With phones getting bigger and more powerful and computers getting smaller and more powerful, the iPad is put in a position where it isn't necessary anymore. I love my iPad and will probably always have one, but I use my iPhone 6 and MacBook Air 11" far more than I do the iPad.
The iPad will still be huge in education and enterprise, but Apple does need to do something to reinvigorate people's interest in the product. Whatever happened to the split screen we were supposed to get? We need features like that and that's a pretty basic request if you ask me.
I see the original Air as a bit disappointing, because Apple didn't bother to make an A7X chip for it, and it just uses the same chip that the iPhone 5 has.
The Air 2 is what the original Air should have been. I can understand why touch ID had to wait one year but the laminated display and 2GB RAM? Why wasn't that included in last years model?
I feel like it takes Apple a few generations for their devices to catch up with the breaking technology and software. This happened with the iPad retina display, the limited GPU processor and RAM made the graphics stutter, and especially with iOS 8, it gets bogged down. But the iPad Air 2 screams. I'm hearing similar stories with the iMac Retina 5k, and now this new iPad with a supersized screen may end up having the same fate. Always good to wait a few cycles of a new product so that they can be perfected.
WOW.... what an amazing prediction.... there will be sharp quarter-over-quarter drop in iPad sales following the HOLIDAY quarter. Who would of thunk it?
I don't think so. The big difference is the phablet requires a two year (our variations there of) cellular phone contract or paying a fortune for an unlocked device. That is why the iPad including the mini will be fine.
Yes, but people like to have their minds. blown. Incremental upgrades just don't cut it. People want a total mind blowing redesign. Something totally new and revolutionary. How you do that is another question. Drugs, perhaps?
Not me. I don't want my mind blown!" src="http://forums-files.appleinsider.com/images/smilies//lol.gif" />
I'll buy an iPad Pro 12.9" or whatever it's going to be called if they don't change things too much. I would just like a larger iPad and they can also make it more powerful. I don't want Apple to make a disgusting Surface like device. I definitely wouldn't buy one of those, no matter who makes it.

Only Apple knows the answer to that I guess, but Apple has so many products across different lines, that they have to prioritize what gets upgraded first and when.
Look at retina. It's pretty obvious that eventually all devices from Apple will have retina like displays, but the rollout has taken many years, and they're still not done yet.
People are much better off if they ignore all analysts.
But Ming-Chi Kuo has been right most of the times. Check out his prediction on 4.7" and 5.5" iPhone. I was laughing when I saw it and at 1080p resolution on 5.5" version because I thought Apple would never waste battery on something beyond retina.
If current iPad's are on a sales decline, it won't be too surprising. Neither the iPad Air 2 or the iPad Mini 3 were very good upgrades.
Not good upgrade if you go from Air or Mini 2, but for people with 4th generations or earlier on 9.7" iPad or iPad Mini. I would say no tablet out there can even come close to iPad Air 2 level.
The iPad Air 2 was not a mere spec bump, although the spec improvements were dramatic. The inclusion of Touch ID was a huge differentiator from previous versions.

I think that Rogifan went from an Air to an Air 2 and she can speak for herself, but I believe that she's pretty pleased, if I recall correctly.

Apple's raison d'être is to ALWAYS hold back and dangle the carrot so the naive and/or fanbot will buy over and over again- not there's anything wrong with that.
Exactly. And the Air 2 is proof that anyone who said iOS doesn't need 2GB RAM are full of shit. I rarely run into Safari tab reloads now. With the 1st gen Air it happened all the time.
Then why did you ever ever buy a 1st gen anything?

iPad air 2 not a good upgrade over the iPad air? are you on drugs?
Has a 3 core cpu, 8 core GPU, 2 gb of faster ram, Screen is laminated to the glass, anti glare coating makes it heck of alot easier to read under lights. Touch ID, apple pay and its thinner and lighter. What more do you want an f'in time machine???

Exactly. The way they engineered A8X chip that surprised a lot of people with its GPU performance. Somehow, Apple could engineer a unique 8 cluster design sticking 2 GX6450 PowerVR chips on the same die. Yup...Anand Tech confirmed it. The chip technology is 2-3 years ahead competitors, just unbelievable.

I think he should shove it back in.

YoY might be a better indicator.

So that thing I said was coming soon is now coming after soon at the earliest.
