Jonathan Ive, aka Jonathan Ives aka Ives

The British industrial designer behind the designs of among other products, the original iMac.

    iWalk

A semi-convincing fake of an Apple PDA, as seen on Spymac.

TGB, aka The Gay Blade, aka Mac The Knife

Mac The Knife was a persona originally featured in the defunct MacWeek magazine. Now known as The Gay Blade, he presents often-accurate insider information obscured in cryptic and humorous prose in the Naked Mole Rat Report columns for MacEdition.

    Minimize In Place, aka MIP

Perhaps a precursor to Panther's Expose feature, Minimize in Place allowed users of Mac OS X 10.2 developer builds to minimize windows "in place" instead of to the dock.

    Speed Dump

A 1999 event where due to errata in the PowerPC G4 processor, Apple was forced to drop 50 MHz from the clock speeds of its newly-announced G4 systems.

    Beige

A blanket term referring largely to grey computer cases. Initially, Apple sparked a computer design trend by offering the Apple II in beige plastic. Although 1984 marked the introduction of the lighter-coloured Apple IIc, Apple continued to produce beige systems up to circa 1987, when it fully adopted 'platinum' as a new case colour.

Upon Steve Jobs' return to Apple, a design renaissance brought new materials and colours to Apple's case design. Previous Macintosh systems, such as the original Power Macintosh G3, were subsequently classified as beige, although they followed roughly the same platinum colour scheme that replaced beige in 1987.

    Crappy Carbon Port

With the release of Mac OS X came a flood of hastily-updated programs from Mac OS 9 using the Carbon API. These programs tend to ignore Mac OS X interface design conventions, and either fail to adopt or only provide lip service to new Mac OS X features.

    SU

Software Update. A Control Panel in Mac OS 9 and a Preferences pane in Mac OS X, Software Update allows the user to get free up-to-date versions of system software.

    su

UNIX switch users command. On a system with users root and joeuser, typing "su root" while logged in as joeuser will allow joeuser to operate as root within the context of the current terminal. Usually, this is eschewed in favour of sudo, which in conjunction with another command, e.g. "sudo updatedb", allows joeuser to operate as root solely within the context of the specified command.

    ADC

    1. Apple Developer Connection provides services to Macintosh developers.

    2. Apple Display Connector combines a digital display connector, USB and power in a single package.

    VPC

Virtual PC. Formerly from Connectix, makers of Ram Doubler, the QuickCam and other products, allows users to run PC software under emulation on a Macintosh.
