The last phone with a real WOW factor for me was the iPhone 4. Not saying that the 5 and 6 aren't nice looking phones in their own rights, but there's just something about that design of the 4 that still sticks with me. The symmetry of the two glass panels around the aluminum band, the 30 pin connector with speaker grilles on both sides. The last truly black phone as well with chrome logo and writing on the rear. Just a beautiful design all around. Right up there with the aluminum MacBooks and iMacs.
Agreed. One of the classiest things Apple's ever built.

Glass backed phone. Totally unpractical no matter how nice it looks
Maybe, but I had mine for three years case free. Never broke. Then my wife used it for a while. Never broke. Her 5 got stolen recently so she's using it again temporarily. Knock on gorilla glass, still not broken.

The biggest downside to glass (besides fingerprints) is not being able to attach things to it. It needs extra metal structures inside to hold the components in place.

It would be nice to get a deeper black with the metal, that's what the ceramic process used by HTC did:

It's a bit darker than Space Grey:

It can still get marked though like what happened with the slate iPhone 5:

I think the white iPhone 5 looked better than the white iPhone 4:

but the black model came out duller and Space Grey isn't dark enough:

They need to use this coating:

If they apply a surface on top like a hardened lacquer then it would become shiny and possibly slippery and would show up fingerprints more. It's being able to apply whatever process they use in huge quantities reliably too. A shiny black coating like car paint would look like the 3GS, which was nice:
