Considering how much faster the AW4 is over 3, I cannot imagine buying or recommending the 3 anymore.
    How fast is fast?
If either is fast enough, then it's a meaningless comparison.

My Series 1 can't compare to either the 3 or the 4.  Yet, in daily activities such as timers, messages, phone calls, email notifications, music, etc...  it is still "blink of the eye" quick.

But, where it has fallen down is, with the latest Watch OS5, exercise tracking has become noticeably slower -- it takes a second or so before the display comes on when I raise my wrist.  It's irritating, but not enough for me to replace it.

So, what I'm saying is:  while the series 4 is much improved, the Series 3 likely meets the needs of most people at a far lower price.  But, that said, if I end up replacing my series 1 it will be with a 4 -- because it has features and improvements that I value.

Am I the only one that decided to go for a Xiaomi watch because I wanted more than 18 hours of use per charge at less than a third of the price? Granted, it’s not an Apple product, but I get around a week per 2-hour charge and the sleep tracking is excellent.

I preordered my gold stainless AW4 in September and Best Buy couldn’t get it to me until November 27th. Heck Apple couldn’t do any better. Inventory is still constrained. I was able to find one gold aluminum AW4 November 1st in our area and I’m in a major city. Lol. That report is stupid.
It says shipped not sold....everywhere i go and finding iwatch on persons arms...
The APPLEWATCH has been out for how many years now? It isn’t, and NEVER WAS, called “iWatch,” period.

In theory but (and this is my only complaint) my old 2 and my wife's 3 both will respond immediately to '10 minutes' and the timer starts instantly.  With my shiny new 4 nine times out of ten responds with 'wait ... I'm working on that.' and nothing happens, this can happen five times in a row. As the cook in the house, this is proving to be most annoying, by the time I get really pissed off and shout at the watch I've ruined dinner.

Considering Apple Watch Series 4 went on sale on september 21 - 10 days before the quarter ended - and that it was seriously supply constrained at first the numbers soond pretty good to me. In the current quarter the percentage will be much higher. My money is on north of 50% for sure.
AI, your credibility takes a big hit on this article.

    1) Given that the Apple Watch Series 4 went on sale with just over a week left in an entire quarter - where the other 10.5 weeks were selling Series 3 as the high end - is pretty relevant, don't you think?  All you mention is that Series 4 was introduced last quarter.

    2) Xiaomi devices sell for a fraction - a f*cking fraction - of the Apple watch.  Thanks is also pretty relevant, don't you think?

This article was entirely written as click bait.  I wasn't aware that The Verge had taken over AI...

The AW4 might be much faster, but it still seems to take just as long for an hour to elapse.

Apple is also padding their margins heftily. While that’s good per unit sales, it’s rough over all. It’s gives an inflated sense of value which is also good. But it also feels like a foolish purchase at times. A bit more ram or storage? Take out a second mortgage please. It’s unbelievable in some cases.

As a professional creative in both static and motion art covering digital and print, Apple has a substantial footprint in my home and vehicle. It also has a major footprint in my workplace. However, this year when I’ve submitted budget requests for just two Apple products, I was shot down due to the exorbitant price in comparison to other manufacturer hardware. And it’s something even I was unable to justify.

I like thst the products are priced in accord accord with the card put into crafting them. I am infuriated by the gouging of customers like me who actually need hefty performance from our machines.

And im concerned that other agencies and businesses will be making decisions just like my workplace.

There is s difference between “paying more for better” and “just plain foolish.” At this point, and it pains me to admit it - especially after being s driving force behind Apple s dominance in my workplace, but Apple has taken 2018 as an opportunity to for e people into the “just plain foolish” category wgebn they truly need some real horsepower in their carefully crafted machines.
I feel sorry for your company. At the high-end it’s been shown Apple prices are comparable to alternatives. And yet, it’s also been shown Macs have a lower TCO. So it sounds like your firm is a penny wise, pound foolish.

I can’t imagine any pro firm having an issue paying Apple’s ram prices. DIY budgets perhaps, but in enterprise we simply don’t care.

It's only like 20% faster than the S3.

I believe this estimate. Few people need an Apple Watch, but lots want one. That spells G I F T. And when people are buying for other people, they cut corners.

Regardless: the S3 is still a terrific device. It's not like the S0 where it was barely good enough, it's more your two-year-old iPad.
Nope, I’ve had both the 3 and the 4, and the 4 is not merely 20% faster. Cite your data.

Unlike the 0 and 3 I’ve had, the 4 is the first one to truly have no lag in apps. They are immediately responsive to scrolling. (Even Workouts on a 3 would sit there for a couple moments if you hadn’t used it in a couple days)

I would absolutely recommend the AW3 to anyone who doesn't need the extra functionality of the AW4.   The AW3 was good enough when it was the fastest device, and it's also good enough for a significant number of people even now when it's not the fastest device.  Especially given the discounts available on the AW3.

Not everyone needs the latest and greatest, and if the feature set of the AW4 doesn't offer a given person anything of value over the AW3, then paying the extra for that un-needed functionality is dumb.

I have an AW3 with Cellular.  It's good enough.  It does everything I need, and while I would like to have the newer one, there isn't $500+ additional value in it for me.
Good enough isn’t great. AW3 had plenty of stalling apps and catch-up moments, even when it was brand new. Considering it will only get worse on newer software versions, it’s again a penny wise, pound foolish. The AW4 is that much faster.

Nope. I’ve worn AW since day 1, and it’s always been hindered with poor responsiveness, including the 3. Besides workouts, another example is Home app — if you have a bunch of scenes and devices it takes several seconds before it unfreezes and you can scroll it on the 3. On 4, it’s immediately available for use.

If you’re ipad or desktop did that you’d freak out. Only the AW4 has matured to the point where it’s as responsive as larger devices.

Irrelevant, because the AW is an accessory device, and the device it’s an accessory to requires nightly charging. Thus it takes no additional effort and has no additional opportunity cost to charge both at bed time. You can get two days if you need to track sleep one night, otherwise you can charge while in the shower in the morning after nightly sleep tracking.

The timer app is instanteous. Are you talking about Raise to Siri commands? Here the problem is not the raw speed, but the picky way one must raise it up quickly enough, close enough to mouth, issue command quick enough, use correct commands, etc.

Irrelevant. The AW is just a watch for telling time like the iphone is just a cell phone for talking. It’s about the software, apps, functionality.

I want to get a Apple Watch 4 to replace my Original Apple Watch which is no longer supported. There are a lot of Apple Watch 3 sales going on all over but I really couldn't find anything for the 4. So I'm holding off until there is. I also still think it's dumb that you have to pay more for a Cell version. You pay for the service every month, you shouldn't have to pay more money to get the ability to pay them. I think it's a scam. I think all Apple Watches and iPads should just have cell service capabilities. Use them or not. No Wifi only version but the Wifi only price point.

I couldn't find any benchmarks, that guesstimate is based on videos showing app boot performance.

Great is the enemy of good enough.  And the AW3 is good enough for many purposes.  Not everyone needs great.  If and when your assertion of stalling and catch-ups (mine displays no such behaviors) becomes true for any given person, they can then decide whether or not the the next version has enough value to warrant changing.

Not for me.   Except for the workout app my Series 1 does just fine.

That's not to say I wouldn't love to get a 4 -- but my series 1 is running so well I can't justify replacing it.

It’s not irrelevant if you want to use it 24 hours a day to, say, track sleep, which I realize isn’t important for everyone. But just how does it last “two days”’when the tech specs on the Apple web site state 18 hours between charges. This doesn’t give it enough time to last through the night after a day’s use. Also, I don’t know how long your showers last, but according to Apple, a full charge takes 2 hours.

I wear my AW4 w/LTE all day & all night (for sleep tracking).  When I get up in the morning, clean-up, shower, etc., I put it on the charger for < 1 hour, and it is fully charged when I'm ready to leave for work.
