late!

I agree completely and thought they were adding this feature. I was shocked they left it out especially since so many iPads are being used as a POS. If Apple wants to move this tech forward and have big chains adopt iPad, they need to move fast.
sparing users the embarrassment of carrying around a gigantic alternative to their credit card.
Yeah, because there's nothing embarrassing about waving the iPhone 6 Plus phablet around in lieu of their credit card ...

After 2 days using the iPad air 2, am very glad I upgraded from air. Screen and color much better, everything is snappier, sound louder and stronger bass, wonderful Touch ID. Only complaint i have is that it makes my iPhone 6 feels slow in comparison.

"more" unfortunately not all. Those few do look like complete dorks though....

Hmmm...iPad NFC payment and checkout??
Oh yes. "Four skinny lattes to go please and here...use my iPad as a tray"
There's a user case I see every day...so Apple...fail.

Maybe Apple will release external accessory for that POS.

I hope this's your sarcasm because if it's not, it sounds really dumb: more hassle to get your phone out than wave the iPad on NFC POS?

So why didn't they remove the mute switch from the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 BendPlus?

What's more, with Handoff, your iPad is now effectively your iPhone and in even more need of a physical mute switch to silence calls.

I rest my case.
Because you put the phone on your ear so mute button is convenient. You don't do that with your iPad. Btw, bendplus? Are you trolling? I've been putting iPhone 6 plus in my front jeans pocket when i sit down and rear pocket when i move around for weeks now, and No fkin.g way that the phone would bend...

Next year's 6SPlus will be less likely to bend. Trust me.
