2) An East-West "Cold War" was predicted years earlier by Joseph Goebbels. He even coined the term "Iron Curtain". Do you honestly think it would have been sensible for one nation alone to have had atomic/nuclear weapons? What the Cambridge Four did was ensure MAD. That, alone, has probably accounted for their never having been deployed since. It must have been a great time for American's they could swap their fear of alien invasion by Martians for hysteria toward the Soviets. Hollywood stoked and fed avariciously off American paranoia.
