Apple iOS 8 distribution hits 77% as Google's Android remains bifurcated
Earlier this week, Apple released fresh statistics regarding iOS 8 distribution, showing 77 percent of devices run the latest version of its most recent operating system.
Apple on Monday revealed iOS 8 is now running on 77 percent of iPhones and iPads registered with the App Store, up five percent from early February. Last year's iOS 7 accounts for another 20 percent, while earlier versions make up the remaining 3 percent.
Apple's numbers are in stark comparison to Google's Android operating system. According to Google's developer webpage, 2013's Android 4.4 KitKat accounts for 40.9 percent of installs, while versions 4.1.x, 4.2.x and 4.3 Jelly Bean combine to take up another 42.6 percent. Distribution of Android's latest 5.0 Lollipop, released in 2014 and most recently updated this month, stands at only 3.3 percent.
Judging by this week's statistics, Apple's iOS 8 is steadily gaining ground after a brief period of stagnation in early October following the botched iOS 8.0.1 update that disabled cellular connectivity and Touch ID on then-new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets.
Most recently, Apple released iOS 8.2 on the same day as its "Spring Forward" event earlier this month, adding a new Apple Watch app for managing the upcoming wearable device. The update also addressed an SSL/TSL flaw dubbed"FREAK."

An iOS 8 breakdown would also be nice to see. I imagine there are more on 8.2 than on Kit Kat.
One huge one. Google has dropped support for the older one even though there are still new devices being sold with it.

How about the fact that not ONLY has Google dropped support for the versions of Android that now make up the VAST majority of users, but that those versions also suffer from SERIOUS security vulnerabilities that Google has now refused to patch!

Comparing 8.x to 4.1-4.4 doesn't seem to be fair. Why not just compare 8.x to 4.x?
Sure it is when you understand what an update consists of. Google doesn't follow conventions as far as versioning; major releases are based on API level. The version number is just that - a number. It doesn't really mean anything other than to signify progression.
If all you consider is that number, consider that OS X has been on version 10.x for 15 years now. Different companies use their own versioning system and they should never be compared to another company's system.

iOS 8.2 has been the best iOS release since iOS 7 was released. Battery life went thru the roof, system fluidity and stability are fantastic, and bugs are minimal.

iOS 8 is the most unstable OS I've had the misfortune to endure. It's the worst iOS that Apple have released.
Yosemite is a lot better. The Mac has the upper hand these days.

Only because we don’t have any active admins anymore. It’s actually a setting that can be flipped to allow users to do it themselves, but it would require a server restart.

We got those when [@]Tallest Skil[/@] was a mod, which I often times wish he still was. I don't know if any of the current ones would honor any such requests.

What hardware are you running it on? This is the first I've heard of battery usage improvement (but admittedly, I haven't researched heavily).
I've enjoyed iOS 8 from the start on my Air 2, but I've been hesitant to move away from iOS 7 on my 4S... which I still love so much, it's nearly real.
