A piece of computer software should control this?  I'd love to hear more about this idea of yours.

It's called licensing and version control, of which android doesn't seem to have. Now you have heard more about this, which is the first rule in The IT software world. Seems some of the comments on here about this subject wishing bad luck on folks buying equipment are from those who don't know anything about IT and are having fun with their equipment their parents have purchased for them...

People buy a *cheap* Android device because one or more of the following:

    - Don't like Apple products

    - Liked the attractive price (what snagged me 4 times to buy and have issues with all 4)

    - Like Android over iOS (don't ask me why)

    - Don't have the money for an iPad

    - Think the iPad is limited due to lack of VGA ports and whatnot

    - Mostly want something cheap for reading

Can you at least salvage these bottom-rung devices with a CryogenMod firmware load? Eliminate the malware and start fresh from a known firmware base? http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/index.php?title=Devices

Your brother in law sounds like a decent person!

It sure beats being a liberal prick!

    unfortunately illegal?
Please tell me this is just an act and your not that narrow minded and bigoted that you think discrimination on race, gender etc should be allowed but then again considering your posting history you must be that narrow minded.

    Let's get your logic straight.

It's not just about cheaper objects. It's about buying a cheaper object and expecting it to be exactly like the normal cost object.

If you buy a 5K monitor for, let's say, $2000 from Apple but somebody down the road wants to sell you the "exact same" monitor for $500... are you not suspicious.

You can't bullshit me... of course you are suspicious.

In my opinion the same goes for a $69 tablet. Somebody wants to tell me that it's just as safe, just as good as an iPad... I'm going tell him he's full of shit.

... but the same thing goes for that $69 tablet. If somebody down the road wants to sell me the exact same $69 tablet for $20... hey, I'm going to be doubly suspicious about that.

Buy the damn things for there intended purpose... content delivery only. Hell, my Wife and I won't even do online banking or other personal data intensive operations on an iPad, let alone some piece of shit $69 X brand tablet.

You get what you pay for...

You're not going to change my mind... but, please fire away.

I would say that it depends.

If I normally pay $50 for a steak dinner at a restaurant and one day I come across another place that I had never heard of before that is selling a steak dinner for $5.00, then I would obviously be extremely suspicious.

I would immediately think that there is some catch. Is the meat bad or expired? Does the restaurant have filthy, salmonella infected tables and counters, because they don't clean them? They're obviously not making any profit on selling a $5.00 steak dinner and it's only natural to assume that they're skimping costs in all areas, which could often include skimping on safety also.

I think that people buying any tablet which costs mere pocket change are asking for trouble, and I don't really care about what happens to those people as a result of their ignorant purchase.

I believe in true freedom, and a person should be allowed to decide for themselves who they wish to do business with for example, or who they hire.

And you can't BS us! No one is saying they are exact same HW, but no one expects a $500 monitor to in any way infect your system and steal your personal data.

Sorry, but what's the equivalence of being a Libertarian and a 'prick'?

I blame Apple for all of this. The iPad should have retailed for $1,000.00 out of the gate like all the pundits said it would. That way the competition could have margins that actually let them make a product that worked and still make a buck. This is Steve Jobs fault. :)

I disagree that the article is click bait; I found it informative and interesting.  In the coming weeks Apple will be facing a lot of mocking by advertisers and others for their pricing, given the availability of supposedly similar Android tablets. This article clearly conveys some of the reasons not to be lured by the cheap alternatives.  Much appreciated.

I don't understand Google. They could kill in the sub $250 market with tablets if they had some standards.

Google is doing great in the Chromebook (cheap PC) market. I don't think there are really any crappy Chromebooks out there and they start at $199.

It's baffling that there are so many crap tablets being allowed to ship.

You would think all of the crap tablets would stop selling after people wised up and stopped buying them, but it appears that there's more crap than ever.

Google could institute some good standards.

    Oh, well.

For those calling people ignorant that purchase these cheap products, they are wrong. These consumers are just misinformed or unaware. The truly ignorant are Android users beating the drum that Android is safe, and open is better.

Android is actually fairly secure if the user follows proper security protocols. As far as the open debate is concerned, that's a matter of opinion, some require structure and others to dictate to them how a device should be used. For a programmer, tinker, hacker, an open platform can be very awarding, I use an iPad for certain tasks but I couldn't imagine just having an iPad. Not to say it isn't good, it's very good but also has many barriers and is missing some traditional OS components that drive people like me crazy. I can make an Android device sit up, roll over, play dead but I've also been using the OS since the beginning and compile my own builds. There is no such thing as the perfect device so I like having the best of all worlds, which means owning devices that use iOS, Windows 8, Android, Linux, Sail OS and Chrome OS.

As an operating business do you ask some of those questions upfront before a purchase? If somehow I have made a purchase under false pretenses (i.e. the business did not know I was a Libertarian & they don't serve Libertarians) do I have to take what I purchased back to said business or be charged some sort of penalty when found out? You're posts are great comic relief & not based in reality.

Misinformed, unaware are the very definitions of ignorant. There are reviews all over the web, a person could easily find one of them for the device they are about to buy, even within Wal-Mart itself as I'm sure they have demo computers connected to the net, heck, head over to the magazine rack to check up on the newest version of Consumer Reports. A person buying something without knowing what it is that their buying is in wrong, not us commenting on their stupidly. I have absolutely no sympathy for this behavior. From buying a car to an electric toothbrush, I always read reviews or others opinions on forums before hand to see what it is that I'm contemplating purchasing. What's the point of all of these, reviews and consumer reports if people don't actually read them.
