And what does the rather nonexistent Tizen have to do with any of this?

I'm sure MS has no problem shoving bucketloads of cash at you to get one of their devices in your pocket.  It'll happen.

If there's anyone who thinks they can buy cool, it's Microsoft.

    In related news:

IDC announces that Glad Trash Bags now has 90% share in the bag market.  Louis Vutton only has 1%.

    Excellent comparison.

I still anticipate a quarter where Apple takes %100 of the profits. THAT would be hilarious!!!

Well, to homage "Catch-22", the others would make it up in volume....

I really don't see a come back. The name Microsoft probably isn't even known by most kids these days, it is a name like Pan Am or DeLorean Motor Co, only read in history books. The difference in those two cases is that those companies didn't suck.

    LOL, too funny.

I have to think that RedHotFuzz is right though when he wrote "If there's anyone who thinks they can buy cool, it's Microsoft." I mean ...they really believe it! :D

Seems odd. Didn't iPhone shatter records in 2014? Or was there really that many crap droids release at that time to overtake iPhone?

These are sales shares at each given year, not overall marketshare.

Apple has sold over 1 billion devices so far, Android activations haven't reached 2 billion yet but probably will later this year. The graph shown would make you think that there are over 5x as many Android devices as iOS but it's less than 2x. Even if you remove tablets, it's not as much as 5x difference for just smartphones.

Over time, this could end up being the case but it depends on the upgrade rates. Tim Cook said that only a small percentage (under 15%) of the existing iPhone userbase upgraded to the iPhone 6. Android users could be upgrading more often. How else would they get the latest software updates?

Curious to see how the Windows phone will do with Windows 10, but that won't  be out four awhile. It would be good to have a three horse race.

People are leaving Windows phone now because it doesn't have the apps they want. And if there are apps, they are sometimes/often inferior to Android/Apple versions.

It could be too late for Windows phone. Seems like they would need a miracle to pull it off. That, or find a way to heavily subsidize the phones.

I remember reading somewhere that even with Microsoft making Windows Phone 10 free to OEM's there's still no traction for the platform due to lack of consumer interest, lack of retailer push to move inventory (spiffs), and no app support from the developer community. What apps are out there are, like you said, severely lacking. And is it just me, or has anyone else here found the whole "Metro UI" concept of chopping off window titles until you scroll horizontally a HUGE UX no no?!

Steve Ballmer would never have allowed this to happen if he were still alive.

Nope, he'd just have bought entire sports leagues fleets of worthless tablets no one really wants, oh wait...

The incredible thing is that 90% of phones I see are smartphones. I send and receive messages to many people (ie. clients) and 90% are iMessages. It's clear that the vast majority of these Android #s are coming from prepaid low-end garbage in developing countries, so who gives a ****? This marketshare does not translate into usage, developer support, ecosystem, or revenue.

Have you noticed that whenever there are funny screenshots of text conversations, it's almost always from iOS?

Every kid that plays video games knows well about Microsoft.

For those who own Xbox or gaming PC, it is THE company.

For others, it is THAT dastardly enemy that would like to destroy their beloved platforms.

Famous or infamous, name is well known among kids. Probably better than Apple, really.

Sometimes, lack of reality among posters here is really amusing, if not slightly disturbing.

Meanwhile, on the Blackberry fansite it states "Blackberry, Android dominate market with 85% combined stake!"

The maker of this graph clearly doesn't know the difference between a smart phone and a $40 Alcatel feature phone that "runs" on Android but can't do anything but text and maybe get emails.

Maybe they should change their acronym to IDK.  For "I Don't Know."

I run into a lot of people at work who think MS is still the sh!t and Apple is still a fringe company that happens to sell phones and tablets. Their thinking is stuck in the past. They still do not think Apple computers can do much or are greatly limited.

Can't go wrong for buying HP? That's what they think.
