Tim Cook's success is not proof that sexual orientation doesn't matter. Steve Jobs' success is not proof that college doesn't matter. Barack Obama's success is not proof that color doesn't matter. Helen Keller's success is not proof that sight and hearing do not matter.

You're intelligent enough to understand this, if you wish.

Stock's down this morning, likely because there are more than a few people nervous about the increasing change in direction Cook has been making, and given that he is evidently spending a fair amount of time on this (I doubt his letter was something he hammered out on his iPad at 2AM), it's not wrong to be concerned about the direction of Apple. I'm actually considering if now is the time to sell, I'll show a profit on the stock if I get out now.
Google's down almost 1%, Microsoft is down 1.5% and Facebook is down over 2% this morning. I doubt Apple stock being down has anything to do with Cook coming out.

Maybe he just sees Apple's role as what Steve always said he wanted Apple to be:   a company that changed the world.

And since Apple (under either Jobs or Cook) has never publicly endorsed a political candidate (AFAIK), I don't see how you can say that this is about politics.   Basic civil rights and well-being, whether we're talking about gays having the same rights everyone else has or trying not to further harm the environment here or elsewhere is not political, even though many try to make it out to be.

Nope.  Not even $75 million a year gives your employer the right to turn you into indentured labor where your whole life should be devoted to the company.

Yep. You can see it with the latest iPad release when Tim Cook asks what they can do to make the best tablet better and then proceeds to show off an image of the device getting 18% thinner.

I'm actually a bit sad about iPad. I think it's a fantastic product that could be so much more. I'd love to see a reimagine of iPad software. But iOS 8 is still unpolished enough that I'm sure all their time is spent on fixing bugs. Sigh. Here's hoping that next spring we see the next chapter for iPad. At some point it will be impossible to make it any thinner so then what?

The new iPad Air 2 is nearly a half pound lighter, in addition to being thinner. That's an important feature. I feel my iPad 3 is too heavy and I want the new one because it's lighter and faster.

You're forgetting about last year's Air.

It's almost exactly the same weight. They probably got rid of the mute switch in a desperate attempt to lose weight somewhere, so they could at least say that it was lighter on paper, even though the difference is tiny.

.4 would be HUGE since the Air (1) was at 1 lbs.

Yes, but I'm talking about the iPad 3, which I believe is 1.5 pounds.

Yeah, sure. Umm, just off the top of my head,

"Taking LSD was a profound experience, one of the most important things in my life." — Steve Jobs

That said, I see no more reason to be proud of being gay than of being left handed. But then it has been quite a while since left handed people have been treated as badly as have gay people.

Except Tim has been known to expect people's undivided devotion, be it that they work weekends and nights, or answer 3AM emails, or drop everything and go to China, and other things. That's not fair for him to demand that of lower employees and then not be as focused himself.

Tim's not being paid nearly $75 million per year to be a human being. His job is to be the relentless promoter of Apple, full stop.

There's an old technique used in interviews when the interviewee is asked something other than what they are promoting and they still manage to redirect the line of questioning to what they are selling/promoting.

Tim Cook is not important. Apple is important. He needs to keep the focus on Apple, always.

Exactly. Probably what bothers me most about this is it takes the focus off Apple and puts it on him. I've been watching CNBC this morning and that's pretty much all they're talking about. To be honest I wouldn't mind if we didn't see or hear from Cook for a while.

Surely his objective is that all people, no matter what their race colour or creed are just accepted as people. But all this shouting from the tree tops simply enforces the notion that Tim "is" different.

Despite being from a deeply religious household I was always taught tolerance of others and their views. I may not agree with someone's life choices, but if it doesn't affect me I'm more than happy for them to carry on.

You believe Tim's being paid to promote something other than Apple?

In the Stocks app, every single news story about AAPL is a story about Tim's annoucement. And it's going to be that way for some time. Now, future Apple stories will talk about "Apple CEO Tim Cook, who recently came out as gay,"

When it should be "Apple CEO Tim Cook" or "Apple CEO Tim Cook, who recently was recognized as a great Alabaman".

There was no speculation or media-fed "controversy" until Tim volunteered to the Bloomberg interview.

Exactly. And I'm sure all kinds of media outlets are after an interview with Cook now. Hopefully Apple says no and this is it from Cook for a while.

Consider the possibility that you think these things are distractions because your experiences, knowledge and capabilities are not those of Mr. Cook.

Tim Cook is a great CEO despite his sexual orientation. But, Apple is a "public" company and should not be used as a platform for his personal choices. I am surprised that Apple's board of director's would agree to allow him to use Apple's high profile status to spread his personal agenda. Current and future stock holder's might not agree with his personal choices. This subject matter could lead to the detriment of Apple's leading position in the tech world. Forget about Samsung, Google and Microsoft. Mr. Cook's "gay agenda" could negatively affect the stock price and the public's perception of Apple as a whole. Right or wrong, Mr. Cook's "personal life" should be kept personal.
