New Apple TV incompatible with Apple's own Remote app for iOS and watchOS

I think the real question that people are asking, is why one would have to use a physical ATV4 remote to control the ATV interface when I'm already holding a more than capable device (the iPhone) in my hand.

My experience with the previous generation Apple TV has been great (still using my 3rd gen until and if Apple releases a fix)  in navigating Netflix, HBO etc using the remote app, and Plex and others via airplay) etc. all from my phone.  At this point, with the new unit, one has to use the physical remote to navigate the apps on the ATV.  IMO this is a step backwards, since I'm forced to use two devices instead of one to accomplish the same goals.

Not trying to upset anybody, but lacking tvOS interface control from the iPhone is a step backwards.

Perhaps you had higher expectations. The new ATV is exactly what I thought it would be. Love it. Sure there are a few rough spots but these will be fixed fast as opposed to the audio issues with the Fire TV which are still awaiting resolution ( and I am talking 1st gen).

Apple has removed functionality that was there for almost a decade before. So you expected to lose functionality in order to gain App support and a Siri remote? Unfortunately you can't guarantee to anyone that this missing support is not a "feature" of the new ?TV. So waiting to see how it develops is not a bad strategy, and not buying it, or returning it, is an excellent way to let Apple know it's not acceptable.

Frankly I have no problems with my ?TV 2 as is. So I'm also gonna wait and see if there any apps worth upgrading for. Are there some features involving Siri I'd like to have? Sure, but in general I see the overall experience as taking a step back from what I have now. So yeah, I'm gonna see how it plays out before I upgrade.

Oh, do shut up. The boring "Apple has gone downhill" meme got boring 5 min after Steve left, and not a SINGLE metric supports your trollish, trashy statement. How original of you. If you recall, under Steve the first Apple TV also had a remote, albeit an ugly plastic white one. Nothing is "unfolding". Any rational person can predict that the app will get updated in short order. This Apple TV is a MASSIVE improvement from the previous version, from the appstore, to the performance, to the UI, to the functionality, to the remote. The potential is huge, yet you're stuck on the iPhone app that most people didn't even use. Over-promise? What did Apple promise you, exactly? I'd LOVE to know.

So tired to trolls like you with your tired, drawn-out memes. At least you started out with "Steve Jobs would have never.." (what a nauseatingly presumptuous, self-righteous, and entitled statement) so most people would know not to read the rest. Nobody cares if you don't buy this product, especially not Apple, and they owe you nothing. Others (like myself) are greatly enjoying this new product, and millions more will. Stop dragging SJ out of the grave whenever you have a bone to pick. It's classless.

Steve Jobs never would have allowed the Royals to take a 7-2 lead in extra innings!

What loss of functionality are you talking about? The remote app is being updated and the BT keyboard issue is very temporary.

Unless you have a jailbroken ATV2 the new ATV is way more functional, even now.

In a couple of weeks it will be interesting to revisit many of the issues raised. For now, a lot of people are just whining for no good reason (not talking about you!)... It's a $150 item, not a Lear jet.

    Well, okay, no optical out.

Steve Jobs would NEVER have tolerated the removal of ports with duplicate functionality! EVAR!!!

The website and instructions that come in the box fail to mention that a charger is necessary and what are its requirements.

I talked with the Apple Store manager and was rewarded with a charger. :-)

So Apple is selling a product with a rechargeable remote, but there is no way to charge said remote with the equipment you get in the box?! Insane. Heads really should roll over this rollout. Details, people. Details!

And when/if those issues are resolved, the complainers may buy one again. Is there _any_ official statement supporting your assertion that these issues will be fixed? If not, it's purely wishful thinking.

Here's a first impressions review from a gaming oriented site. Summary: "I badly wish Apple had gone just one small step further with a lot of this stuff... The good news is, all the major flaws can be fixed with software updates and Apple policy changes... It's just a matter of waiting around to see if either of those things happen."

So when/if those changes happen, the pickier consumers will be back with their hard earned dollars.

I honestly tried to like the ATV4 I bought on Friday, but after a weekend of nothing but frustration and disappointment, it is going back this evening. It's simply too incomplete, too frustrating to use, and too much of a step backward from my ATV3s. It feels more like an unfinished science fair project - very un-Apple-like. The way I see it, I paid $200 for a device that is barely worth $50 to me. I don't want to gamble with the difference simply hoping that Apple will right their wrongs after my return privilege has expired. I've returned/exchanged a few Apple purchases over the years, but this is the first Apple return I'll be making because a product is truly a downgrade for me from what I had.

Mine arrives tomorrow and I already made the decision to return to Apple unopened based on the reviews I've read through the weekend. Primarily, no Siri search for Home Sharing, which is how use my device nearly 100% of the time means that it's just going to be hell to set up (until the iOS Remote app is updated) and have no real benefit. I honestly don't care about the 3rd-party apps at this point, except for Plex, providing their tvOS app will support Siri search when connected locally to my Mac mini running the Plex server.

Thank you. The real question is why would Apple remove the functionality in the first place, then release the product without it when they could have easily waited a little longer and still have cleaned up for Black Friday Christmas sales. Unless these alleged "fixes" aren't coming by the end of November, and if not, when?

In the mean time, defend Apple to the teeth -- it's not Apples problem they removed functionality that's been there for almost a decade, making the customers experience inferior to what its been for the last two generation releases -- it's evidently the customers problem for not being patient with Apple while they get their act together. Love this forum!

Finally, a legitimate point. The lack of a charger for a remote that requires charging is really bad. I totally agree with you on this.

Nobody who owns an Apple TV doesn't also have a computer that can charge this thing via USB.

Everyone who pays $149–199 for an Apple TV also has a way to charge via USB-A every couple months.

Wait, it doesn’t come with a USB cable? Honestly, Apple, this trend needs to stop.

First-gen iPhone came with a wall charger, cable, headphones, dock, etc. And what now? $40 extra for a dock whose construction I don’t trust (mainly because I’ve yet to try one out in an Apple Store). What came in the Apple Watch box? What of that will be removed by the next generation? The MacBook Pro (not sure about MacBook) used to come with a DVI-VGA dongle. Nothing now.

I miss the days where the ecosystem was prepackaged. Now it’s nickel and dimed.

It certainly does come with a USB-A-to-Lightning cable.
