Is there any way to copy a DVD including the subtitles?
Amorya

here's the deal, ripping on a mac sucks completely, i asked last night for support from DVDXCopy for me to port that app over, so we will see how it goes
well i guess this can be set to rest now...the reason i made a new one was because i wnated people to see a good way to do it and this thread is basically dead
No this thread isn't dead, I'm now waiting for my PBG4 12" SupaDrive. I hope we sort this out by then! I have a few questions:
1. Is it possible to split up a DVD if it's multilayered? By this I mean burn two DVDs and have the movie still play in set-top boxes. Like Lord of the Rings Extended Edition, for example. It was so long you had to switch discs in the middle. Can I do this if I have a multilayered movie like The Game or Ice Age?
2. So people are ripping in 42 or 0Sex and then burning in iDVD right? What about DVD Studio Pro, maybe that can split DVDs?
I've never used any of these apps, I've only ripped two DVDs with DVDExtractor, which I hear is now ported to OSX. I can't wait to start copying movies, my roommate manages Blockbuster.
I copied 3 movies so far (amelie, the others, oceans 11), without any probs.
I did dvd-r (not divx)
For those of you that can't get it to work:
1. REMOVE forty-two from your system COMPLETELY (taht means remove forty-two folder in library/application support folder, ALSO remove forty-two from Library/receipts folder.
I just finished watching the divx version of LOTR-Fellowship that I ripped last nite with Fourty-Two.
Worked excellent, just as it did with shrek (the only two i have done so far). But slow, thats all. Takes about 20 hours to compress to 'DivX (1 CD)' on my iBook.
Running the avi through DivX validator took care of the MP3 sound issues as it should.
If you are trying to back your DVD up you should use the 'DVD' option on the right side of the option list (BAD INTERFACE). The right side options are all quicktime formats ( as the native DVD format is ) and the left side options are Divx formats in avi's.
i've posted that already, at 3ivx.com and afterdawn.com its called "the best way to copy dvd's" or something liek that
OSEx
Sizzle
Toast
and i'm out (i go into slightly more detail at those places, i had a thread here like that but it was closed cuz it was too close to this thread i guess...perhaps i even put it in this thread somewhere)
I just wanted to say that I just burned my first dual layered DVD which I own btw.
I used 42 and a bitrate calculator, and then used disk copy to burn the iso.
The DVD seems fine, even plays on my roommates hitachi dvd player which won't even play burned cds. I do have to say though that it didnt work on another roommates Gateway DVD player, there was picture, but no sound. O well you cant win them all.
A bitrate calculator? Elaborate please, is this seperate software? I'm sorry but I just want to straighten this out so when I finally get my PB I can start copying, I mean backing up, right away.
no, i dont think u can buy or burn dual layered discs...i would assume you would have to change the frequency of the laser so u burn to a different place on the disc...i'm notquiesure how it works

While you can't burn dual layered discs you can buy dual sided discs if you want. They cost more of course (~$8 or so for a RW) and after you copy half of your movie to one side you flip it over and copy the second half on the other side.
Sorry I can't help you out on the software side, I use windows and for that I just use DVDxcopy which automatically rips, splits, and burns my discs for me. On their website (www.dvdxcopy.com) they mention the possibility of mac support in the future
[quote]Q. Is DVD X Copy compatible with Macintosh?
A. DVD X Copy is not compatible with Macintosh systems at this time. Please check back with us in the future.
Well I now have the PowerBook G4 12" with SuperDrive.
I popped in GoldenEye since it's single-layer. I fired up Forty-Two for DVD and it said 24 hours. This was AFTER the actual ripping, and was just for remaining "encoding." WHAT! I said "DVD" and therefore I don't understand why it needs to "encode". DVDExtractor .9 never did that in OS 9, it ripped several images I've yet to burn since they were multi-layered in 40 mins. These were images 3 times the size too.
Screw Forty-Two for the time being.
How long does 0Sex take?
So... I for kicks dragged GoldenEye onto Disk Copy. Apparently it's not protected! It copied into an image just fine. But DVD Player wouldn't recognize it when I mounted it either from compressed or DVD/CD-R master image. VLC played it just fine with "from TS_Folder..." or whatever. But can I burn this image from Disk Copy or will it not work? I don't understand why DVD Player didn't want to see it since it was a valid image from Disk Copy and this DVD was brand new, never been played. I'll keep playing around to see if Disk Copy can work for unlocked DVDs. And I'll try 0Sex.
Forty-Two's 24 DVD ripping is kind of disappointing.
There's another app from macupdate.com called DVD Backup that looks promising for duping DVDs. I'll post my results with all these apps in a bit.
[quote] I have been trying to get ripping dvd's and burning them to work for the past 2-3wks and everwhere i read and tried took FOREVER
i asked multiple places and they just said on how to fit it to one DVD...forty-two...its useless unless ur making a VCD
i finally figured it out and its as simple as can be
1) Rip with OSEx into elemental ac3/m2v
2) Make a DVD image consisting of half the chapters(or as many that fit)
3) Make a DVD image consisting of the remaining chapters
4) Burn them with toast
thats it...WHY couldn't somone have told me this 3wks ago!
...i'm mostly just bitter because it took so long to get to work and how simple it is, but thanks for letting me vent, perhaps some people should see this before it gets locked
Is this what you were talking about, instead of afterdawn.com or 3ivx.com???
I really hope they come out with higher density (7 or 8 like most commercial) DVDs so this will all be simpler. Double-Sided DVDs look cool but they're kinda expensive and you can't write on them.
Ast3r3x I'm testing your instructions now and copying the first part of James Bond, since I only have one DVD-R disc for the next few days, the one that came with my computer. I'll let you know how it does in my Mac, my roommate's PC, and a PS II.
Why do you like to complicate perfectly simple topic? :-)
If u want to copy dual layer DVD, then u have 3 choices.
1. use forty-two (or ffmpegx, or something else) to to encode ripped dvd as u have to make it small enough to fit on ONE LAYER DVD-R, so if there is 150,000 frames IT TAKES TIME. Live with it or:
2. Use discovobulator (same guys who did forty-two) to make duplicate of the DVD, well not exact duplicate as you will loose menus and special features, etc...
It may fit on one DVD (because u are scrapping special, features, different audio tracks, etc.) or it may require 2 DVDs. There is no re-compressing involved, so it is way faster.
Comments
what format do i want it in, DIVX4, .mov, mpeg?
after i rip it with that, is there a way to burn the .vob or m2v and ac3 files on a DVD and have it play?

I got a great results with forty-two.

1. REMOVE forty-two from your system COMPLETELY (taht means remove forty-two folder in library/application support folder, ALSO remove forty-two from Library/receipts folder.
2. Download ver 1.5 from Kai's website :
Download area
3. Install it and PLEASE make sure you click on build application support (or something like that..), otherwise it will not work.
4. RTFM, really ...
Word of caution, it takes about 20h on my 1ghz ti to complete the process.
In forty-two 1.5 you will end up with dvd disc image which u can burn using disc copy.
Works like a charm.
AND PEOPLE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD :-), consider donating, even few bucks.
Good Luck all
i'd rather split it and burn it in less then 2hrs to two DVD's

piwozniak and i-bent-my-wookie thank you. I will post my results with my 12"er when I get it.

why do you want divx though, i want DVD quality without all the time
I want to make exact dupes of DVDs so they can play in set-tops and PS2's, and computers, with no hassle and good quality.
Now the question is: what to do with multilayered DVDs?
edit: do I split the movie into two DVDs? How do I do that?
