Surprised at all the staunch support of 16 GB devices.

Just get a larger device then!

That's part of the master plan.

    $100 to go from 16 to 64
Another $100 to go from 64 to 128

So $200 for 112 GB ram.

Probably cost Apple $40 for that if even that much.

A reason they have 180B in the bank.

Going to eat my Wheaties now.

I doubt Gruber would risk asking something as to put Schiller in a difficult spot.

Why bite the hand the feeds you?

2 GB wouldn't have been on the roadmap for the iPad Air 1.

Obviously, it showed up on the roadmap and then as a product in the iPad Air 2.

    You made my point.

From you analysis it is clear that the 16GB version is the best deal.

So why grumble about the best deal?

This is the same thing as buying a car with ZERO options.  You are getting the best deal because options are radically overpriced.

The bottom line is those who buy the 64GB/128GB versions are subsidizing the 16GB buyers.

It is the "best deal". You just get next to zero storage.

So you expect all Apple products to be FUTURE PROOF for 2+ years?

The Air1 will be 2 years old when true split screen comes out.  Go upgrade if its that important.  Apple is not running a CHARITY.  They need to put in some incentives for users to upgrade.  By the way I own an Air1.

So it's OK for you to bitch about cloud storage/pricing but no one else can complain about on device storage or RAM?

One port was a brain-dead idea that likely appealed to Schiller and some others at Apple because it reduced costs, just like 16GB iPhones do. I predict both the single port and 16GB will be nixed later this year.

Android has had a schizophrenic relationship with SD cards, but the latest installment of Android allows one to combine SD cards with internal storage into one unified storage pool (http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/05/28/android-m-feature-spotlight-external-storage-can-be-adopted-as-true-internal-storage-or-accessed-normally-with-no-additional-apps/).

Lets say the 16GB iPhone cost $250 to make.

Lets say RAM costs $15 for 64GB and $20 for 128GB.

So Apple makes $400 in profit selling the 16GB.
So Apple makes $485 in profit selling the 64GB.
So Apple makes $580 in profit selling the 128GB.

So what phone is the best 'deal'?

    its the 16GB phone.

Stop bitching about the 16GB phone.  Apple is making the least amount of revenue, gross profit, and profit selling that phone.  The 16GB phone is the BEST DEAL, its a BARGAIN.  Is it for everyone?  Hell no.  But if you are not a heavy user it is great.

Bottom line is if the entry level phone is 32GB Apple would lose a substantial amount of users who would be willing to buy the 64GB.  Its a tight balancing act.  And where does it stop? Does Apple need to offer the 64GB next year as the lowest tier?  Than 128GB two years from now as the lowest tier?  This is the type of race to the bottom Apple's competitors are engaging in.  I'm happy Apple isn't doing this as a consumer and a stockholder.  The profits Apple makes allows them to invest in the OS, services, revolutionary hardware, and retaining the best talent.  Do you seriously think Apple could invest in things like the 64-bit chips, TouchID, ect if they did not make a profit?  Hell no.

Bottom line: You get what you pay for.

In the holiday quarter Apple made $18 BILLION in profit. No company has ever done that before, not even oil companies. Apple should be first and foremost about making the best products and providing the best user experience. Apple didn't seem to have any problem making most of its software free. I'll bet you any money the iPhone and iPad start at 32GB this year with 2GB RAM. What will you say then?

There are literally TENS OF MILLIONS of people who do just fine with 16 GB.

Again if you need added storage pay the extra $99 for 64 GB.

This is what pisses me off about the Google/Amazon culture.  Everyone things everything should be free.

Of course Apple wants you to upgrade.  Do you thing Apple is a CHARITY?  Do you think they are a non for profit organization?  Give me a break son.

And if Apple did make the low tier phone/tablet 32GB then the higher tiers would have to be more expensive to make up for the loss. Basically what is happening now is people who buy the 16GB versions are getting DISCOUNTS!  The gross margin on the 64GB and 128GB models are much higher than the 16GB.  The 16GB version is actually the BEST DEAL when you compare retail cost vs the cost to Apple.

Stop grumblling and pay the extra $99

    I apologize.

I did not realize you worked for Apple PR.

Yet another feature of Android that kills the OEM's...

BTW, HTC's stock is getting hammered.

Well HTC deserves it. Their latest flagship (the M9) reeks of poor product management.

No the design and specs of the machine do. With the way some people have complained about it you'd think that was the ONLY laptop Apple offers. It's not. If you need more ports and processing power, if you need MagSafe, get a rMBP. The 13" base model is the same price as the rMB and comes with the new force touch trackpad.

I would say that it is predictable, and likely on Apple's internal roadmap.

The lower cost version of any product always has limitations. It always amazes me when people buy on price and then have buyer's regret.

Do your research before you buy to make sure you get the version that suits your needs!

Blaming the company for selling a lower cost version that has limitations is ridiculous. These are the same people that would criticize the lack of a lower cost version if it wasn't offered.

    Technology changes.  Fast.

In 2013/2014 32GB/2GB RAM was not needed.  Maybe its needed in 2015.  Who knows what type of software/services Apple has in mind in 2015?  2016?

That's my point.  All you guys bitching about RAM don't have all the information.  Apple does.

And for a company that makes $18 Billion in 90 days you sure are critical of them.

I'm sorry but the experience on iPad even before Air 1 wasn't all that great, especially in Safari. More RAM would have made for a better product even if split view multitasking wasn't in the cards. This year Apple decided iOS 9 will be available to any device that was eligible for iOS 8. That means A5 devices will get iOS 9. If that is Apple's plan going forward making the hardware a bit more future proof would be nice so it can run the new software better. Apple shouldn't be skimping on hardware just to get people to upgrade. Yeah I get there will be new hardware features like Touch ID, NFC, better camera etc. Buy skimping on RAM seems less about a great product/UX and more about margins and profits.

Couldn't jut be the fact that maybe some can only afford the 16 GB model?

Some maybe can't justify the high cost for extra memory.

Its not just because they are satisfied with that amount.

I don't know why everyone is so hard on 16GB storage.

    It's brilliant market positioning.

Plenty of people will never use/need more than 16GB. No reason for Apple to incur excess component costs for people who won't appreciate it. My parents and siblings are good examples.

But many people will want 64GB, and feel like they're getting good value in stepping up to that model for only $100. My wife and I are in this category.

Great segmentation/bifurcation of the market place.

I have no problem with what PS said in the Q&A. I understand when I buy a rMP, it will have a specific use case. I also understand it is the first gen release of a brand new product, so it will be improved as time goes on. I don't expect a Toyota Corolla to go offroad or beat Toyota Supras down a track. I'm not that naive. If you need more power, purchase the correct "vehicle".

Secondly, I have no problem with a 16GB iPhone model. Obviously there is a large enough demand for the product and it provides more choice. Not a negative in my book. If you want more storage, pay for it. That's life.

Lastly, I enjoy great experiences on my iPhone 6+ with "only" 1GB RAM. This is not some clunky Android OS. iOS does not require more than 1GB RAM to run successfully. Would I like more RAM? Yes. By not having it is my user experience bad? No. Android users are spec warriors. They care NOTHING for user experience as far as priorities go. Please don't lose sight of the user experience and replace it with specs on a sheet of paper. iOS runs just fine with 1GB RAM. 2GB RAM it would run even better I imagine.

Too bad for you. It was a great interview and something Apple did not have to do. Schiller is a classy guy and it showed. Got a great reception from the crowd.

No, it was boring and complety predictable. I knew every answer he was going to make before he made it. I could of been up there and answered those questions the same way. Sometimes Apple's marketing strategy and message is a little stale and boring because you know exactly what it's going to be like. Not really surprised by Apple all that much any more.
