They're different.  cnet has a surprisingly decent down to earth and detailed article about MiniLED and how it differs from MicroLED

    So:

    MiniLED = LCD backlighting
MicroLED = light-emitting pixels (not an LCD)

Not same. The names happen to sound similar, but very different. Mini-LED is yet another backlight technology that implements many local dimming zones. The screen itself is just a LCD.

micro LED is an emissive screen technology that is capable of producing lighted pixels without a backlight, so it potentially has all the advantages of OLED, but brighter and with no risk of burn in.
Oops, didn’t see your post before I made mine.

A move back to TouchID via on-screen fingerprint sensing would allow Apple to create an iPhone very similar to this

    Why?

Because Touch ID means getting rid of the camera? The entire True Depth camera system?

    Are people really this dumb?

Touch ID (done this way) would be a nice accompaniment to Face ID. It would give people options (either/both), and it could give people extra security in form of 2 factor.

Very interesting possibilities like having both configured and whichever one unlocks first wins.

Maybe we could also get rid of the awful 'double click side button' to make a purchase, and instead require 2 factor auth.

That tl;dr version is only effective when the intended audience understands the terminology.  Based on recent threads discussing the subject matter, generally speaking, that understanding doesn't exist here.  :)  Hence the linked layman's terms article from cnet.

I am leery of going back to Touch based systems because they simply do not work well for as many people. FaceID works very well for me and I would love to see Apple extend it to the Mac.

I work in healthcare and wash my hands before and after patient contact, between contacts, before and after eating, etc. Then we wear gloves frequently. And I have dry skin. Added together, my dry skin on my hands just does not work well with Apple’s Touch ID system. I know of others in healthcare who have the same problem with Touch ID.

Strangely enough, the old AuthenTec app with the Eikon USB fingerprint scanner worked flawlessly and that company was bought out by Apple for the fingerprint technology and patents.

No, you're the one who's dumb.  Unless Apple has figured out, by Fall of 2020, how to bring the FaceID camera behind the screen or shrink it to the point of having no notch, TouchID via on-screen ultrasonic fingerprint sensor is the only way you're going to get notch-less design that early.

A year from now Daniel will be telling us how Android stole this idea from Apple ...  :D
What idea is that?  Insecure face recognition or ill-functioning under screen fingerprint recognition?  Because that’s where we are at present in Androidland.

He was talking about under screen fingerprint recognition. And if your understanding is that it is "ill-functioning" in Androidland, then you are not paying attention. Only Samsung's implementation is ill-functioning. 1st generation of under screen fingerprint recognition was ill-functioning for ALL of the other OEMs as well, but they have all sorted it out fairly quickly in 2nd generation. Huawei/Oppo/Vivo/Xiaomi and few other OEMs as well have properly functioning under screen FPS for almost a year now. Only Samsung is the odd one out in the Androidland, trying to be unique for some strange reason known only to themselves.
