Huawei trying to beat Apple's iPhone shipments to become second-biggest smartphone company...

Apple may lose its second-place spot behind Samsung in the global smartphone market in the future, after Chinese mobile device producer Huawei declared it will attempt to ship 200 million smartphones before the end of 2018.

As of July 18, Huawei has shipped 100 million smartphones, mobile arm chief Richard Yu Chengdong told the South China Morning Post. It is claimed this is the fastest the company has passed the milestone shipments number for a year, with previous instances occurring on December 22 in 2015, October 14 in 2016, and September 12 in 2017.

"As it's only taken just over six months to reach the target this year, we are now aiming for shipments of 200 million units by the end of 2018," claims Yu.

It is noted that the shipment figure is not for one individual smartphone brand, but in fact two. Shipments for both Huawei and Honor, Huawei's budget brand, are used in the calculation. The continuing increase in shipments for Huawei means it is gaining ground on Apple, and if sustained, could outpace the iPhone producer.

According to an IDC report in May, Apple shipped 52.2 million iPhones in the March quarter of 2018, an increase of 3 percent year-on-year, while Samsung shipped 78.2 million units. In the same quarter, Huawei reportedly increased its shipments to 39.3 million units, a 13.8-percent year-on-year increase.

IHS Markit analyst Zaker Li suggests the Huawei and Honor brands are gaining ground in Southeast Asian markets, including India, a region Apple is working hard to capture. Huawei has apparently seen success with both its brands in the country in the second quarter.

Since the second-half of the year is typically when most smartphones are sold, Li believes "It will not be difficult for Huawei to exceed 200 million units of phone shipments, if it has already completed half of that now."

For the full year 2017, IDC data claims Huawei shipped 153.1 million smartphones, while Apple shipped 215.8 million iPhones. Leader Samsung achieved 317.3 million phone shipments across the year. Shipment volumes are in no way an indicator of profit, with Apple continuing to seize the lion's share for many years.

Depends on what they mean by “ship”.

Theyre either planning to sell sell more than Apple, which is easily done by flogging them for less than it cost to make them; or they can ship more than Apple to create the world’s biggest mobile phone landfill.

Androind producers should be scared of more. Apple not much. P20 Pro camera looks very good.

And with larger and larger volume they will face similar challenges as Apple does.

Shipping is not selling....Apple could ship 150 Million iPhones every quarter just to satisfy a pissing match if thats what they wanted to do. That doesn't mean they're gonna sell 150 Million iPhones.

In other news, McDonalds sells more burgers in a year than Morton’s sells steaks.

Yeah, they can stuff the distribution channels like Samsung does and hope carriers can drain it with BOGO deals.

This is just channel stuffing. Apple sells more. And they make more doing it.

    Sad.

So Huawei is also including Honor, their budget brand in these numbers. As in CHEAPO phones. How many of those are being sold? Have they sold far more of those phones then their higher end Huawei phones?

Everyone is always so focused on Apple instead of their own phones.

I'm fine with whatever competition that Android OS device makers want to enter into. The faster that they saturate the market with low ASP devices, the faster the race to the bottom, the faster that they will consolidate the market, and Apple will still have steady sales in the range of 200 to 225 million iPhones a year, at much higher ASP's than all of the others, and a continued growing user base from all of those older iPhones in circulation.

These idiots never learn. Market share without profit is pointless and eventually leads to collapse.

I wish we could get past this constant ranking of Apple against other companies. It doesn’t matter if Apple is second, third, fourth, whatever in sales. It also doesn’t matter if Apple is number one in profits. These statistics imply precisely nothing. They are merely talking points to argue about.

What we as Apple fans, investors, and customers should be interested in is...

    1. Is Apple making products that people like to buy and use? The answer is a resounding YES, regardless of the whining and complaining that goes on here. The truth is that Apple’s products are popular, useful, and built to last.

    2. Are developers supporting the platform? The answer, again, is a resounding YES. Developers are for the most part happy and making good money regardless of what is alleged by the negative element that is always looking for doom and gloom.

Makes you wonder how they earned their money to start the companies, or how they ever managed to make a living in the first place. Obviously none of them know anything at all about running a business.  /s

Clearly some of them don’t, like those that end up on the chopping block and sold for parts.

Quite alot in Europe. Apple in Europe is marginal comparing to Huawei.

Technically that is true - now show me who stocks them without sale. Any idea how to prove that shipping is not demand in this case?
