Nobody who owns an Apple TV doesn't also have a computer that can charge this thing via USB.
A lot of people don't have computers. Many have just an iPhone or iPad or Android or whatever. You can't assume that people have computers. It's not a requirement for using the Apple TV or is it? If it isn't then supply the charger.
It certainly does come with a USB-A-to-Lightning cable.

Well it comes with the cable but there's no way of using the cable unless you have a computer or a charger which is not included. I would have thought a charger would be included since the remote can't be used without charging and you can't assume everyone has a computer.
1- can't enter your passwords ( the remote is there and it takes a few minutes with it)
2- doesn't support 4K ( that one takes the cake. It also doesn't have HDMI 2.2 and neither do most 4K TV's)
3- the Roku 4 is better ( have a look at the reviews)
4- the Fire TV is better ( even worse than the Roku 4)
5- no optical out ( also no composite)
4- requires a computer to charge the remote ( I do see this as a reasonable criticism)
5- less functionality than an Apple TV 2 ( I still can't understand that one. It also doesn't do things the Apple TV 1 did. The Apple TV 2, TV3 have no App store which is the major addition)
6- doesn't index my home ripped collection ( it is a streamer not a local player)
7- doesn't run Kodi, native mkv, native avi, native divx, etc... ( get an unofficial Android TV from China)
8- the old Apple remote app doesn't work ( many people have said it is being updated to work. Also, my Harmony Smart Control remote worked out of the box)
One would think the world has fallen apart because the Apple TV doesn't print money. I guess there will be refurbs in the Apple store which is really great from my perspective.
Apart from the charging issue for the remote, which is a debatable omission, the new Apple TV is great. Almost all the reviews are positive, it comes with 32gigs of static RAM which is fantastic ( The Fire TV comes with 8), AirPlay works great and should satisfy those who need a browser on their TV, the App store is a fantastic addition, force quit works in a similar way to the iPhone ( in fact the unit works in many ways like an iDevice with the very neat remote), picture quality is excellent, Netflix, Hulu, iTunes stream perfectly, simpleX is a nice Plex client ( the official PleX client is coming).
Seems to me that AI is a magnet for folks with very little patience or perhaps those who never wanted an Apple product in the first place. To compare this to the Maps incident is just crazy.

Yes, you absolutely can assume that those buying a new Apple TV have a USB-A 2.0+ port in their home. Hell, even automobiles have powered USB-A ports in them these days. If, you are claiming to be one of these people that have no smartphone, no tablet, no eReader, no "PC", or anything else that comes with this common PSU then go buy a fucking PSU or ask someone if you can have one of their PSUs from their drawer or box full of old PSUs with USB-A ports for that one-hour every 2-months charging requirement.

Holy shit! That's a shitload of stupid shit. You're actually whining about the lack of composite cables, (not even component, but composite!), and no AVI container and DivX codec support on a device released in Late-2015. Did you just wake up from a decade long coma?¡
...there’s no way of using the cable unless you have a computer or a charger which is not included.
Yeah, I don’t like that. The iPod touch has done that for quite a few generations now (though it and the iPods not having wall chargers makes a tiny bit more sense, as their use is mostly predicated on the ownership of a computer).

But you think a $150–200 Apple TV is going to be the first Apple kit or even 21st century computing device that customers will own, thus making them have no USB-A port in which to use for one-hour, once every 2-months? If that's the case, then they buy a damn wall charger if they also know anyone, which is synonymous with not knowing anyone that doesn't have a drawer or box full of them.
But you think a $150–200 Apple TV is going to be the first Apple kit or even 21st century computing device that customers will own...
Oh, I doubt it. We just have examples of a time when Apple made these questions irrelevant, and so discussion can be had on why they’d decide to stop. I’d love it if they did so again, but it’s no skin off my back, as long as my product purchase cycle is; others are more offended.
Have either of you considered it would not be unusual for whoever is watching TV at the moment to either not have an iPhone or at least not have it next to them? I often put my phone aside once I get home as my family likes my attention on them rather than who's texting/calling me every moment. At least for a little while after I get home and during dinner. (The rest is my time, LOL)
The Roku remote offers universal voice search too, PLUS a slide-out keyboard. While I don't often use that keyboard I do use it to sign into new services or for search when the remote doesn't seem to understand. What harm would there be in Apple including one too, other than a lost opportunity to sell you another keyboard for yet more money? That slider could hardly add more than a buck or two to the cost if that much while a separate Apple keyboard will set you back how much?
Oh I've definitely considered it, but that's not really what I'm suggesting. I'm suggesting the customer buy a dedicated remote in the form of an iPod Touch, or iPad Mini. Back in the day I bought a few universal remotes in my quest for the ultimate control device that were easily in the hundreds of dollars, and they were still crap. Or even keep your old iPhone as a dedicated controller. Unfortunately, Apple totally missed this opportunity to upsell, by not having an app ready at launch to do exactly this.
While it's no big deal to include a slide out keyboard, it's not really a very Apple solution, and an iOS device will allow them to do so much more. And even if you don't usually keep your iPhone or iPad handy, at least when you're setting up your ?TV it shouldn't be that big of an inconvenience. Most people do not enter their passwords, and log into new services frequently. But for those who do, there's the incentive to upgrade to a dedicated device for that. Once you're committed to the Apple ecosystem, replacing your ?TV with a Roku because they have a cheaper keyboard remote option is not really an option.
That said, my suggestion here is really in lieu of Apple building a dedicated remote touch screen that mirrors the display, which is exactly the kind of TV remote I would expect Apple to build, which would also inflate the cost of the product. And who knows, maybe that's where the iPod Touch is headed, when it's eventually decommissioned. And maybe Apple has a full featured optional touch screen remote waiting in the wings to introduce when the customer complaints reach a fevered pitch. Drive up demand and offer the perfect solution.
Oh, I doubt it. We just have examples of a time when Apple made these questions irrelevant, and so discussion can be had on why they’d decide to stop. I’d love it if they did so again, but it’s no skin off my back, as long as my product purchase cycle is; others are more offended.
That wasn't a time when Apple was so dominate that they can sell new devices to people every year with year-old devices having an amazing resale or trade-in value. I have so many little white square 5W chargers that I could build a 1/5th scale model of The Great Wall of China¡ In fact, the PSU and headphones that came with my iPhone 6S-series are still in the box in which they came, and I only use the larger, 10–12W PSUs that came with iPads around my home, save for a single 5W charger for my Apple Watch.
I have so many little white square 5W chargers that I could build a 1/5th scale model of The Great Wall of China¡
I never seem to have enough chargers. I only want 12w going forward; I don’t want to have to care whether my iPad(s) will be able to charge at such and such location or code my nearby cables to distinguish their power.
Apple always does this sort of thing. They'll release something (like the original iPhone) that misses really important stuff. Then when everyone bitches they release new software to make it better. I think it's a game they play with their customers.
To avoid admitting mistakes and to minimize any impact the "bitchers' had in getting things fixed, the self-appointed Apple PR spokesmen will claim that it was Apple's plan all along to add those missing things.

I am not come mplaining about any of those things. You obviously didn't read the post. While I am at it, I do not think it is unreasonable for Apple to include a charger with a remote that requires it. They include chargers with other devices that require them and warn you only to use their chargers. If I use an Amazon phone charger and somehow the remote, which is 50% of the cost of the Apple TV, gets damaged can you assure me that Apple will replace my remote for free?
It is ridiculous to not include a charger for such an expensive remote. Your statement regarding charging with a car's USB outlet is equally ridiculous. I'd want some assurance that this did not void the warranty. You obviously can't just use any charger since they don't all have such fine voltage controls.
I'd want some assurance that this did not void the warranty.
You think plugging in a USB cable to a system like a PC or car would void the warranty despite that still being the primary way to first sync an iDevice via iTunes and for use with CarPlay? Sure, Siri Remote isn't an iDevice, but why the hell would you think that charging it would voice the warranty, especially when they don't supply you with yet another PSU for charging?
You obviously can't just use any charger since they don't all have such fine voltage controls.
LOL You've really never used a USB 2.0 port in a computer for charging?

I would very much appreciate you not swearing in your replies to me. You free to do what you want but I usually ignore that kind of outburst.
I have a lot of chargers and am quite familiar with the issues involved. You may think that chargers are interchangeable but they are not. Computer USB ports are quite safe for charging. It's a different story when you use other sources. Anyway feel free to charge whatever you want however you want. I am very particular when it comes to charging lithium batteries and feel it is unreasonable for Apple to assume I own a computer with a USB port that would work with the included cable. If the remote needs charging with a specific charger then they should include it. If any old charger can be used they should state that.
Honestly? Do you know ANYBODY who doesn't have at least three USB chargers lying around? I don't.
It be really annoyed if every damn remote came with ANOTHER charger.
You are missing the point. We are talking about a very expensive remote with a lithium battery. You don't use dollar store chargers for lithium batteries. Apple should make it clear what can safely be used. A computer is fine because of the USB specifications. If one doesn't have a computer with an appropriate USB port then what? Can I use any tablet charger from any company? Try getting iPhone service from Apple if your use a cheap lightening cable with a cheap charger.
Honestly? Do you know ANYBODY who doesn't have at least three USB chargers lying around? I don't.
It be really annoyed if every damn remote came with ANOTHER charger.
I bought a 5 pack of cheap Chinese knock-off chargers (right down to the green dot on the bottom), because I lose mine all the time. Usually someone asks to borrow mine, and then both of us forget to get it back to me. But I've also gone off and left mine plugged into a wall. Found one under my passenger seat the other day that had fallen out of my bag, so good thing I had spares ... I keep the good Apple ones at home plugged into the wall outlets near desks, night stands, living room, and kitchen. If I didn't get a new charger with every product, I wouldn't have enough to go around, and carry with me, as there's nothing I despise more than crawling around behind furniture to unplug a charger I need to take on a trip.
So yes, I welcome a new charger every time I get one from Apple. I would much rather have a drawer of chargers I don't need, than to find myself without a charger I do.

Oh, good enough, then. What’d I miss?
Everyone who pays $149–199 for an Apple TV also has a way to charge via USB-A every couple months.
How? Can it be charged with an iPhone or iPad?
