Or not. It's a completely different paradigm to what Apple has done. Apple is actually using the flexure of the cover glass as a driver for the capacitance.
Apple has rarely been about being first to market, its mostly about being best to market. Occasionally, they delay hurts them, but overall this has served them well.
Keyboards and styli existed before the Surface, so trolls relax - and the iPad and Surface devices served different markets. As Apple looks to expand into enterprise, the need for a keyboard and stylus becomes more plausible, so it makes sense to engineer and manufacturer them.
And remember, Apple did release an iOS keyboard with integrated dock early on (not a portable device however), and it was, and remains, unnecessary.
wrong, Samsung will have it in Galaxy S6 and S6Edge Edition version by the end of this year and fully incorporate it into GS7 in Feb 2016...yup.
Samsung will add some dumb checkmark on their packing. probably called D3 Touch. But Samsung's implementation will hack it together using the accelerometer to pick up small vibrations of your hand shaking when you press the thing, and then cry out "why, Dave why?" when you throw it against a wall.
Did Jobs specifically differentiate between stylus required vs. stylus optional in any quoted material, or are people just reinterpreting his words through hindsight after seeing today's announcements?
Yes. Besides he was talking about a phone with a 3.5" screen and not a tablet. They are not the same devices. He didn't rally against all styluses.

Wrong. About the iPad he said "if you see(notice he didn't say need) a stylus, they blew it"
Just wondering...can 3D touch be turned off in iOS 9? I think for some people, especially older people, it could be problematic. Also, I see a lot of younger people carrying around phones with cracked screens on otherwise still usable devices. The 3D touch depends on the glass bending (the concept of bendable glass still messes with my head a little) but for someone who doesn't have 100% control of their fingers anymore or someone with a cracked screen, this could be a real problem.
I'm listening to the ATP live podcast right now and the cynicism from the team, especially Marco Arment is over the top. Marco thinks the new ?Watch color options are a sign the product is failing and Apple is doing this to try and juice sales. He thinks the new iPad Pro is a confused product that's too big. Every comment from him is whine whine whine. Thankfully John Siracusa is a bit more optimistic. But damn it's annoying when someone pisses all over a product they haven't spent one second with.
Oh one tidbit as I was typing this...Casey Liss says he's heard the iPad Pro ships with 4GB RAM. If true that's awesome.
Sorry, but why are you so obsessed with what people say on podcasts? Literally all your posts is some constant regurgitation of what negative thing some asshat said on some podcast. Who cares? Arment has also been super bitchy against Apple lately, that seems to be his new "thing". Who cares how optimistic Siracusa is, and why are you so "thankful" that's the case? 99.99999% of the population have never heard of these people, and their opinions will have ZERO impact on the performance of these products. Stop pretending otherwise, it's tiring.

... and that will push them further away from the Android eco-system and further fragment that market. Only a matter of time before Samsung has to open their own store to provide apps for all their customizations ... ones that will make system upgrades even more impossible than current status. But hey, at least it gets people to buy new hardware every release ...
pinching and zoom and then clicking is a more complicated action than just clicking which a stylus would afford.
I don't know ... picking up my phone choosing a web browser and using pinching and zooming then clicking seems like a simpler action than picking up my phone, searching around for where I put my stylus down, picking up the stylus and then using it to navigate, but then maybe that is just me ...
I almost bought a Wacom tablet a couple weeks ago for my photoshop stuff. I hesitated and decided to wait to see what Apple does.
If that iPad Pro can function like one, I'm in.
That AppleTV is next. Been waiting to upgrade my 2nd-gen unit for ages. Glad I waited!
Bring on the new iMac!
Someone was noting the disappointment that Apple had not moved to a USB-C connector ... this for me is one of the reasons. I think it would have been cool to be able to use the iPad Pro with a stylus as an input (and extended display) device for a Mac desktop or laptop.
Do you think that maybe the limited number of countries for release is possibly to avoid copyright infringement issues? Not trying to troll, this is a serious question.
No, people are just using simple contextual logic.
I remember a lot of early Jobs demos where he indicated that his issue was having to reach for a stylus to be able to interact with the screen. It's important to remember that Apple had already gone through this once already before the iPhones when they released one of the original PDAs with a stylus ... the Newton.

I don't see that 3D touch is an integral part of the experience, as much as it is an extension. So those people with cracked screens should still have basic capability as exists now, but won't have the expanded 3D Touch experience.

No it's not. Read better.
If you used a Storm now you'd see there are similarities (context menus popping up when pressing etc).
The Apple version looks much more usable - I'm just saying that it's not a brand new invention.
Looks like BlackBerry had patents on a lot of the features which presumably Apple had to resolve prior to release:

He was referring playfully (and as a little reminder) to multi-touch, which Apple is famous for perfecting and bringing into the mainstream.

Samsung will find ways to copy this feature.

If not, then it should not be named "3D".
As mentioned earlier... 'misleading'.

Actually they had copied it before it was even announced... Or was it just that Apple was late to the party again.

That's funny. You used the wrong homonym. It should be "ad hominem."
HA HA.
