Silly $ grab. Must think their customers are dumb. I enjoyed Bimmers through the E39 generation. They no longer have the magic. Process has overtaken content.

I've got an E46 M3, and you'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands to get it. Today's Bimmers? No thanks. BMW peeked about 15 years ago, about the time Bangle took over styling. Obviously their profits have gone up since then, but at the expense of building a driver's car. The Ultimate Driving Machine no more.

The $13,000 2018 Chevrolet Spark includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Honda offers AC/AA on their least expensive model, too. And, updates for their newest models with Garmin navigation are free for five years - longer than many people keep vehicles these days.
Why is it a double dip? It’s an option not a free stuff. Did you get XM service for free or subscription? If you don’t get an option when you buy a car, retrofit will cost a lot more. It’s unfair for Apple owners because Android can get screen mirror in new BMWfor free as long as the phone has google cast!
This is so dumb. They should just charge you $49 if you want to change it (from CarPlay to Android or, more likely the opposite) for the 5min it takes to flash a new ROM. Good luck with that, BMW. Tesla updates a ton of stuff for free—clogging the purchase path isn't worth it when you're headed into an electric fight with combustion engines...
What exactly is the subscription for? you have an iPhone, CarPlay is activated. You have an android, android automis activated. As long as you have a head unit with usb or wifi and the facility activated, it works. A one time, at the time of manufacturing activity. BMW is despicable.
Who gave you that head unit for free? BMW happen to just build it into every head unit and charge customers when they want that option. It’s like Windows OS which has all features loaded in the OS and you buy a key to turn on the features. Why is it so hard to understand?

Bangle mangled their styling.
To each his own. I think the recent-ish 328i styling is fantastic.
I have CarPlay in my new Denali but I haven't used it, probably never will. I'm sort of old school. I don't even need a radio or a cup holder. I just drive and keep my attention on the road. I don't even answer phone calls while driving. If I need navigation, I would probably use the factory built-in nav system. One thing I do like is the new speed limit indicator in the driver's side dash display. I suppose it uses GPS to get that data, but the speed limit of some newer streets is not yet included. In my BMW you can turn off the center counsel display if you don't want to be distracted with it. I haven't figured out how, or if, I can do that on the new Denali.

The design of the F30/F31 3-series sedan/wagon introduced in 2012 is not accredited to Chris Bangle. Christopher Weil is the designer responsible for the current look of that (and perhaps other) vehicles in BMW's lineup. But to be honest, I loved the look of my 2011 E90 3-series, the design of which had matured nicely before it was replaced by the F30.

The E65/7-series got the brunt of Bangle's design, while the later E90 was really toned down.
Not sure if mentioning new before, I can simply imagine that Apple asks a one-time fee plays a yearly fee, and BMW is passing on he costs seeing growing adoption rate. Independent of the background, a bad publicity move. What’s next? Subscription on tires, lighting? Oh, actually, when you lead a car you usually have a service package in there somewhere - so in fact you do pay a subscription feee already. Sort of.
