You missed the Sony reported huge loss due to difficult smartphone markets story...

Sony blames some of the new Asian manufacturers, and specifically well-spec'd but very affordable Chinese smartphones from Huawei and Xiaomi, for its difficult market. As such they're no longer going to play at the entry level. Instead they'll offer only premium devices and concentrate those more in Japan, Europe and the US. Taking a cue from Apple on what market to go after?

Million, upon million of Android users were just patiently waiting months and months for an iPhone rather than just go get an LG G3 for barely more than half the price of a 6?

    You are completely delusional.

Maybe not months but they sure were waiting did you not read all the articles in August that reported just that?

How about the record number of Samsung phones being traded in before iPhone 6's launch? just ask Gazelle.

If you read those articles and still need proof you're IN DENIAL.

I'm just saying there is no evidence or indication to back up such a claim.

And you won't find evidence because Samdung and all other iPhoney manufacturers don't release sales numbers.

Still waiting for them to do AppleTV right.

I have three and have had no cable for three years (well I do it's part of the HAO but we don't use it). We love Apple TV in our home. Netflix and iTunes are all we use. Can't remember what a TV ad or news look like ... :)

We did the same thing with the ChromeBox in our house, cable is dead.

Nicely written article focusing on the need to concentrate on bottom line profits rather than buying market share.

There's a world of difference between the good companies like Hewlett-Packard of old and Apple, and the evil companies like Google, Facebook and Samsung.  Can't wait for 30 January 2015 to see what the next quarter brings—or rather doesn't bring—for Samsung.

I have to say I am very impressed with what the likes of Xiaomi and Oppo have brought to the market. Normally I always gravitate towards a Nexus device for my Android needs, this time around though I'm thinking I might go with the Oppo R5, with only a 4.85mm thickness it's kind of intriguing. It's not as fast but to be honest most of these mobile cpu's nowadays are quick enough to do what I want too anyway.

This truly, in no way, has anything whatsoever to do with choice. If you are paying attention, you’d know this.

Funny how you moved form "Android-based phones" and extrapolated "smartphones" from it.
Funny how you moved from "absolutely no way" to defensive posturing.

Good. So anyone who claims to assert iphone dominance over android have no facts to back them up. In glad you agree.
And seriously, you are using gazelle trade ins as a market indicator? How much are they paying you to advertise?

Heh. What goes around comes around. For once, someone who stole intellectual property is getting their punishment in the market. About time.

The same thing will probably happen with their smart watches, although in that space Samsung has a bit of a head start. Apple seems to have a core base that will never buy Samsung (myself included) whereas Samsung's base is rather elastic. I have several reasons for not buying Samsung smartphones or anything smart* (partly because I have a huge iTunes library) but Samsung products practically fill my PC, including their SSDs which are far and away the best in the market. Samsung does steal intellectual property; their business model is historically founded on it and this is well documented. If their phone business went away tomorrow they'd still be a technology conglomerate with some best-in-class products in their portfolio, some of which I still buy. (Those SSDs!!! Their flat panels!) It's just nice to see that Apple didn't panic, took their time and smacked them in the jaw again. They *did* invent the space, after all. Job's purchase of a fabless microprocessor company didn't hurt much either.

One complaint I have about this piece: "adequate" 64-bit CPU? From what I' ve read, they're the best in the field. Where are you getting this from? Also, Apple was the *first* to release a 64-bit smartphone.

Gazelle are an Apple Insider 'partner'.  Their claim originated via AI and reads like an advertisment to me.  No numbers, of course, just percentages.  So a claim of "AppleInsider partner Gazelle, trade-ins of Samsung devices were up threefold on a weekly basis" tells you nothing except maybe 600 iOS users who had switched to a larger screened Samsung because of their eyesight were now switching back.

That isn't credible evidence to me.  What you call 'proof' looks like marketing BS to me.  When I see the iOS market share go up - worldwide - then I will give credence to these claims, but I doubt that is going to happen because it's all about the price, not so much the screen size or OS.

If those values don't change or go up then the iPhone 6 series can be said to be having a negative impact on large Android-based phone sales, but if it does go down and the smaller ranges for Android-based phones goes up we can infer that it's because of the iPhone 6 series, unless you want to make an argument as to why you think the iPhone 6 series will be ineffectual in months and quarters to come and what other factors have caused such a decline in large Android-based phones.

So just to be clear then you believe if the percentage of "Large" devices goes up it becomes proof that Apple's iPhone was ineffectual in stealing away Android handset sales?

That chart just does not say what you think it does Soli. Do you believe there's been a growing demand for "Large" display handsets this year? If you went solely by Google's distribution chart you wouldn't think so. Here's the one from March.

Gee, that same 7.7%, So the iPhone 6 and 6+ sales were already having an impact 6 months ago? :\

    Ceteris paribus, absolutely.

An example of this back in 2007 when I said that Blackberry née Research in Motion would probably started selling more "smartphones" for awhile as a result of the iPhone pulling that market segment out of the niche and novelty shadows.

With the current information given and the noted decline from Samsung I don't expect that happen. So if we do see an increase in the large category I have already stated that it would be sufficient evidence for me to say that 4.5+ Android-based phones are on the rise.

That just shows that the small device interest is declining in favor of normal-sized devices. It says nothing about large-sized devices.

TBH android users are already spoiled for choice when it comes to large screens. I don't see any compelling reason for an android large screen user to switch from one ecosystem to another jus because Apple now have large screens. Unless they were already Apple fans making do with android until Apple released a big phone.
Personally, I've had a mixture of devices over the years. This time I switched from a nexus 5 to an iPhone 6 for my main phone. I like the hardware (camera and touchid) the rest I could care less for with a slight preference for android as an OS. A lot of things were just so much easier with android but a lot of that could probably be attributed to being more familiar with android.
I could just as easily switch back for my next phone.

If people want bigger screen iPhone, they wait. It's not food that you can't wait when starving. Btw, LG G3 isn't iPhone 6+. Many of ny android friends go back to iPhone for 1 reason: big screen.
